Hell, I can't even get that to work with my PC. I always end up using this old Dual Action Logitech thing I got in 2001. Still works great. Far as I'm concerned, the "Xbox 360 Controller for Windows" is pretty much only useful if you need another Xbox 360 controller for your xbox 360.

I think this forum attracts those people who started early in exposing themselves to better cinema, in a way. Or at least, got a bunch and attracts more through it. Not to be patting ourselves on the back, as I realize that can sound like a pretty self-congratulatory statement. The sort of games we talk about (in addition to the big-budget ones, of course) are those that are slower and more intellectually focused, and we grew out of an adventure game community originally. Those same people are often very interested in movies that play around with formulas and try to push boundaries. At the very least, among people who watch those films and people who play games, I'm sure the overlap from the graphic adventure genre is pretty heavy. For my part, I got my first not-just-a-crappy-summer-job job working at a two-screen art house theater when I was 16, and now 6 years later am a projectionist at a small, one-screen restoration cinema. I got the job at the first place originally because my friend worked there. His dad knew the owner or something. I haven't talked to that guy in about 3 years, but art and classic films have kinda taken over my life. It exposed me to a lot of stuff I otherwise wouldn't have known existed. Seems like 16 is a good age to start getting into stuff like that. I know my girlfriend started a bit earlier (going so far as to dress as Veronica Lake for halloween when she was 13...) but among most people I talk to, 16 is about when you develop a taste for the kinds of films you'll be getting into as an adult. The more 16 year olds I can show good films to, the better I feel about movies in general.

10, I believe. Not positive though.

Seriously? XLBA downloads slow for me, but PSN is absolutely abysmal. Like, for a 30Mb download, go get a cup of coffee.
-
That level killed my disbelief. I believe if you look a few posts up in this thread, you'll actually see me bitching about it. Still an amazing game though, and one of my favorites of the generation.

Got it this afternoon and began to play. Just turned it off. Already almost to where I was after two weeks of play on the GCN. The game just feels right on Wii. It was already a great game. Hell, it better be as I've now bought it twice. Now it's surpassed great to fucking incredible. The controls, 480p, and widescreen definitely help. The only bit I dislike is the waggle-run in cutscenes. The interactive cutscenes are fine when you're just pressing a button to dodge or something like that, but having to swing your arm wildly to outrun a rolling boulder is a bit odd. Especially when you need to hit a button to dodge at the end of the run. I don't know about you, but when I swing the remote as quickly as the game requests, I choke up on it, making button presses just awkward enough to fuck up. I've died twice, and both times were at one of these boulder segments. But yeah, that's one minor complaint. Everyone with a Wii, go for this one. It's cheaper than most Wii games by about $20, and probably one of the Wii games I'm happiest with so far. I think the best thing I can say about it is that I don't regret that I've paid for it twice. Can't wait to finish story mode and check out those Ada Wong missions and the other bonus stuff they've included. In conclusion:

I would say also that you should pick up PixelJunk Monsters if you have even a passing interest in tower defense games. That one is rad as hell. Also, Eden is great. Never tried Racers, but whatever. Doesn't sound like you'd be interested in that one anyway. And if you never got it on Steam, this is your ideal time to pick up Everyday Shooter. That should be enough to keep you busy for at least a little bit. If it isn't, Bionic Commando Rearmed. PSN has a really quality catalogue, compared to the mountains of "meh" you'll get browsing XBLA. Not that I don't love both, but a random pick on PSN is far more likely to be enjoyable than a random pick on XBLA.

I believe it also has a lot to do with Sony using fairly severe quality control methods. Realistically, the proportion of stuff on PSN Store that's actually worth playing is pretty high. And dude, Wipeout HD. For serious.

I'm getting more and more interested in this. I may need to grab it in the rush of post-christmas "I have money for a couple of weeks!"

I believe what was called ghetto was not the motion controller itself, but the fact that you still need to be holding the left half of a sixaxis in your left hand (as in, a poor substitute for the Wii's nunchuck) while holding the motion controller in your right. That is most definitely "ghetto."

Y'know what? To hell with it. If it's a difference of that much money on something I'm going to want to play sooner or later anyway, I'm in. The issue going on with the others made me realize I would actually like to be in on one of these deals.

Well, now that you have a PS3, you can hold out for the director's cut that has integration with the Sony Motion Contoller! ...eew.
-
Hey, no fair! I said that first!

It's just as well. The fighting controls really are shit, as has been alluded to. I bought Darkstalkers a little after launch back in the day. Haven't bothered to even try another. It was so goddamn bad.

Possibly. I have actually never had any problems with the 360 I got back from my first (and only) RROD, and it's been almost/over a year now. I think I may have lucked out and gotten a newer one from MS. Glad to hear you may be sorted. With any luck, if it is about to go, it'll be a week or so after you finish Brutal Legend.

It's $15! For two games! How much lower do you really expect them to make that? Whatever. I guess it's only a day. As long as you're playing by the end of the weekend, it's all good. I hope you actually like them and aren't one of those people who are put off by the story. I find it helps to regard it as intentionally overwrought. If you take it seriously, it's ridiculous and grating. If you take it as a tongue-in-cheek throwback to detective noir (and how the hell can you not with things like "Address Unknown" showing on every TV you walk past) it's brilliant.

I dunno, I actually kind of like the name. There's something irresistibly dumb about it, while at the same time it's so very apt for what the game should be. It may be a hard sell for the crowd that wants to take the game more seriously than it probably should be, and for those who don't already know what it is it could be a puzzle as well. For those reasons, I'd understand if they changed it. All the same, a part of me hopes they keep it.

That's so weird. I wonder why they use different systems for two of their own games? I just started up Fallout 3 on Steam as well, does anyone know if the DLC stuff will work with that version, or am I screwed?

Grand Thumb Auto XXXIV: It's sometimes too early.

I'm in. My supervisor isn't in the office that day, and my girlfriend will be in class. Game on! -
I don't know how American companies do it, but getting from Calgary (About Montana-ish) to Toronto (Buffalo/Detroit?) is only about CAD$400. I have three sisters who all live around that city, so I make the trip semi-frequently. Never really breaks me, financially.

Yeah, I downloaded the DLC for Mass Effect and I bought that through Steam. I can't imagine EA would have a different standard for different games, and they are the same publisher. You need to get your CD key through the game info screens, but it is definitely in there. Should be quite doable.

If there is an issue, allow me to offer some Canadian help, Scratch. I don't want to scoop anyone, but if you legitimately can't get the game to somebody who agreed to be in on the foursome, the extra feeling of helping out a forumer could push me over the edge from "yeah, I'll probably buy that when there's a Steam sale" to "Ok, I'll bite. L4D2 it is." Problem is, my work schedule involves Sunday afternoon shifts, so though I play when I can, I'm rarely able to attend the weekly L4D games. I'm a player, but not really a regular. That's mostly why I didn't speak up in the first place. Also, I want to stress that this remains contingent upon you being left picking up the tab for games that can't in fact be gifted to our 'cross the pond comrades. I hope it's not necessary, but I wanted to offer you a backup so you didn't spend money on nothing. Best of luck in getting this all worked out, gents. Hopefully this post is not needed and I'll be playing you guys after the first Steam sale.

Yeah, both Max Payne games are available on Steam for pretty cheap. I have no idea how it controls on a console, as all my experiences with it have been on various computers over the years (It's one of the games I use to break in new PCs. Come to think of it, I should install it on the [bRAND NEW!] laptop I'm typing this from and give it a go) and it's never played anything other than flawlessly. Seriously. Go to Steam right now. They're $10 each, or $15 for a bundle of both of them. No excuses.

Just keep playing. You'll start dreaming in Noby Noby, never understanding the compulsion to return. Then you realize, my god, you're having fun.

Idle Thumbs 46: First Annual Year

Thank you for your talk of Musi Chub. I thought I was the only one who read it that way, but didn't think it was worth commenting on. It wasn't until I actually clicked the link to the musichub.ign.com thing that I realized that my brain put the space in the wrong spot. Now everyone will suffer the same way I do!
