I though Uncharted 2 was excellent at what it did. It engaged the hell out of me and was a crapton of fun. On those merits, it may deserve a nod. For me though, it was much more of a "popcorn" type experience. When I wasn't playing it, I wasn't thinking about it. When I finished the story, I said to myself "well, that was really enjoyable. Wonder what's next?" and then moved on. Contrast that with Banjo, where I'd be gone for a day or so and be designing new vehicles in my head, getting really psyched up for the chance to realize them in-game. Uncharted had no corollary to that. A great game, no doubt, but the fact that I forgot it so quickly points to a flaw somewhere (in the game or in myself) that prevents me from calling it my goty.

The theater I saw Ponyo at only had the Disney Dub. Though a bit irritating at times, it really wasn't that bad. Liam Neeson is always appreciated.

DEAR DEVELOPERS OF THE WORLD - I NEED THIS
miffy495 replied to ThunderPeel2001's topic in Video Gaming
I think Majora actually has less time travel stuff than Ocarina. While Majora has you bopping back and forth through time, every time you go back the three days everything you've done is erased. If you're looking to actually have an effect on the world, Ocarina lets you do more. That's not to say which is the better game. I personally hold Majora as my second favorite Zelda, right behind Link's Awakening. -
Hell, if you guys are looking for veteran thumbs, I'd be game for a go. Dunno how much I'd have to contribute, but what the hell, why not?

Oh god, I totally just cursed myself. After playing through the game to 100cc completion, Rainbow Road had the power to make me motion sick. All that flashing, the rapidly scrolling colours. Ugh. Awesome day of Mario Karting, but I need to go get some air now. First time a game has ever done that.

World 6 Airship level spoiler: !!!!!

No, although it makes my girlfriend sick and I remember back in the day my mom could never watch me play it. I guess I was just one of the lucky ones. Now, after being spoiled by true 3D, it looks weird and my brain has a harder time accepting it, but I still don't feel bad at all when I'm playing. I also used to play marathon sessions on my Virtual Boy with no adverse effects. My eyes are super-human!

I like the selection here. I'm also using it to remind me of games that I need to play. I missed that Dark Sector (or whatever the hell the Castroid game for XBLA is called) game when it came out due to hard drive limitations, and now am thinking I should go back to it. Also, Groucho is stalking 'blix. Good to know. My personal Goty is not actually of 2009, like brkl and Erkki. Mine would be Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts, which I got in January, so it's 2009 for me. Though I stalled right before the boss fight and have yet to finish it. Platformers do that to me. I have enough Jiggys to fight Gruntilda, but still haven't visited 2 levels. Completionist instincts cause me to get everything before moving on to the next level and unlock the boss fight earlier than they assume I would. I did the same thing with Mario Galaxy, actually. Then, once the boss fight is open, I freeze up and put the game away until I guilt myself into finishing it. That's neither here nor there though. Point is, I think I actually had more fun with Nuts and Bolts than with any of the 2009 releases that I've played. The joy of making a total James Bond car (incredibly streamlined, fast race car, with the ability to turn into a submarine or fly when the need arose) and having the damn thing work cannot be equaled. If we do limit ourselves to 2009, I'm probably going to end up going with Infamous. I beat that game twice. In a week. That shit was addictive as hell. EDIT: Also, in all seriousness Groucho, I would be really curious to see what your 'blix list has on it. If nothing else, for amusing reminders of his rants. (see: threads related to the Mario & Luigi series)

So I'm preparing for a trip in the next week-ish. Long plane ride ahead of me. The purchase of the DSi recently was timed when it was partly in anticipation of this. I thought GTA Chinatown Wars would hold me over on the trip, but I've almost completed it and I don't leave til Thursday. As such, I was in the market for a cheap, but solid DS game to take over after I finished GTA. Spent a bit of time trying to decide between Rhythm Heaven and Henry Hatsworth, but in the end, Hatsworth was $5 cheaper. God. Damn. This game is amazingly fun. Like, incredible. How this is getting only "good" review scores, I have no idea. The levels are long and varied, the controls are tight and responsive, the puzzle is good enough that it's never an inconvenience to go down to the bottom screen to build up some extra energy, the platforming is insanely well done. Everything about this game seems to be exactly what one could hope for from it. I won't go into crazy details right now, as I have a paper to write and have procrastinated enough, but holy shit get this game. It's turning out to be one of those mini-masterpieces that seem to usually only show up in the indie games scene, but stretched out to what is starting to look like Super Mario World size. Only two worlds in right now, but I can't wait to go back to it. Miffy's seal of approval delivered. Buy this and fun times will be had.

Fair enough. Point conceded. Usually when people ask me about what resolution a film is at, I just get frustrated because they want to know a pixel count.
-
That's about right for the fancy new projector my theater uses for digital. Though I will point out (responding to brkl) that the main advantage of 35mm is that there is no resolution. It's just light, pure and simple.

Woo! Arrived yesterday, but I was at the girlfriend's so I didn't get the mail until I got home from work today. I have now beaten the first two worlds. It's pretty damn awesome. The thing that bothered me about NSMBDS still bothers me here (addition of 3D physics to Mario platforming means that the jumping feels way less precise than it did on the SNES) but otherwise I'm entirely happy. Really looking forward to busting this one out with company around now, after I've finished the other 6 worlds of course. One odd thing that I'm surprised no one has pointed out yet: There is no 4:3 mode for this game. My Wii moves back and forth from my computer monitor in the main room (where my other consoles live/multiplayer games get played) to an old CRT TV in my bedroom (used for lazy Virtual Console games in bed when the girl wants to play some old Genesis games). Right now, happens to be hooked into the CRT setup. So I was playing Mario in bed and wondering why it looked so funny when I realized that this was the first time I had played a game letterboxed. I may be the only one here who'd tried playing this game on an older TV, thereby causing this to only be an issue for me, but I still found it weird. New Super Mario Brothers Wii is 16:9, no matter what you're playing it on. All those people who got pissed at me when I worked at HMV because their widescreen movies had "those ugly black bars on the top and bottom" are going to be unhappy with this one.

You're 4 levels away from where I finally gave up. Final Goddamned boss. I spent 2+ hours on nothing but boss fight retries and finally decided to put the game away while I could still say that, overall, I enjoyed it. Let me know if you finish. Godspeed, sir.

Unfortunately,L4T is one of the few times when I will not be able to attend. If anyone is still online at about 4:30 MTN (I think 11:30 GMT?) when I get home from work, I may be up for a run though.

Oh man, any party that fires up "Party All the Time" gets instantly more awesome. X and the Voidoids are great choices, but possibly not in line with what you're looking for. For recent hip-hop-y stuff, I like to throw on Aceyalone. His most recent album "Aceyalone and the Lonely Ones" I think I talked about in the Dancing Thumb thread, but to reiterate, it's kickass hip-hop with Motown backup singers and music. One of my favorite finds of the year, and great party music. He also has an earlier hip-hop-reggae-fusion album called "Lightning Strikes" which is useful if your crowd would rather have reggae than motown.

Yeah, I'm pretty much done trying to play with bots after that early bit where you need to get the case of soda for the dude and run through a horde rush back to the hideout. Bots are ENTIRELY useless in that situation, as they won't move forward unless you are and you can't move forward unless someone is clearing a path for you. Ugh.

Just had a very entertaining run of the sugar mill one with Wrestle, James, and Ysbreker. Thanks for letting me jump in halfway through chapter 3, guys. Good game, but holy hell is it hard. When I joined, we were on Advanced. After dying 6 or so times, we dropped it down to Normal. Still couldn't make it on the first go. Lots of death there. I threw out the comment as a joke that they balanced the game using people who play L4D1 for several hours a day, but after all that I'm not sure if it's really a joke. Sadistic difficulty level at times. Still, having a group of thumbs to weather it with made it great, so cheers.

Idle Thumbs 50: "Farewell, Video Games" or "The Shitty Wizard"

I plan to make Miffy's Objective Truth's a weekly thing, much like Icebox's Tech Corner. And yeah, I did in fact say that Diddy's Kong Quest was the best game of the 90s. I also went on at length about how even though I know it's not that great, I still occasionally balance my Virtual Boy on my face (stand is broken) and fire it up to this day.

Figured as we already have a Phoenix Wright thread going, I shouldn't start a new one. Looks like I'll have a chance to get the other two games for pretty cheap not too long from now.

Who said Henry the Horse has to be an actual horse? With that in mind, I had a very difficult choice this afternoon between L4D2, GTA, and Sgt. Pepper. I played L4D2 until I realized I needed to leave for work. Then I learned that thanks to my girlfriend being around tonight and me not needing to walk the dog before leaving, I could play an hour of GTA. No Sgt. Pepper for me. I intend to play the shit out of "Fixing a Hole" when I get home tonight though.
-
To put it simply, I bought everything when it came out LAST year and I still haven't played as much as I'd like of many of those games. I'm going to try to go a bit easier this time around.

Just had a run through some of the Carnival level with Cigol, Ysbreker, and Patters. Lot of fun, but holy shit this game is way harder than the first. I died, like, a lot. Tried the third chapter three times before I had to leave. Just firing off a quick post here before I leave for work. Look forward to more thumb games in the future. EDIT: Also, just logged into Steam on my laptop to finish a download while I'm walking my dog, and 7 notifications popped up for friends playing L4D2. Seems successful.
