The theater I work at is having a "French New Wave at 50" thing right now, showing 50th anniversary screenings of things like The 400 Blows and Elevator to the Gallows, so I've been watching a bunch of French cinema lately as well. Good times. It's also the theater's 75th birthday, being one of the oldest building in Calgary (stop laughing, Europeans.) so we're wrangling some prints from 1935 to show in conjunction with that. Lots of weird stuff came out that year. So far we're looking at things like Mutiny on the Bounty, Captain Blood, and Bride of Frankenstein. We do semi-regular 16mm screenings, so we have the really old equipment necessary to do it and it's the kind of thing other movie houses couldn't get away with, so its pretty exciting. It would also be Elvis' 75th birthday this year, so we might do a marathon of his movies as well. It's a weird thing to ask, but I'll put it to you guys anyway: What movies from 1935 would motivate you to get into a theater today? In addition, what Elvis movie would you most like to have a chance to see on the big screen?

We got hit by a chinook this week (blast of unseasonably warm air coming from the Rocky Mountains. Makes Calgary winters bearable.) so it's actually about 6 above 0 today. This winter has been weirdly warm, with about -20 being the norm. I don't bother closing my jacket in this kind of weather. Haven't had a single day below -30 yet, which is kind of freaking me out. I'm bracing myself for when the other shoe drops now. Needless to say, I would gladly be in a beautiful coastal city such as San Francisco during the winter.

Wave Race 64 and Blue Storm are awesome. If you have a Wii, download 64. I'm a little curious about how the gameboy version would even work. Is it one of those top-down 2D racing games that I never end up able to control?

I was so close to saying something along the lines of "I don't know if he'd really care what you call it" and post a picture. Congratulations on sharing a brain with me.

Truly, this is the maddest of catz.

I think I actually have one now. Stop choosing "Easy" first. Usually, when a game has no difficulty selection or picks a difficulty for you (based on tutorial performance or whatever) I have no trouble on Medium or Hard, but if I start a game and I see "New Campaign: Easy, Medium, or Hard?" I will just choose Easy without thinking. I'm going to stop this this year. Not that I'll never play on Easy, but I won't drop it down unless and until I've tried Medium for a while and don't think I can cut it. Because from experience, I can probably cut it.

Just started chapter 8, which means that I just finished the amazing sequence Holy shit that came out of nowhere and really grabbed me. I know I'm probably in the minority on this, but I think that (regardless of execution) Altair and his timeline are just more interesting than Ezio. At least at this point, with how much I've seen of Ezio's story. This meant that I was completely floored by this sequence and really hope there is more like it. It also made me really glad that I played through the PSP game, as what you see there links directly into the story from that. So now I'm in Venice. Going to hop back into the game again. Shit it's good.

Fixed for new international travel policies.

You really don't need to play the other three at all. The first one was really good at what it did, the second drove it into the ground, and then the third was interesting for its use of the balance board but not much beyond that. I wouldn't worry about it.

Grand Thumbs Autos XLVI: Just when you thought it was over

I'll be in class on Monday, but if there's also going to be a game on Tuesday, what I said earlier applies... -

Done. I will be playing this soon.

I will likely be there, and therefor not rectangular. -
Idle Forza 0x00: Is this going to be a thing that is?

That was fantastic. Thanks all for a great introduction to the game. I rolled. Twice. This demonstrates that Forza 3 has rolling. I saved a replay of the first one, so if I can be arsed, I'll go into whatever replay editing mode they have and maybe put up a video of Toblix and JonCole slamming my face into a wall and causing me to land on my hood. Dropped from 3rd to last on that flip. I look forward to joining in on weekly games if they happen. Wednesdays work alright for me, so hopefully I'll be able to attend with a 50% or higher success rate. -

I will probably not be rectangular. I'm out of class at 12:15, have to be at work by 4:30. That leaves me with a good 2 hours before I need to leave after gametime starts. -
Yeah, those ads pissed me off to no end, and that's not even considering that what they're advertising is a bullshit gamestop-exclusive preorder bonus. On the plus side, you only get the toilet humour gun if you buy the game at gamestop, so just avoid that place and your experience will be fine. I don't know how this happened, but the adblocker on my desktop PC stops gametrailers ads from popping up every time, but the exact same thing on my laptop doesn't stop the stupid ads. If I try to block it on my laptop, the whole video disappears. Anyone have a tip to get rid of this shit? I hate Gamestop already, I don't need their relentless stupid advertising to reinforce it. Might it be something to do with my desktop being on Vista and my laptop on Windows 7?

Sorry, I guess? I've actually never had it, which I guess speaks to a junk food-deprived childhood. I just found it weird that in a game where they're constantly harping on how stupid the "buy more crap" culture is, to the point of it being overbearing, if you "BWAAAH" (your primary attack, having a rabbid scream and blast your enemies with a sound wave) a vending machine, it will spit out generic green-labeled cola and pouches of Capri Sun. Really though, it's the only thing that I don't love about this game, so don't think too much on it.

This is made by Q?, right? I'm confused, because I remember that DSiWare was getting a game like this and it was either made by Q? or QGames. Is this by the pixeljunk guys or the Meteos guys? Either way, I'm interested. How much is this going for, anyway?

The only minigame that bothered me much was the top-down shooter you had to play whenever you made Bowser grow to building-fighting size. Drove me crazy. Irishjohn, why are you holding out? It's an awesome game. Unless you're really strapped for the $40 it would cost you (that's the Canadian price, I don't know about elsewhere) I don't see a reason to deprive yourself of the fun...

Sure. I need to leave for work at 4, which is 11 your time, but anytime before then is fine by me. -
It seems to me like Demon's Souls difficulty is actually causing people to look past a lot of other irritating gameplay conventions. Gamespot's goty for it smacks more of retaliation against the casual gaming onslaught that's been creeping up than an actual reflection of the game's quality in comparison to other releases this year. Not that the game is not good, but there was so much that came out this year that is worthy of goty that Demon's Souls does not seem to measure up to from what I have seen. I may just be really cynical, but in my mind Gamespot is pandering to "teh hardcores" for hits rather than actually picking the best game of the year. That said, I haven't played it. I may never, honestly. It seems like the type of game I wouldn't enjoy that much. I won't rule out that it is incredible at what it does, but especially from a huge site like Gamespot, shouldn't a goty be a game that the majority of gamers would actually enjoy? This isn't a personal goty, this represents your entire staff. It should be a game that everyone can get into.

I people try to do it tomorrow, I'd be in. My copy arrived in the mail today, so it would probably be the first time I put the disc in the tray, but as long as noone minds playing with a complete rookie, I'm game. -
Last week was at a wedding. This week, with the girl until about ten minutes ago. I'd be able to play for a half hour before having to leave for work, so I'm not going to bother. Next week, in!

I read Rebel Sell back when it came out and really liked it. I was still in High School then and just starting to get into sociology and cultural studies kinds of books. I may need to look into this.
