I plan to attend this week. It's been a while since I've been available. I'm going to try and get in an hour or so of ODST before hand. When I see people start to log on, I'll save as quick as I can.
-
Now french it up a bit and you'll get there.

Canadiens. Canada has 5 teams, dammit. And if Phoenix would give us back the Winnipeg Jets and Colorado would give us back the Quebec Nordiques, we'd have 7. Signed; - A huge Toronto Maple Leafs fan. (Who will still cheer for the Habs unless they're playing Toronto)

Funny, I seemed to remember more positive responses to this game. Maybe I'm bringing up the wrong thread? Regardless, I just got my copy in the mail today and have spent about an hour with it. Initial thoughts: Yeah, it's totally derivative, but it's also quite fun. It also helps that it obviously knows and plays up where it comes from. When the king hands you a wooden sword at the beginning and actually says "It's dangerous to go alone. Take this." you're definitely under no illusion about what the game is going to be like. I now have the boomerang and the bow and had just started the Forest Temple (second temple in the game after Grass) when I saved and quit for the night. The only thing that's really stood out as a negative so far is the occasional sketchiness of the controls. It just feels a little bit off, but it's really hard to say why. Like when I turn and press the sword button the attack is just a bit delayed and feels weird. Still, it's just a part of the game. Not necessarily broken, but something which I noticed and will need to adjust to. Oh well. I intend to put in more quality time with it, so we'll see what happens. I really like that you can create your own character. Haven't spent any time with that feature yet, but I am very interested in doing so. I'll post back with any other thoughts as I play.

I've gotten back to my replay of all the earlier Sam and Max games after the Penal Zone got me up for more. Just finished Night of the Raving Dead. Really enjoying the earlier stuff now. It's been long enough that I've forgotten how to do everything, so it feels really fresh. I think I'm actually enjoying the games more the second time through. I didn't know the next episode was out tomorrow. Totally psyched and ready to get into the game now. Booyah.

360 - miffy495 Will start playing whenever Amazon gets my copy to me.

In that case, I would be up for another game on Monday afternoon depending on how things work out.

I think the beta ends on Saturday? The whole reason I was playing last night was that it would be my only chance before it was over...
-
That slam dunk was bloody amazing. I love Skate, but never played the second. I guess it's probably pretty cheap now?

Thanks for a wonderful set of games, Patters and Jon. I'm definitely a lot more interested in all things Halo after that set of matches. n0wak, was something up with your connection? Regardless, nice to see you again, if only for a bit.

Cool. I'll check online around 5:15 and see if anyone's around.

I also still have and quite like your book. Exciting news, Rodi!

The price on ODST just dropped, so I picked it up today. I realize the Reach beta is only open until Saturday, and I'll actually only be able to get in any game time for the rest of the week tomorrow after work, but any Thumbs up for a game tomorrow? I don't get in until around 5 or 5:30 Mountain time (running day errands for work, not working the usual night shift), and I know the majority of the online crew are in Europe, but if anyone is good for a game starting around or a little after midnight GMT and going for a couple of hours, I'd enjoy giving the game a try with them...

I believe I'll finally be back next week. Exciting!

Am I allowed to say I hate ebooks because trying to read off a screen for long periods of time gives me a migrane? When working on my thesis, most of my sources were also pdfs. I had to print the fuckers because otherwise it was too much for me.

Sorry 'bout the horrible title there, but it makes sense, so hear me out. Given the current situation with a sort-of light gun renaissance on the Wii, I figured the games deserved their own thread where we could compare, contrast, recommend, etc. I'm talking about Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, Ghost Squad, Link's Crossbow Training, the upcoming House of the Dead 2 & 3 pack, and anything coming down the pipe I may be forgetting. I've always had a soft spot for light gun games. Maybe because it's gaming at it's most refined/simple. Maybe because the first time I ever tried a game was when as a 4 year old my best friend had to show me his big brother's NES so I could try this "Duck Hunt" thing out. At any rate, this new bounty of Wii light gun gaming has me overjoyed and I can't think of a much better place to try to discuss the games. Starting us off: I just picked up Sega AM2's Ghost Squad between classes today and finished my first run through the Arcade mode about 10 minutes ago. Great fun, this. All the cheesy voice over you'd expect from such a game. "Wilco. We're going to rescue the President now." made me giggle with joy for a bit. Gameplay is solid, no problems aiming or any issues at all with control. I'm playing with the Wii Zapper (hell, it was $20 and I love the genre. Why not?) which from reviews was made out to be a bit clunky, but I really like it. No more clunky than Area 51 or Time Crisis 2 seemed back in the arcades I used to play them in, anyways. On a technical front, it's damned impressive that Ghost Squad's calibration is advanced enough that you don't even need a reticle on screen. They give you the option to turn it off and, providing you've used the calibration tool in the options menu beforehand, it's smooth as all hell and incredibly playable. Major props to AM2 on that one. The graphics are what you'd expect from a Wii port of a 2004 arcade game. Read: nothing special. Gets the job done well enough though, and there's nothing stand-out bad about the visuals. Lastly, it's really damned short. Like, 20 minutes for the arcade mode short. Still, given the huge amount of unlockables, multiple branching paths in each mission, and what seems like it will be a perfect co-op experience, I can't say it'll be ignored anytime soon. If you're a fan of light gun games (if not, why are you still reading?) I'd go for it. Especially as it's budget priced at $30. Little things are more forgivable when the game is cheap. I also have Link's Crossbow Training, as it came with the Zapper. There's a lot of good and enough bad to warrant discussing in that one, but it's almost 4 in the morning now so I should probably not get ranting about it yet.

It just seems to me that, for the last decade or so, the only Lucas games that have been worth playing have been developed out of house. I guess I just feel that they'd be better off working as producers now and licensing out their properties to developers that would do right by them. Aside from Republic Commando (good) and Force Unleashed (ok-ish) the last 10 years have not been kind to Lucasarts. To put it another way, it seems like asking Lucas to move their development in-house is like asking for a continuation of RTX: Red Rock or Lucidity. I bought Lucidity. I think that may have been one of the most ill advised purchases I made last year.
-
Yeah, because Tales of Monkey Island and KotOR have done nothing but hurt the standing of those properties.
-
Sorta, except that every sentence is copied and pasted from earlier in the thread. That, or the spambot secretly wants to woo Patters.
-
Ahahaha! Spam has never been more perfectly timed.

I think that's my standard reaction to memes by this point...

Yeah, I was even worse. I bought Puzzle Agent for myself, and a copy of Sam and Max Season 1 to gift to a coworker who'd seen me playing Devil's Playhouse and expressed interest. I am now a pusher.
-
What the fuck? Can your boss do that? Are you going to at least be off in time to write the test?
-
Ahaha. I do find that weird about a lot of future-oriented media. Anytime some group of people seem happy, there's always something sinister behind it. Science Fiction seems like it wants to make us suspicious of anyone happy, which is great at creating conflict for your story, but seems weird to me when I reflect on it.
