  1. The claim was indeed that Spector guaranteed tears. However, this is still second hand from the GWJ guys.
  2. Having been at the keynote, it wasn't there. I believe it was during the round-table that the GWJ guys were talking about. I don't know if there's a transcription of that anywhere. Also, in the PAX live show, that was me in the room saying that Dance Central was actually a kinect experience worth playing. Takin' it to the airwaves!
  3. Movie/TV recommendations

In almost exactly the same manner as we decided to see the Expendables, my girlfriend proposed seeing Machete on Monday afternoon. Holy shit that movie is fantastic. Everyone needs to see it. The both of us have huge hard-ons for Danny Trejo, and seeing him star in such a bat-shit over-the-top movie was fantastic. It was better than Planet Terror, if that helps anyone. Given how much I loved Planet Terror, that was a ridiculous fucking treat. At one point, I was doubled over with astonishment and glee for about 10 minutes. It was so crazy and wonderfully violent I couldn't do anything but laugh. Most fun I've had in a movie theater since the sold-out preview screening of Grindhouse I went to years ago. Goddamn it was excellent.
  4. Happy Birthday!

Happy birthday, fuck you, etc etc.
  5. I played the demo back when it first came out. I don't remember much about it, honestly, except feeling that Freelancer was better. Sell me on this one, man.
  6. Formula Thumb

That sim damage race was great. In that Patters WENT FUCKING BACKWARDS RIGHT FROM THE START! I'm so glad the game took some pity on me and let me go forwards again after I rolled backward down that hill. I crawled over to the pit, got halfway through my second lap with my repaired car, and then THE FUCKER SMASHED INTO ME AGAIN. I did get laps 6 through 9 without any major collisions though, so that was nice. It was a lot of fun, and the replay has been saved, so we'll look to that again later. Also: We need more thumbs in on this!
  7. Grand Thumb Auto: Shakespeare's Revenge?

That was pretty awesome, Shakespear. Question: How many of us have the game on PC as well? Would anyone else be interested in trying again (perhaps next Tuesday, though I don't have my schedule yet) on PC soon? I know Patters keeps suggesting it, and I have the option, so it may be worth a go. Also, having the game record some of our shit would be rad.
  8. Starcraft II

I hope your call with That Mighty Masher Met goes well.
  9. Video games

Yeah, everyone gets a lull. I'm kind of in the same boat as spindrift and feeling like I grew up more than the target audience did. As a result, while I'll still play most of the big "must-play" games each year, I feel a lot of the time like I'm just going through the motions. I try to find the ones that stand out because they do something narratively bold or stylistcally totally different. The exception I make to this is Nintendo. I'm still a total Nintendo fanboy, no matter what. I'm about 2 hours in to Other M right now, about halfway through Mario Galaxy 2, and my most anticipated games for the rest of the year are Donkey Kong Country Returns and Kirby's Epic Yarn. For whatever reason, any of the marquee Nintendo franchises just bring out feelings of total joy in me, so I don't miss them. Lately I've found myself playing games not because I really want to play something, but to make my backlog smaller. If anything, I'd take that as a sign that I'm sort of checking out of the scene. Games that I thought I'd really be excited for like Crackdown 2 and Dead Rising 2 (both of the original games were among my top 3 in the years that they came out) I'm ignoring almost totally. That said, I really want to get back to Mafia 2 at the moment, so maybe I just need the right game. Maybe you do too. One thing that I'm wondering about: We're about 5 years in to the current console cycle, yes? In the past, this is when the new consoles would be coming out, or ramping up to do so. Along with this came leaps in either graphics or AI that made games exciting again. We're not getting that right now. Instead, developers are working more efficiently with what we have and providing incremental upgrades. While there's nothing inherently wrong with that, it does strike me that maybe the fact that systems are improving gradually rather than with a big leap is starting to wear on some of us and cause this feeling. While this applies less to the PC, when the majority of games are multi-platform the PC version will as a result get held back as well. Gaming stagnation, perhaps?
  10. Earth Defence Force sequel

Yeah, it seems like every time this game comes up it turns into you and I drooling over how fucking great it is while most other people stand around confused.
  11. Idle Thumbs PAX Panel Live Stream?

Edited? Boo. There was nothing that needed to be removed from that. Actually, it started off with just the original 3, Gaynor and Vanaman didn't join until after the first break.
  12. Earth Defence Force sequel

    YESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYES YES! :clap::clap:
  13. Grand Thumb Auto: Shakespeare's Revenge?

It's been a while since there was a session, but I'd certainly be down for one. If it starts at the time we used to use all the time, I'd only be able to stay for an hour, but might I propose a game starting at 6pm GMT (1pm Mountain/3pm EST/noon PST)? If people are interested in a game but can't do that, I'd still be around at the normal time anyway, but I'd have to run off to work early. Still, long story short, I'm in for a game. I'll see whomever shows up tomorrow!
  14. Idle Thumbs PAX meetup '10

'Sup thumbs? So, I don't know anything about Seattle or the surrounding area, but I will be at PAX and am interested in meeting a few thumbs for a pint. People seem to be assuming that something like this will be happening, but I don't believe any official plans have been made. Anyone want to try making some? As I understand it, my hotel is a couple of blocks from the expo site, so I don't really plan to leave that area much during the convention. With the proper motivation though, I may be able to find a way. I put it to you guys, as it's only two days away at this point: Who's going and what's happening?
  15. Duke Nukem Forever Canned [and then not]

Irishjohn, from what I've gathered they've actually picked up exactly where the 3DR team left off and are finishing the game, so there are still things in there that were made in 1997, as well as lots of brand new stuff. I have to admit, I'm curious to see what happens, though I'm certainly not in the day one perch crowd.
  16. Mafia II

Well, for jazz, one of the two songs that would play while you're driving in Mafia is now the background music when you go clothes shopping. Otherwise, there's a bunch more jazz in there. Music is a good'n, so lay your mind to rest on that. The cars do feel much more powerful, but we're also talking 20+ years later, and for ther period they still feel appropriate. Can't really speak to the characters yet, but I'm enjoying the dialog at least.
  17. I, like seemingly everyone here, have Bioshock 2 on PC, not 360 or PS3. Sorry Steve. Don't feel bad though. I finished and really enjoyed Bioshock 2. When the DLC comes to Steam/GFWL (I don't even care which!) I'll buy it and play it. I promise.
  18. Mafia II

That's not entirely fair. From what I have played, the game IS good. It just doesn't deliver on everything that people wanted it to. Still worth a play though.
  19. Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse

I did indeed finish it Wednesday night, but was in the car and internetless for 16 hours yesterday (driving from Calgary to Seattle is looooong) so I couldn't say anything. After all of this, The Tomb of Sammun Mak is still my favorite, but this last episode was certainly a cut above most others. Overall, this season is, in my opinion, the best thing that Telltale has done by far. I'm not sure what else I can say, really. Most of what I said on Tuesday holds, so just look at that for a quick evaluation. So good though. People need to play this. 2 quick things: 1. At the Telltale panel today, I thought for a bit that they were announcing Puzzle Agent episode 2 and was so happy, but then it was just a trailer for the iPhone version of episode 1. Boo. 2. When , that coworker who insists that she watches the playing of Sam and Max actually cried. It really got to her. Well done, everyone involved with that.
  20. Life

    Congrats, Murdoc!
  21. Idle Thumbs PAX meetup '10

I will be sleeping 4 floors above that meet-up, so I will be there. (Also, that was me in the tweed jacket who asked you and Sean about that at the Telltale panel. Thanks for the heads up.)
  22. Mafia II

Hahaha. Yeah, I tried to get him to You can't do it. Oh well. Yeah, it could be frustrating, but I found it really added to the tension. Is it worth sacrificing those 12 shots from my tommy gun to go into the next firefight as prepared as I can be? Shit! As I said, it screwed me a couple of times, as the "fire 5 rounds, hit 'r' first chance you get" reflex has been really trained into me as well, but I came around and found it to be a really cool decision that I wish a lot more games would ape.
  23. Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse

Played the first act and a bit of the finale. Jake Rodkin as director? Like, not even a co-director? And on the finale? Fucking congratulations, man. Am I right in assuming that the giant box of "Oops, Diabetes!" brand cereal is a progression of the "Oops, All Sidequests!" brand? I think that had me laughing harder than anything else had in a while. To whomever said that this was the funniest one yet, you may be right. It is also, however, the most referential one yet. Between using bits of Peepers' dialogue from the first season and all the talk about Maim-trons, Abe, and Sybil, not to mention callbacks and even USE of things from Hit the Road, it really does seem like in order to get the most out of the jokes this time around you'd need to know what the hell happened before. Not necessarily a con, but when the rest of the season has been so good about not requiring prior knowledge of Sam and Max, it feels like a pity. That said, I'm enjoying the game immensely and look forward to completing it, probably tonight.
  24. Rock Band 3

I'm stoked that they put some Warren Zevon in there, as he's one of my favorite artists. Still, "Werewolves of London" is not the best choice. I can understand that it'll be a nice hand-holding song for the keyboard, but dang I wish they'd put something else in.
  25. Mafia II

If it helps, I've completed the first 3 chapters and am really enjoying it. After playing Mafia (the first) less than a month ago, this feels like a true evolution of it. The same good parts about the first game, but polished to an unbelievable shine and given a much less frustrating combat system. I only wish they'd held over some of the harshness of the police from the first game. I seem to be able to get away with WAY more crap than I did before, and so feel less inclined to role-play it. Also, though it screwed me a few times, the fact that any unused ammo in a gun that didn't have ammo loaded one round at a time (ie: shotgun) got dropped on the ground when you dropped a clip to reload was really cool. I miss that in Mafia 2, with the game going over to the standard "your overall ammo count remains the same, but now your magazine is magically full" mechanic from most games. Oh well.
