  1. Making Music. Tunes by Idle Thumbsters

No, makes sense to me. The biggest thing for me is keeping up a rhythm between my index and middle fingers when things move across strings, so the second half of that would be good. Thanks!
  2. Making Music. Tunes by Idle Thumbsters

Dear Thumb musicians: I have played guitar on and off since I was about 10 (this means a little over 10 years total, as there was a long 8-ish year gap of not playing in university/gap years). I love doing so, and am reasonably skilled at it. Not great, but not bad. I like to mess around and I know my way around things. A while back, I bought a bass as it seemed close enough that skills I have would translate and I love the sound. I started to play it, realized that (despite the similar look and identical fretboards) the mechanics of actually playing the instruments are very different, and put it aside as a novelty to goof around with now and then rather than "a thing I play". Last month, another teacher on my grade team voluntold me to play my guitar along with the school's choir for our spring concert. It was not something I was super comfortable doing, but it went fine and the kids loved it so whatever. This meant that my guitars lived behind my desk in my classroom for a month while we practiced and performed. During that time, I decided that I actually want to get decent with this bass that I have in my bedroom and have started playing a lot more of it. Turns out I totally love it and want to get much better. Now the guitars are home again, but I'm still playing a tonne of bass. Why I come to you today is this: thanks to all my guitar, I have zero difficulty picking out complex bass lines with a heavy pick. Said bass lines sound so much better when they are fingered however, and my right hand's fingers just don't have the strength or rhythm to keep up. It drives me crazy. I'm not an idiot and I realize that the solution is to just do it a lot until I'm better at it, so I'm not looking for shortcuts, but direction. Are there any Thumb bassists out there who could recommend drills and/or warmups that they use to get that strength? Particularly in my middle finger, as it just gives up on me so quickly when I try to do anything fast. Any tips would be much appreciated.
  3. I Had A Random Thought...

I cut out TV a long time (~6 years) ago, but am still a sports fan. Particularly during the NHL playoffs, I frequent bars to grab a pint, some cheap wings, and watch a sports game that I can't watch at home. Feels justified to me.
  4. The Big FPS Playthrough MISSION COMPLETE

I have tried to play DX like 4 times and have never made it past the stealth training section. It's terrible.
  5. New Forums! Post feedback, notes, etc here

I'm now going to post this out of curiosity to see what mine is after 10 years here... EDIT: Jesus.
  6. Just enough things are chugging on me that I've decided it's probably time. Most notably The Witcher and Just Cause (though JC3 apparently ran bad for most people regardless of GPU). It's not something I NEED to do right away, but it'll have been 4 years since my last upgrade come January and that's about the time I'm looking to step up.
  7. I'm still running a 770, so will likely be jumping to a 1070 this year. Gotta save for a while though. Stupid student loans...
  8. What's for Breakfast?

A hangover steak on toast. Mmm...
  9. New people: Read this, say hi.

Game development would make sense, there are already a few devlog threads in there. We also have a separate "Plug your shit" thread (yes, that is its title) that is meant to be a concentrated place where members talk about things that they are working on and share what they're proud of. Those would probably be the places to go. Best of luck!
  10. Recently completed video games

Did you play it on Vita? I liked it a lot there and wonder how it compares. I'm definitely curious about GR2, but the touch stuff actually felt really right for the game on Vita, so I'm a bit worried about the sequel ditching to the PS4 for a more standard controller.
  11. Uncharted (4 and The Nathan Drake Collection)

So I can't afford $80 for a game right now (Canadian exchange rate hurts). I still really want to be on that Uncharted train, so I'm replaying 1, 2, and 3 via the Nathan Drake Collection, which was on sale for cheap a couple of months ago. I was always pretty into these games, so I'm not really one to talk in terms of criticism. There's more shooting than I remember and it's not quite as magical this time around, but I'm still really enjoying myself. Beat 1 on the weekend, halfway through 2 now. I like the remasters. Main reason I'm posting here? Amusing ragdoll! This happened tonight (thanks, share button!): Look how happy that man is that I got a headshot!
  12. Meow.

    Cat pose, you say?
  13. Hitman: Steve Gaynor Edition

This is a perfect thing. I never want to leave this page.
  14. Meow.

Any time someone is drinking something fizzy, June needs to be nearby to investigate. She is always on bubble watch.
  15. Meow.

I combined Miifoto and a picture of Juniper being confused by a carbonated drink. This is what resulted.
  16. Miitomo

    Miifoto is pretty great.

Warioware expires in July, and Zelda Picross in October, so there's time to get them if people hold out and comment on each others' things. I'm hoping to build a big enough friends list that I don't have to think about it. At 6 now, with 4 more thumbs that I found through "friend of a friend" awaiting approval. I've had a couple of people asking about my name. To be clear, the reason that I'm "Mr. W." instead of "Pete" or "Miffy495" is that I had to change my Nintendo account stuff when I realized that there is a non-zero chance that I will eventually streetpass with my students and that I should probably switch to my teacher name. My last name is too long for their character limit, so initial it is.
  18. Miitomo

Added a bunch of Thumbs via friend of friend things. Pretty much only playing this to get enough platinum coins to get Warioware and Zelda Picross. Without friend input, you can get 10 coin/day. With friends liking and hearting things and making enough posts that you can view 10 of them, 35 coins. Given that each of those two games is 1,000 coins, this could take a while. I hope people maintain interest long enough to get coins all together. A month/game if everyone is involved. I wish there was a way to substitute some of those gold coins as well, it would probably get me to buy more stuff digitally if I could put my digital purchase coins towards these.
  19. Miitomo

That's weird, I definitely have you on twitter, Mington, but you're not showing up for me to add you. At any rate, I'm @miffy495, and my QR code is:
  20. Life

Coming home tonight I had my first ever big boy accident! A guy hit the crosswalk button on 8th street, so I stopped for him. The Acura behind me didn't. I'm fine, blew off steam by running 5k when I got home. If I can still do that on a Wednesday night at like 8:30 in March, I must be ok. Car is mostly ok. All the vital car-bits are unscathed and he managed to miss my lights so I'm still legal. Big difference is that my back door is now concave where it was once convex and the hinge to open and close it is all kinds of fucked up. Thank god for a rear-mounted spare tire, as that actually took the brunt of the impact. Tire's now a write-off, but I salute it and it died with valour. Called insurance, gonna get the damage assessed tomorrow after work. First time in my life I've had to make a claim. It's a fun adventure! On the plus side, you can't really get more "not at fault" than stopping for a pedestrian in a crosswalk with the lights flashing.
  21. Nintendo 3DS

Yeah, they're going right for my wallet with those. Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, Earthbound, Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country 2 (the best DKC), and Link To The Past, ALL on VC in their first three rounds of release. Fuck. I know I've bought these games too many times already (except Earthbound, which I've only had the opportunity to purchase once in my life). I know they're more expensive on 3DS than they've been on any other VC platform. I KNOW these things. I don't know if I can hold off despite knowing this.
  22. Nintendo 3DS

Nah. It's a great system. You do you.
  23. "Cars sucks." - A Pixar Thread

Gum on, it was obviously acci-dental.
  24. Life

Man, congrats, SAM! Really happy for you!
  25. Movie/TV recommendations

I saw Hail, Ceasar yesterday as well. I actually really liked the film, but felt like anything that had to do with the main plot was wasting my time. I just wanted to be in the movie's world, and felt like that's what the movie wanted too. The whole kidnapping thing just felt like someone had kept saying "Yeah, but what's the PLOT?" while they were making the film and they grudgingly threw that in to appease them. They were the weakest part of the movie by far. The slower Coen movies have always taken a few goes for me. I felt really "meh" about Burn After Reading the first time I saw it, and didn't start to love it until a friend convinced me to give it a second viewing. I wonder how Ceasar will hold up to a second go.
