  1. Movies - International versions

I do, I call it my own opinion. All I am essentially saying is, as long as it's the ARTIST'S decision, it's fine with me.
  2. I never really cared for the acting in B5 and the special effects to me always felt a little on the cheap side...
  3. Movies - International versions

Ok that is not the "american" version, but the international official release. the "international" version you are referring to is the rereleased director's cut. the "french" version is 3 min longer as I said earlier. The short version was the official release.
  4. yes well, it's been a while now and I guess I wouldn't like the show as much now as I did back then. just the fact that everyone is heralding BG as such a new approach to SciFi-spacesoap-thingies is bothering me, since Space was so original and fresh when it came out. now it does seem kind of limited in scope. a thing that I really like about BG is the fact that they work with so many different and diverse storylines. I especially liked the whole bit about the vice-presidential elections. If they are able to incorporat this more into the basic setup it could become even better than it already is. Also I really like the whole scylon infiltration stuff about which there was too little recently. Alas I am now back to Maastricht and can't get the episodes via bittorrent anymore due to University restrictions. On a totally different note: I heard on TWIT (www.twit.tv) that those torrents were actually endorsed by the network and are legal(Battlestar Galactica that is)? Anybody heard about this as well?

Well... I was talking about "pseudomorality" as in what I like to call "american hypocrisy", where sexual content is thought to be morally injustifiable but extreme levels of violence still get a PG-13 rating... in general though, I guess any artist has the obligation to make some moral judgements for himself when creating something. I just really hate OTHER people imposing their "moral" standards on art and mostly missing the point. Commercial compromise to me is a two bladed edge because I believe that on a certain level really great art appeals (touches) all people. So reaching out for a bigger audience, when done well, isn't always such a bad thing in my opinion. Of course I am not talking about REAL commercialization. But even in movies when you have the choice of being really krass and cutting edge, putting people off OR trying to appeal to the wider audience by toning stuff down and making it a LITTLE bit more accessible isn't ALWAYS such a bad thing...
  6. Seen any good movies lately?

Just saw two "scary" movies last night. White Noise (starring Michael Keaton and Deborah Kara Unger): This movie was in serious need for SOME KIND OF STORY. There is disturbingly little going on and it doesn't add up to anything much... also, Keaton is quite disturbing as the lead, somehow he always freaks me out. Hide and Seek (starring Robert Deniro, Haley Joel OsmondDakota Fanning, Elizabeth Shue and Famke Jansen): Nice movie but nothing THAT special... I don't really have much to say about this one. The mood is great and Fanning is doing a freakishly good job that puts a LOT of big hollywood actors to shame for dramatic effect. It actually worries me how good she has become. Deniro sadly to me, really isn't giving it his all and I wonder what it's going to take for him to really take the gloves off once more.

as far as Eyes Wide Shut is concerned, I thought it was a brilliant movie and I don't really care about the fact that we weren't shown all those varying genitalia, however I always hate creative vision being compromised for commercial, or even worse, moral reasons... but still I really loved the movie and especially the orgy-sequence was just really really great. again, not because of the context, but because it was really beautifully shot and cut. to me a real Kubrick masterpiece. AI obviously was shite, even though jude law gave quite a memorable performance, i thought. but spielberg really can't do kubrick ;P totally different style and just not harsh and uncompromising enough...
  8. Movies - International versions

didn't we have a thread about the different versions of Leon? well... the "french" version referred to here is a rerelease. the movie was originally released worldwide in more or less the same version as the "us" one you are referring to Knar. A little later it was rereased in France (and only in France at that) with the so-called directors cut that your "french" version is referring to. If I remember correctly the three extra minute in the french version is a scene where Mathilda talks about how old she is. Anyway, with DVD all those limitations are lifted and anybody can see the movie the way it was supposed to be shown. Even though the directors cut is a lot better, that is NOT how the movie was originally shown and probably dates back to a studio decision to make it more of an action movie with less of a relation between Leon and Mathilda.
  9. I am weak

I was replying to the thing about drugstores selling "drugs" in NL...
  10. I am weak

naw first of all, you need another license for that second totally different clientele, since smokin' da reefer is not a respected pasttime in NL...
  11. Excellent player feedback

wow... that's funny! a brit quoting Eminem? hahaha I just imagined the accent...
  12. I just noticed this on Gametrailers.com. Apparently Square-Enix has released a teaser for a game called "the World of Mana" which is set to be a follow up to the SNES classic as I understand it. This is going to be released for PS2 and DS! WOW, imagine playing that sweet nextgen "Secret of Mana" in Multiplayer with your best mates on a DS! I am officially excited! [linkage] Addendum: As it turns out this is brandnew info! hehehe, I am giddy with hope for salvation! Secret of Mana dude!
  13. OMFG there is going to be a new "Mana" game!

Yeah, I don't know about that. I mean I loved Secret of Mana AND I used to love Final Fantasy. I guess Secret of Mana had more immediacy because it's one perspective ALL the way. It's hard to say what could have happened had Square pursued the Secret of Mana line instead of Final Fantasy. I guess part of the charm of Secret of Mana to me is the fact that Square didn't trample all over my fond childhoodmemories with loud and annoying sequels full of FMVs... And yes it was kind of tedious to tell your mates to go to the right side of the screen, but then you usually didn't have to tell them after the first half hour of play because it got kinda obvious. I actually played through Secret of Mana two or three times just for the experience of playing it with friends.
  14. Just finished the book in a 12 hour crunch. Sadly to me it really shows that it's leading up to the greate finale, but there is tons of goodness in there. I still really admire the way Rowling manages to suck you into this world and this book has some really interesting points as you get to explore a bit about the background of Lord Voldemort. I don't really expect anyone here to read these as I guess it's not cool and all but I REALLY liked it. Also I read it as a pdf (I ordered an original copy but it's at my parents place) and I really have to say that I actually found it really comfortable! Maybe there is a market for ebooks because of lazybones like me. No squinting and holding the book... though I still like to buy books same as with CDs...
  15. Harry Potter and the Halfblood Prince...

well in that case I will have to check out some of the more recent discworld novels, so far I only read colour of magic and thought it was rubbish. sorry, but that's just the truth. But I shall try again. I think it's stupid to compare rowling and pratchett as they work in completely different areas. In one area Rowling is definitely superior, massmarket appeal, there is a reason for her making more money per novel than anybody else. pratchett I bet would be amongst the first to agree...but don't let me keep you from bickering...
  16. Seen any good movies lately?

I just finished watching Casshern. After 4 attempts... good god, this movie SUCKS! Unbearable bullshit... utter b-movie crap. If there is any merrit to it, it's the fact that it is so ridiculous! But then I don't think it was intended as a satire, non? What a waste of time... and the effects are incredibly mediocre...ah, I won't waste any more time on this... Sin City I thought was nice, but not THAT special. Some of the scenes could have used some more takes or possibly more effort. Love Mickey Rourke's bit. My other big problem with the movie is the fact that there is no story... just seems odd... but I guess it's a REAL conversion... Unleashed (Danny the Dog) I thought was a really nice attempt at making a good martial arts movie and it works on a lot of levels and only completely fails in the last stretch for me, where the time appears to run out and the movie comes to a rather hasty conclusion. well IMO Morgan Freeman and Jet Lee are always worth watching, non?
