I just beat Assassin's Creed III Liberation, it was quite refreshing to play a side story not involving Desmond, Ezio or the others... It tackles the issues of slavery and class-ism in pretty successful way. The most interesting part is the fact that you have three personas, the assassin, the slave and the lady, each have their own advantages and disadvantages, they give the game a feel of a secret agent game than an "assassin" game. What really sucks is that while I have more Vita games to play, my memory card is on it's way and it's a pain to delete this game and I've gotten all the collectibles I'd bother with. There is a trading mini-game to make money, but it's not really worth the time, it's chance based and you only make good money on routes that are too risky. I really hope we get to see more of Aveline, she's pretty badass.
  2. Retro/Grade

I got a while ago as a PS+ game and yeah I loved the concept of playing a game "backwards", but since I have no sense of rhythm, I had to play it on an easier setting.

But that's the problem, if revoking a female character of power for a single second is wrong and considered "regressive cr*p", that sounds regressive by itself. How many stories empower a hero by dissempowering them first? How many stories disempower to show humanity or emotions? Is she asking for a "Space Mary-ine" Sue or what?

I actually did rewatch it and it seems the basic idea is "if you disempower a woman, even if it's a single time, in the benefit of HIS story arc". which means: -Kurtis has his own story arc in Tomb Raider, the Angel of Darkness, she saved Lara's bacon in the end, turning into a damsel in distress. This definition is ludicrous, just because a female character got help a single time for a few minutes, she's all of the sudden a disempowered damsel in distress? Then I can't think of a single character independent of their sex that hasn't been reduced to a damsel in distress at least once. By the short preview it looks like she'll talk about Elaine Marley as a positive role model, sure, she managed to escape in MK I and saved Guybrush in MK II, but she was totally a damsel in distress in MK III, MK IV and Tales of Monkey Island. Like she said in the video, she's disempowered in favor of the males story arc... Come to think of it, considering Guybrush mess up Elaine's plan and defeated LeChuck himself, that made Elaine disempowered in favor of Guybrush too. See what I'm getting too? It's too vague of a description, or maybe too ample to exact.

Hum, is it me or do these definitions seems to contradict each other? The video was barely interesting enough to watch once, let alone twice. I remember when Wonder Woman was turned into a pig by Circe and Batman's goal was to cure and rescue her, I guess she's a damsel in distress too. I'm pretty sure she still counted Zelda as a Damsel in Distress when she spent most of the game as Shiek. Argh, I no longer know if I wasn't paying attention or if she was inconsistent with her definitions of the damsel in distress.

That's the thing, it's not crowd sourced truth, it's crowd sourced information that hasn't been verified. If she had taken a minimal of time she would have received the information I got from Marion in just one click. I just hope she looks less uncomfortable in the next video, and deathly curious to know if she'll mention Phantis as a counter example of damsels in distress, it probably was the first game were the girl rescues the man.

How is she still a "Damsel in Distress" when she suddenly has superpowers and tries to kill you? Sure, she's still evil and you'll want her to return to normal, but she still has bloody magical powers in this crazy universe. She has the power to turn the protagonist into a giant robot... I just looked at a wiki and guess what... she's a martial arts instructor and she's even playable in a few Double Dragon games... I'm not asking encyclopedic knowledge of every game ever, but could she at least GOOGLE a name of someone before calling her a damsel in distress? That's all. The thing is, I don't feel like she's discussing the trope as listing examples... That someone else gave to her.
  8. Feminist Frequency

Okaaay.... I haven't seen any of her videos before and I was worried when feminist gamers complained that she had no background in gaming and then I heard that she was asking all the KS people to do the homework for her and.... I think I believe it. I don't think she know that much about what's she's talking about, she's just listing games with damsels in distress. She mentions that Nintendo practically invented the damsel in distress, but did she bother to mention Samus Aran? Nope.... She says that Kystal from Star Fox adventures was just cheesecake, but does she mention that she actual become part of the team in Star Fox Assault? NOPE! She speaks with UTTER DISGUST about Double Dragon Neon, because "Now you get to see the girls panties in HD!" and she obviously knew nothing about the game since it's well, meant to be bloody ridiculous and not taken seriously. It takes stereotypes from the type and exaggerates them to extremes. I guess the rumors are right, she might know a lot about feminism, but she doesn't know about games... Oh, and she totally forgot about Peach being a playable character is Super Mario RPG.
  9. Assassin's Creed: Mohawk

Oooh, it would be awesome if Aveline was a pirate in the Vita version of AC IV, she kinda dresses like a pirate anyway.
  10. Internet Comics

I can't describe how hilarious I find this specific comic... It's absurdly brilliant!
  11. PS Vita

Hmm, I think the price reduction is official in Europe, I went to the game store to sell some games and get PS Battle Royale, but I noticed the had the Vita at the same price as online AND they had the ACIII bundle... The problem is... It's a voucher code and it takes up the whole 4G memory card, I already ordered the bigger one I found cheap online and I've only been messing with it... The "Welcome Park" is a cute way to introduce people new to these mechanics and man, the silly tilt game's bouncing marbles looked gorgeous, I can't wait to try something else. In a way it feels like it's trying to be 3DS badly, but subtly enough? I was going to try ACIII, but I used a voucher for the AR games which take up more memory than they should, so I'll play them a little, delete them and then ACIII.

Speaking of unfairly maligned, I forgot to mention I played was is to many the "worst game of 2012", AMY. I don't if they fixed things with a patch, but I had fun... Cheesy fun, but fun non the less. The game is closer to ICO than survival horror since the main gameplay is about getting Amy safely to the next area and it's mostly puzzles working together... Frankly she's more useful than Yorda. The kid has power which are used is more of puzzle-y way than combat-wise, use the silence power so that enemies can't hear you break glass, use "force push" to make a car alarm go off so that the zombies go investigate and leave a clear path for you. It was interesting to see the "zombification mechanic", the hero will slowly get infected if she gets away from Amy, but if she gets infected enough, she can walk among the zombies. There is a certain level that is a "insta-death stealth" mission, but only you view it as a puzzle instead of a stealth thing and use the "zombification", it was more fun than I expected. Yes, it's goofy and buggy, but it's all in my favor... You are supposed to defeat the final boss with a very tense timed puzzle, but I used a certain mechanic against the boss and it was hilariously easy. Oh, the one thing that did annoy me were the pathetic jump scares, the game doesn't make a monster do a jump scare, they make a pipe burst or a light fritz out and the girls act all freaked out. It's kinda a shame, since this was obviously meant to be episodic and it's obvious Amy would get new powers in the sequel.

Yeah, it's pretty normal to have a thread be "derailed" for a page or two if an interesting enough topic has been brought up.

So, since Duke Nuken Forever sold a lot even though everybody hated it, it should be considered a blockbuster? I actually beat a game today, a game I thought I never would, Dark Mist, a very early PSN game that's basically a bullet hell in a Zelda dungeon. I could never beat it when it originally came out, but back then I didn't play or even know about bullet hell games, so I sucked at this terribly. You can roll under the bullets, but soon the game gives you small areas where you can easily roll to your death, you can also shake the remote which not only gets rid of the dark mist that names this game, it destroys bullets, but it's kinda slow. You even have a bomb that hurts enemies and destroys every bullet on screen. What makes this game challenging is that you can't save or level select, but it does unlock something if you beat the game. The final boss was a real challenge for me until I finally got the patterns down, it was still a close call.
  15. PS Vita

Well, I should be ordering my Vita next week, I'm glad I did some more last minute research, because I found a 32G Memory Card for 70€, which definitely beats the 50€ 16G deal that comes with a 15€ game. I'm probably going to need it since I've been downloading all PSV compatible content I have and it's ridiculous... I've been downloading them non-stop for over 12 hours! I guess a Vita is justified after all! XD It's strange to see that Vita has "unofficially" had a price reduction, because most online retailed have it at the reduced 200€ price, but stores still sell it for full price.

Frankly, I don't even know what AAA means now anymore, it's seems like an empty buzzword like "casual" or "hardcore". I guess a "AAA" game means "we can charge 60 bucks for it. Why? Because it's AAA? Why? Because it's 60$! It HAS to be AAA!"
  17. Brütal Legend on PC!

So.... The Secret of Monkey Island is that Brutal Legend is just a dream Hoagie had when passed out and shocked by 3000 volts!?!
  18. Brütal Legend on PC!

I think that was a line from Bernard saying he could do that, but I do think he mentioned a friend called Eddie when looking at the horse teeth?
  19. Recently completed video games

Oh, right... It seems most triple AAA companies are too afraid to make anything "not a shooter", I can't remember the last "horror" game I played from a big company that wasn't a shooting gallery with jump scares.

You mean the nickel & diming in full priced games?
  21. I have everyone carry a stick or dynamite, blow up the closest one and have that character pick up the shovel so you don't have to return for dynamite after each puzzle.
  22. Brütal Legend on PC!

Doesn't that still make it about Heavy Metal? But more about it's "philosophy and lore" as such? Hmm, seeing that this is practically Heavy Metal Heaven (or should that be Hell?) how do we know that Eddie didn't die in the intro? And no, that not a spoiler, it's in the intro, dammit! Your stage comment reminds me how few "stage VS. stage" battles are in the game, there are only two! The rest are most defending against new units to get introduced to them. Then again... a time traveling roadie? And the first boss is a tentacle thing? Wow, Hoagie got ripped!
  23. Brütal Legend on PC!

Just wait for the final race, it's dreadful! D: I just noticed something about the game I didn't before, even though it was staring at my face the whole time. The game is supposed to about Heavy Metal and while Eddie can play and the Deuce has Heavy Metal music.... When the create the stage and all... there is no actual music, unless we count the background song as watch is being played "as a concert". It's just so bizarre to have a game about music when only the roadie can play. Well, I guess the healers can play, which kinda makes things more confusing since the game establishes that this world had forgotten what Heavy Metal was... Still, it's strange to tour with an empty stage.
  24. PS Vita

That's the main reason I'm buying it soon too, well that and it would be nice to have for my Easter Holiday trip. I'm pretty sure they at least hoped some people would say "Well, I might as well buy a Vita since I have so many Vita games." What was the original Vita price? I can't remember... I can get the bare bones version for 200€ or bundles for about 40€ more. I checked the forums to see if anybody mentioned the price and noticed that I said that I expected some other company to make cheaper version of them, I guess I was wrong. Maybe it's still too soon or maybe their aren't that many Vitas out there for it to be profitable yet? Anyway, I think 200€ for the bare version (with a 4G memory card) seems good and I highly doubt it will drop further anytime soon. EDIT: I just noticed that the 200€ is for the webstore only. It seems I can order it online and it pick at the store anyway? EDIT'S EDIT: I can't find the bundle with ACIII except.. used with warranty? I guess that mean the warranty is from the store and not Sony, right? Does anybody think it's a good idea?
