Hmm, strange, it didn't show up in my search. That's odd, I guess I'll just consider this topic closed then?

I completed FarCry 3... it's much more "terribadly" cheesy than Blood Dragon even could be and the fact that in this case they were trying to be serious is hilarious... The story is just... Ugh. The padding was pretty obvious when a guy ask for a certain item that takes way too many missions to acquire and the rest is just oh so silly... Vaas was the best part of the game's story. The story missions were the worst part, but everything else was glorious, the chaos of traversing a jungle where any moment you can be taken down by a tiger, the fact that a wild animal can either ruin or make anything easier or harder. At the beginning it's pretty stressful and fun to try to take down bears with a tiny bow only to take them down with heavy weapons near the end. And taking down an enemy's base through stealth, sniper rifle or just using the wildlife is just great fun. I really don't know what to think of this game... it's like a burger made of the stuff they scrape off the burger grill at the end of the day, but the side dish is a deliciously decadent plate of duck fat fires poutine with bacon bits.

Frankly, it's hard to tell if in-game content is important to backers or not, they seem to be always be in the same tier as the "get your name in the credits", "digital collector's editions" and similar offers. Has there been any Kickstarter that had a tier that only offered the "golden gun and silver top hat" treatment and nothing else? The ones I've checked always seem to offer something extra. I never meant to imply that a KS would not succeed if the didn't offer the "golden gun and and silver top hat", I just meant they needed rewards for those higher pledge tiers. They have to fill the tiers between "soundtrack and artbook" and "I'll mow your lawn" tiers somehow. (I wasn't kidding about the mowing the lawn one, even though it's not a game KS.)

Well, I think I finally get your point, Twig. I can't speak for the companies so I can't say if they are doing it on purpose to be exploitative or not, but I'll say this, most Kickstarters would fail if they didn't have these higher pledge levels. Like I said, I can't speak for the KS creator's, maybe they are sincerely trying to make the fans feel special for their support of maybe they are exploiting the fact that the fans want to feel special or want a better version of the game. But just checking most of the Kickstarters that aren't from big people like Keiji Inafune or Tim Schafer, they would never reach the goal if these goals didn't exist.

OK, that's a starting point. But what about when it's just something that might affect gameplay in a very minor way, like a +0.5 XP gain ring that gives a minimal advantage or items that give temporary advantage, like the ring I describe in Unepic, that quickly became useless?

Come to think of it, I think there was recently a book pre-order where you got an exclusive mini-novella that filled in the blanks in Scott Sigler's The Rookie for side story character. I don't know if it's available now to non pre-order people, but it still counts I think. Just to be on the same page, do you think all exclusive content is "wrong" or does it have to be a specific type? If not, when does it become "iffy"? Does the mere fact that some people are paying extra to know of a product's progress evil or is it basic decency? Do art books or soundtracks count? Do betas count? I'm no wordsmith, but the fact that nothing I say seems to make sense to you makes me wamt to know at least this.

No, I meant the "Next thing you'll tell me you'll want to be in the credits when you only pledge one dollar" was not to be taken seriously, the book one was just poor worded.

The main difference is those are "evil AAA" companies who are locking vital content behind a pay wall and a smaller company that is locking minor unimportant content for a FUNDRAISER. If the kickstarter doesn't reach it's goal the game will never exist in a first place. I think Ubisoft had an actual full chapter in one of the AC games as a pre-order bonus, but it's Ubisoft... And every KS I've seen just give you the "golden gun and silver top hat" treatment. Heck, I'd even be OK with an KS-exclusive level if it had KS exclusive content, like... a level where the guy who pay $1000 is a boss and they guys who payed 200 are mini-bosses and the walls had the names of all the backer and a song praising you for making the game possible played while you played the level and gave you a shirt that said "I backed the game and all I got was this lousy T-shirt" as a reward. If you didn't back the project, such content should mean nothing to you. If I sound agitated it's because the last few KS conversations I had was pretty much people throwing a tantrum because they didn't get the "golden gun and silver top hat" treatment. I've grown tired of it and it's become a tender subject. All I'll say is, this is a small company fundraiser, not EA, they just want to make a game, not buy another yatch and that until I'm proven wrong, the worst case scenario is that you'll miss out in the "golden gun and silver top hat" treatment.

So you point out the part that was clearly not to be taken seriously and ignore the part that was... Do you have any idea how many "decoder ring clubs" are there? How many "locked doors" there are? You do realize that this forum itself has a backer only section, right? And that most KS have exclusive forums too were you get to give feedback and see special promos and trailers of the game. I just don't see the problem... So you're missing out on content because you missed out on a special deal? And that's the thing it's a special deal, a promotion, a limited edition. Not to mention that you're exaggerating and acting like the companies are evil and blocking VITAL content, it's always a stupid gun, weapon, skin or accessory, stop acting like they actually are willing to block a whole level because you didn't. You've heard or variant exclusive covers for comics, right? They make the people who bought feel special, but it doesn't change much. That's what they are doing. You guys are whining because some people payed extra to get a +0.05 in McGuffiness that will be useless in the next level. I got UnEpic in an indie bundle deal and it came with an exclusive magic ring.... that made the beginning a bit easy but was quickly replaced. Unless you actually point out a game that actually blocks out an actual level... a VITAL part of content, not some lame mini challenge that doesn't affect the game nor some free DLC that non-KS will have to pay for, I simply don't see your point. So yeah, people who pay extra get a +5 in tapir taming and a dumb suit, why is that so terrible? You're acting like they are going to out the final boss and ending and held it hostage behind a pay wall.
-
I can't help to notice that you all disagree with the book angle, but ignored the limited edition angle... Kickstarter did not invent the exclusive content you'll never get to see because you didn't get on the bandwagon on time. Sure, some games eventually release this content as DLC... others do not. Also imagine it from the point of the person who bought the Limited Edition, this person probably had to keep close attention to know about the offer and pay extra to get it. How would you feel if you worked hard or payed extra to get a special deal only to have people demand the same deal for less money and effort? So now nobody gets to feel special because it's unfair? Next you'll be telling me that people who pledge one dollar deserve to be in the credits as much as those who payed 50$. Are you also against indie bundles now? Did you know that many game offer EXCLUSIVE versions of their games with some indie bundles, with minor to major changes in the game? Is it also disgusting that people get a special reward for participating in a payed beta or alpha build? IT'S THE SAME THING!

It's here, I only started it when I saw people complained Deponia's puzzles made no sense, when it's really like Monkey Island in a wasteland. I wanted to make sure if anybody who didn't get puzzles was a toon expert or not.
-
So since it's unfair for people who can't afford it, it shouldn't exist? That is just silly... Have you ever gone to a convention and bought a comic directly from the creator? Did you know you could pay extra to get an EXCLUSIVE signed comic with a small doodle of your choosing. But hey.... some people can't afford to go a con or pay for the special version, so I guess I don't to have my comic signed because of reasons... Seriously, you guys sound ridiculously entitled. It's about as meaningful as getting a limited edition, heck, it's EXACTLY what you are getting. It's what limited editions are ALL about. You seriously can't say that a limited edition should not exist because it's unfair to people who can't afford it, that's just ludicrous. You might as well say that they shouldn't have any expensive pledges at all because people can't afford it. I can't afford the plushie pledge level and I'm not complaining.

True, but at the same time, you could still beat Maniac Mansion as long at least one character was left live I believe? And Maniac Mansion was so much "kinder" than any Sierra game, each character had two paths, so if you messed up one character's ending, you always had the other.

Who know, but in the Giana Sister's KS they only gave exclusive skins, one that was simply a Kickstarter backer shirt and people we FURIOUS for not getting them. Frankly, I don't see why it's such a bad thing... It's like if a fan payed extra and went out of his way to get a book signed, but the less hardcore fan suddenly thinks his book should be signed too... at no additional cost. I don't care if it's an extra chapter exclusive for backers, what I'm hearing is "I'm not that big of a fan and don't care as much, but I want the same benefits!" If you want the secret decoder ring, join the club, it's simple as that.

Remember that toon logic thread in adventure games I started quite a while ago? I think Zeus' brilliant performance with the game is kinda proving my point. Zeus never played the game before, but was very familiar with "toon logic" so the game was pretty straight forward for him. And you don't get any more "toon logic" than with Day of the Tentacle.

Ok, the last two hunting trials were AMAZING! FOUR jaguars with a bow was intense and the undying bear was terrifying! They practically program it so that it sneaks up behind you!
-
But it also has an exclusive "transformation", a.k.a. power. And I don't see the big deal with having these incentives... It's the equivalent of having pre-order exclusives in a digital game or special edition content. But true... it's disgusting... imagine giving people an incentive for people to pledge and make them feel special or that it's actually worth pledging instead of just waiting for the game, HOW AWFUL! These people cared more about the product than I did and are getting special treatment... THE INDIGNATION! I deserve to be treated as well as the hardcore fan even though I'm going to buy the game on sale or when it's on the Humble Bundle! I'M ENTITLED TO IT!
-
Yeah, I'm not that far in the game, but I'm almost upset when I have to stop "fooling around" and play a mission because I can no longer spend skill points until I play more missions.
-
I'm pretty sure the game has a golden Beck with an exclusive transformation, because that's what I pledged for.
-
I think I recently unlocked the animal repellent, but there is only one bow with a few attachments for now... Unless you unlock one by completing side missions or finding collectibles? I just unlocked a sniper rifle with explosive rounds, which doesn't sound stealthy, but useful non the less?

Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I almost bought Knights of Pen and Paper when it was on sale on Steam, now I'm happy I didn't. -
The game was free for PSN+ users, so I gave it a go... After being the only person who LOATHED Blood Dragon and after feeling dissatisfied with almost every AAA game I've played lately, I thought this would be a game I'd play for a while just so I could say I gave it a fair chance. I'm glad the game just threw me into a wild after a brief tutorial, and while I don't remember anything more dangerous than a Zebra in Far Cry 2, the wildlife in 3 sure makes the game a whole lot interesting... I was taking out the guards in an outpost with my sniper rifle only to have a nearby tiger take everybody out... Man, those tigers are amazing, in a way, the wildlife makes this a better horror game that most AAA games and it's also a better stealth game than Assassin's Creed, which is weird since it copied the "climb tower to get map" mechanic and they are both Ubisoft games. I did my first rare animal hunt today... the golden tiger, and it was the most amazing thing ever, trying to keep him in sights and yet not close enough to get eaten alive by him.. Of course, the place was also filled with normal tigers. Is the bow supposed to be for stealth masters? Because it's range sucks and I always end up using a silencer with my sniper rifle. I also like that so far getting the loot is no longer as annoying and in 2, at least so far it isn't. I sure hope there aren't any loot chest that can only be accessed by glider... I don't know how I got so many "perfect stealth" outpost takeovers... OK, two of them were thanks to tigers, but when it's just you and you pull it off perfectly? It feels awesome! :3
