  1. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I quit Kaiju-A-Go-Go, it had so much promise, but it has one fatal flaw, it's now really balances well. It's more or less where you have a secret island where you build a base to train you giant monster and send it to destroy cities and take over the world. You gain more abilities to deal with the military forces you encounter, but where it really messes up is with the cities themselves, they just bigger and bigger. Sure there are some attacks that let you destroy smaller buildings quicker, but the only way to conquer a city is to lower it's morale, which lowers slower the bigger the city is, it goes down a little faster it you kill civilians, but... there really isn't a way to deal with them quickly. I had attacks to deal with humans, but they weren't worth using with their slow cooldown and effectiveness. You can retreat if you want to recover, but somehow the city rebuilds within days making it ridiculous. I quit when I realized I was powerful enough to not bother with the enemies and all I could do was walk all over a giant city slowly... section by section. On the other side, they military can find your island and attack it and not only are powerless to do anything. They really didn't think through this part. When I built walls I found myself TRAPPED inside incapable of attacking the enemy. If I didn't like kaiju movies so much, I would have quit sooner, it was hard for me to admit I wasn't enjoying it until it crashed mid-conquest. Right now, I'm remembering even more things that bothered me, but I think I've said enough.
  2. General Video Game Deals Thread

It's not that uncommon for getting a free game for buying a specific company bundle, some companies are generous enough that if you buy their "complete" bundle, you get one free? I know I bought the Humongous Entertainment bundle and when Steam got new Humongous games they were added to my Steam library. And speaking of deals, I just a bunch of cheap cheesy games from the Steam-O-Ween sale! I got the "Blood" series, the Bloorayne series and finally caved and got Murdered Soul Suspect suspects. I'm tempted to get Mystery of the Druid, but it look "boring bad"? They also have a Troma game that seems to be... Troma good?

I think you get it for free if you own enough (or the right) Double Fine games? It just showed up in my inventory one day.

I have played.... mostly visual novels? Belladona is a short adventure game about a "frankengirl" freshly awaken from the slab, trying to figure out who she is and how she got there... I really enjoyed it! Asphyxia is a VN about teenage girls based on British poets, I don't know enough about British poetry to know how this relates to the game, but it a cute and nice story non-the-less with some darker moments. WORLD END ECONOMiCA Episode 2 is well... I must admit I slept through a few hours of the VN, but since it's so long I eventually caught up and frankly, it didn't grip me as much as the first. The Royal Trap is a VN about a royal servant who ends up caught up in whirlwind of betrayal and potential prince dating. Oblivious Garden is kinda the opposite of The Royal Trap since in this case you serve and fall in love with Princesses, also this story has magic and very weird stuff that would spoilery. If My Heart Had Wings is a VN about a glider club and a girl in a wheelchair, I was very spooked when I saw Steam asked my ages and expected something "Hentai", but apart from a bath scene and beach scene(which is required by law by now) this game was so sweet and heartwarming to me. Life is Strange Episode 3: I already talked about it in the appropriate thread... Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, when I started this game, I remembered why I loved this series so much, but near the end, I realized why I stopped. I like adventure games, I like VNs, I like mysteries, but I don't like this mix. It can get very frustrating trying to trigger the next event, or finding the right clue and as the game advances, the new ideas are annoying. I lost so much time trying to figure out how taking fingerprints worked. But I love the story and characters... I kinda wish I didn't have to interact to make it continue.
  5. Life is Strange: Tween Peaks

I just finished episode 3 and...
  6. Comics Extravaganza - Pow Bang Smash!

There are more horror comics on sale at Comixology, including one that gives a whole new meaning to "Monster Trucks". They also have Lady Death on sale, I remember watching the cartoon and it was boring, but I don't really know the comic and Super Girl... I've never read Super Girl, I've seen her appear in other comics and cartoons, but I don't really know much about her. Are they good?
  7. Day of the Tentacle Special Edition

I just remembered Double Fine had a DOTT Beauty Contest.... Not many people participated, but at least Kerraldine, the best Lucasarts cosplay, managed to win the prize! Really, nobody was willing to put pasta on their head for some DOTT merch? I didn't participate because I assumed I would lose to any American with access to a costume shop, so I just told Kerry about it, and I guess nobody thought they could top her Laverne cosplay... Oops?
  8. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I had to quit Randal's Monday because I just couldn't stomach it anymore. Imagine an adventure game with Family Guy's sense of humor, only worse. The game is nothing but pop-culture references that are subtle is a bazooka. I jokingly say every adventure has it's "Obligatory Monkey Island Reference", but everything is a reference, I'm not joking when I say I don't think they go more than a few lines without some dumb pop-culture references. If that wasn't bad enough, the protagonist is the most unlikable person ever. I'm O.K. with him embracing the kleptomania every adventure character has, but he just has no empathy. I don't why I continued after this specific scene where he antagonizes a cop with the "I thought we had something special" talk, something that was already awful in the movies from the 80's who did this scene. I did quit when he did nothing but joke in front on the mangled corpse of his best friend. And of course, this game come from my country. And people wonder why I don't stomach any media from here, it's pretty much like what I just described.
  9. Comics Extravaganza - Pow Bang Smash!

Comixology is having TWO different Halloween comic sales and... They have Tarot now? Is that comic is as terri-awesome as I've heard or just bad? Just the covers by themselves are hilarious! Some of the horror comics in the REAL "comedy" section of the sale look really fun and cute though? The Two Posh Old Ladies Who Found Themselves in a bit of a Zombie Apocalypse? Sounds like my cup of tea!

I just completed Suikoden and boy does it hold up! I loved that you can recruit and even use almost anybody in your party, I got Sarah, the laundry lady, in my party and gave a water rune and made her a healer and she did a great job! I thought I almost messed up getting all the 108 Stars of Destiny, but I was very lucky and barely managed it. I really love this game, I love recruiting people and see them working in my castle and seeing my castle grow, you can even get your own character that can only say the name of the place it's in! Maybe the game is a bit easy, but it makes using whatever party you want in the game possible, what I didn't like was that most of the game you have a few spots in your party taken by characters forced in a scene by the narrative.
  11. Cartoons!

I just re-watched ALL of Jem and The Holograms while playing Suikoden and... It's just amazing! They can't go an episode without having one character almost dying, SEVERAL musical videos and the most ludicrously amazing plots.

Humble Bundle is having a Kemco JRPG Mobile Bundle and... I don't know any of these games. Are they any good?
  13. Recently completed video games

The last game I completed was Lost Planet 3 and it really had me thinking about my game tastes and dislikes. I always thought that I simply didn't enjoy fighting humans because it felt "wrong", but I finally realized WHY I don't like fighting them in this game, shooting humans in modern games usually means COVER based shooting, which I now know I really loathe, I'm more accustomed to fast paced shooters like Serious Sam and I just hate how slow cover shooters feel. And maybe I really don't like shooting humans anyway. And I'm not entirely sure why, but it seems I usually prefer to side quests to actual main missions, I'm not entirely sure, but I guess it's maybe because main missions are the ones that feel "sloggy", forced and unfun to me. As for the game itself, I'm surprised how much I enjoyed it, although since it's not really a cover based shooter until the very end for a mission or two, I guess it's not hard to see why I liked it. I kinda empathized with the character, he's just a guy hauling T-Eng in his "big rig" and fixing the constantly breaking mechanisms in a harsh environment. I really hated that the game ended in a sequel bait, specially since I'm not sure if we'll get another Lost Planet.
  14. I couldn't think of a better title: "Hey guys, how are you doing? Have you stopped to think about how many of the games you wanted to play that you actually did play and does playing all the games you wanted actually seem possible to you?" didn't fit in the text field. The great Lucasarts Playthrough thread and my upcoming vacation had me think about how many games that I want to play but haven't and I was pretty surprised at how little I have left to find and play. The Lucasarts Playthrough thread made me realize that I've played nearly every adventure game I wanted to, except maybe Willy Beamish and Orion Burger and the Humongous Entertainment games. I've never been able to find a copy of Orion Burger that wasn't in German via eBay or... other methods. ¬_¬U I realized that if I wanted to play Mother 3, I'd have to emulate, because of the fan translation. I'd have to emulate the Dizzy games for the simple fact that I no longer have any system that could run them. The best thing about catching up with older titles? They were made before the 20-60 hours everybody thinks should be a standard for every game today, even old RPGs are super short compared to any modern game. Have you ever stopped to think about older titles you haven't played yet? Do you actually think you might stand a chance of playing them all, if not owning them? I'd love to know!
  15. Catching up with you "retro wishlist".

I got Suikoden I-III on the recent PSN Classics sale, although I haven't played them yet. I played Arc the Lad Trilogy first and gave up close to the end of Arc II. :\

I just beat Resident Evil Revelations 2 and if Capcom decides to stop making "main" RE and only made the Revelation games... I'd be happy with it. Each chapter is divided in the Claire section and the Barry section which take time 6 months apart, the enemies you encounter in each are different and some are in both, they just have been decomposing for six months and are almost walking skeletons. In one chapter I way happy to find out that the levels I pulled that apparently did nothing unlocked things for Barry in the next section 6 months later. What I didn't like where the invisible enemies mostly because by the time my partner warned me about them and pointed where they were, I was already dead. I even played the extra missions, which add to the story and explain a few things left unexplained and confirmed my suspicions in the other scenario. I'm incredibly wary of "AAA" games lately, so the fact that I made it through and not only liked it but really enjoyed it must mean something!
  17. Let's discuss what a video game is

Sure, let's gamify the thread and each time someone says "that's not a game", they get 500 points and they'll get 2000 bonus points if they say "That doesn't make this thread a game!" Posters that continuously whine saying "that's not a game!" will ALSO be gamified.
  18. Let's discuss what a video game is

I'm sorry, but shouldn't this conversation be moved elsewhere? If we don't have a thread about "What is game?", we should.
  19. Recently completed video games

I beat Grim Fandango Remastered and I can't say much that hasn't said before, except that I was grateful for the commentary and finally being to play without tank controls... I did feel bad for all the abuse Manny gave to poor Glottis. I really hope the Day of The Tentacle also has a commentary track too.

I beat "Jim Power and the Lost Dimension", which I got because I had a hankering for a game with "16-Bit European Aesthetic", A.k.a. "probably has music from Chris Hülsbeck". The game really did satiate that hankering, the Steam version has the DOS and SNES version and I played the Enhanced SNES version, and I really hated the added "mode 7" levels and it was ridiculously brutal. In other words, maybe the next time I get this hankering I'll just listen to the Turrican soundtrack and look at great pixel art.
  21. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Can someone explain who Randi Harper is, the first hit I get in Google is Encyclopedia Dramatica and the rest seem to be of the same ilk.
  22. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I'm thinking of quitting the Arc the Lad Trilogy, it's funny how I willing did nearly everything in Arc 1, and was willing to do everything in Arc 2, but... The game is really feeling "sloggy" now. It's funny how close I am to the ending I am, but I just stopped caring, the game keeps sending me to destroy some dumb evil towers, only to derail me with a time travel story which is utterly boring. As I'm writing this, I'm realizing that the plot keeps throwing new bad guys and disasters, but no character development, although I'm pretty sure that the two lines a male and female character had will be enough for them to be madly in love by the end... Frankly I think Arc the Lad II is a bit of a mess, they introduce monster capturing, but never give you a reason to use monsters again once you have a full human team and it feels like half the items I collect are for the monsters because they are never worth using for the main cast. Nothing I find in chests seems useful and the items in shops seem worthless and the more I write, the more I wonder how on Earth did I play this much? A part of me wants to continue because I'm probably close to the finish, but... I just can't.
