So Much Ireland (Help me plan my trip!)
syntheticgerbil replied to syntheticgerbil's topic in Idle Banter
I don't think Garth Brooks understands how this works. At this point in his career, he NEEDS these ticket sales. -
Help me forget about Olly Moss and move on with my life

Trying to be friends with famous people on the internet always ends in sorrow. Don't do it! -
So Much Ireland (Help me plan my trip!)
syntheticgerbil replied to syntheticgerbil's topic in Idle Banter
Wait, why did all Garth Brooks concerts get cancelled? It's possible I could be confused with him being two large white men, but I think he's more bald than me in general. I got this red beard I've gotta show off there, since none of my other hair grows in red. -
That's sort of what I was referring to, that she got away with it by replacing all of the characters, since you can't really take pages of your fanfics around a con and sell them or charge online for a chance to read it. But I wasn't aware of the rest of that story. I'm pretty sure many professional artists aren't really looking to cater to fan artist's profit when they often sell prints of the IP they own from their own websites. Just takes potential profit from them since they will undoubtedly charge more and they own the rights anyway. It's easier not to care when you have something impersonal like Disney works with no real creator who is working at a loss, but then that is the one company everyone is afraid of treading on in terms of copyright law.

The constant overflow of fan works in the last decade or so is kind of making me sick. When people make good chunks of money going to cons or having online stores selling their prints off of copyrighted characters it stops being harmless fun and illegal and obnoxious. But that's not really fan fiction, I suppose you can't really profit off of something so obvious as writing a story about other people's copyrighted characters.

Isn't that pretty much the definition of in game sprites just in a (I'm guessing uncompressed) movie file? It's still a frame by frame affair.

Two Idle Thumbs Up - At the (Video Game) Movies
syntheticgerbil replied to Bjorn's topic in Video Gaming
It's bizarre because the company doing that movie put Heavenly Sword on hold (since it was originally a fan movie) and then moved towards production of the Ratchet and Clank and Sly Cooper movies. I don't actually think they will ever release anything. Why so many at once? Also I really liked the Prince of Persia movie, it was a lot of fun and looked very rich and dynamic despite Jake Gyllenhaal, because I hate looking at his god damn face. No one else did it seems. -

The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS
syntheticgerbil replied to Henroid's topic in Video Gaming
I think part of what makes Lanning unsettling to me is he tends to come off as a snake oil salesman but he's done nothing of the sort. I mean he's promised things that never happened but not in a seedy manner even though it feels seedy. I don't know what I'm saying but I'm saying I know exactly the feeling you have. Also part of it is his close relationship with Jason Manley and Massive Black in the past, the former who is the biggest creepy asshole and the latter being the creepy asshole's dubious outsourcing company whose business practices I don't always agree with. -
Haha, sorry to bring up that trauma. That lion looks so cute and plushy though.

Well, I'll give it that, because in turn I did enjoy the sense of accomplishment when finishing some of the more complicated Anniversary levels. It was kind of like climbing the final tower in Sands of Time, but nearly every level felt like that. I cheated maybe twice and instead failed over and over on most parts. The big tower in Greece was insane and clever, but it did feel like I was stretched thin to the point of exhaustion. Funny you and others on the internet traditionally find Atlantis hard, as I didn't seem to have a major problem there. It was all pretty much Greece and Egypt that were troubling for me. There wasn't a ton of breathing room between one challenge to the next outside of bosses, which is odd because bosses aren't really supposed to be breathing room. It's also been a while since I've had as many jump scares in a video game. Those meaty guys trotted so silently and there always tended to be some angry thing flying around every corner. Took me about three fourths of the game to finally catch on and keep my weapons drawn upon entering any corridor or entering a new area.

I guess I meant to ask because I don't really think of San Antonio being that big or having much game related. I would have preferred Houston, since I live in Austin and really tend to dislike this city, but I'm also never going to PAX so it doesn't matter.

I finished Tomb Raider Anniversary and doing the time trials now. It was okay I guess. It was really difficult to me and I hated how so many mistakes would not lead to insta-death but instead doing the same damn thing over and over again. I didn't expect it to be way more difficult than Prince of Persia and the like. I guess on one end of the spectrum there's Enslaved, which doesn't even want you to try, and then there's this Tomb Raider. I hope Legends and Underworld aren't so punishing on the platforming. My wife seemed pretty annoyed with Lara Croft being in the house, but I've always kind of wanted to play all of the Crystal Dynamics Tomb Raiders. You have become my least favorite forum member.

That would be cool. Why'd they pick San Antonio?

Grim Fandango being remastered for PS4 and Vita

It's exclusive to receiving some Sony money for production... right? -
"Print is so hard to read." Such old man. See, unlike Ubisoft game credits, movies tend to credit people who actually worked on the damn thing. Ubisoft gets away with nearly half hour long credits because everyone at all the 20 companies gets a credit every time.

Well that interview was a bust, for all of the reasons I didn't expect. Apparently as I was hoping, "Flash technical animator" did not mean coding but instead worker with programmers, which is great and what I'm used to, so I was happy for a second there. Then it all went wrong, part time really just meant that they might call me sometimes for work. Suddenly there was a want for me to be capable of everything but it was hard to tell because they were so awkward. The job description seemed more focused on art asset creation than actual animation. I seemed to be a disappointment that I only concepted characters for 3D and animated instead of also doing the modeling, rigging, and texturing part. Then it just kind of turned in to a continuing ragging on my style. I always try to get out of my comfort zone and match the style of the companies I work for, but it seems like even with the changes I make and pleasing art directors, when all is said and done I don't have a website that looks like anything except me, and that's bad because for whatever reason I don't seem to appeal to anyone. They don't actually have any artists employed there, it's always outsourced and they are trying local now. These guys have some dream of making some AAA game they have in mind, but have been doing casino games for years instead to support that dream. Protip, your AAA game is never going to get made. I don't think I have it in me to ever be a realistic painter either, which they seemed to be disappointed I don't have because I can't work on their AAA game in the mean time when there's no concept work. I don't mean to be one of those whiny artists that can't accept criticism because I try very hard when working under people, but I'm so tired and exhausted from just never being good enough or being the wrong fit for everyone. It's so disheartening and makes me feel like even more of a failure. Maybe I'd appeal to comics, but there's no money or actual job there for the amount of work, which is why I'm just trying to transition to motion graphics because it's so different and maybe I will start pleasing companies since I'm a good animator. At least I think I'm a good animator, no one has ever really complained and the stuff I do gets received positively. I guess I'm married but for over a year, I've been constantly unable to support us and I imagine she has a lot of opinions of my artistic failings and inability to get good work, but doesn't want to hurt my feelings. I guess I was hoping for something different from a company founded by ex-EA Sims developers.

That dog has always been fucking nasty. It's back is like that of a burn victim's with tons of blisters.

I think you'd enjoy Mind Game, Zeus. Probably will have to download it. It has the gags you will like.
-
Haha, as much as I love ICO (not so much Shadow), I loved that burn. Thinking more about Miller's Crossing, The Last Guardian was probably a marketing set up for the delayed Blu-ray release. Unfortunately it appears the campaign failed on many fronts.

I visited my dad for his birthday. He is stuck on some soundwave puzzle with three dials. He can't click the dials fast and precisely enough before the timer is out and he refuses to skip the puzzle. Gotta be nice to dads so that they can finish games in ways their old motor skills can handle. But yeah, point and click FMV adventures sounds about right. They are definitely much more interactive, well acted, and better designed than Gabriel Knight 2, known as the only other good FMV adventure. For the record, I like Mean Streets in all of it's broken ugly glory. Something about typing in the right subjects to characters and then alternating room searches felt like a nice mesh in between the easy action sequences. Luckily you can just use auto coordinates for the flight simulator part, slowly passing all of that bothersome control scheme.

This thread is all lies. This is not even a game. I don't even think this is a thread! The only thing this non game in a non thread full of lies should remind you of now is to go and rewatch Miller's Crossing.

That sounds great really. I don't know if there's an actor that could top Peter Falk, but I would maybe like a version with less hokey murders and leave all the hokey parts solely to Columbo getting distracted and asking about the suspect's fireplace or something. I didn't realize the classism until the second season when I noticed all of the episodes so far involved rich criminals and luxury type locations. Not sure if that formula is broken ever, but it's a different choice than what I would have expected. If they rebooted it, they'd just need someone who is just as nice and welcoming, no Dr. House.
-
I sort of agree, but then you wouldn't have gotten to see Ron Perlman. Also I've been watching a bunch of Columbo. It's pretty hokey and sometimes lulls into boredom (like most things from the 70s), but boy do I love seeing Peter Falk stumble around and hold his hand to his head.

Haha, Tegan. The best.
