Idle Thumbs 170: Esophagus Sarcophagus

How gross was the water? Oh yeah, I've been doing "intern" work for this game development camp in Austin for the last two sessions for my former art director/boss for about a year or so at my last company. She sort of quit games to create a camp to teach kids how to program and do art for games as well as just have fun and socialize with other like minded kids, usually sort of dorky and quiet. I've been having fun. I mostly just fetch things or help kids use Photoshop or animate as well as basic Construct 2 tutorials, but I'm no help on actually programming. But doing work there and hanging out with all of these kids has been a really different and enjoyable experience for me. It's ages 10-18 so I was nervous before I took the job because I remember kids being really mean in the 11-15 age gap, but most of these kids are super lovable. And it's so strange on how the younger groups tend to get more accomplished in a smaller amount of time, although this time there are some crazy advanced 17 and 18 year olds that might have some super serious prototype to show Friday. Also best part, my favorite kid to hang out with got my attention by yelling, "Shaaauuuunnnn!" It took me a second to realize he was referring to the Heavy Rain bug. Also this kid thinks the Shrek is Love thing is funny. He's 10 so I don't know what's up with his internet usage, but that's cool for the shock value I suppose. He's actually in his second session at the camp, as most kids usually do one. He's really eager to create games and do all of his own art even when he's not working with the group he's in and he goes home and does little tutorials and prototypes and brings them back to show on a USB drive. I was never as insanely productive as him as a kid and no one in the camp seems as enthusiastic as him even though he's sort of loud and rowdy. Another programmer kid was really mean to him today and made him cry, but later in the afternoon my boss and I played a bunch of Spelunky deathmatch with bombs turned up to 99 until he went home. I think he had fun. Anyway, I don't hate kids like I thought.

Idle Thumbs 170: Esophagus Sarcophagus

It's funny because it's said somewhere in the commentary for the U.S. version of Girl With the Dragon Tattoo that Daniel Craig was told to gain weight as the role required him to be pudgy, but I couldn't tell even when told I was supposed to be looking for it. I guess he doesn't have defined abs so he's pudgy? -

I feel like I'm the only one who really enjoys Alien 3. Maybe I'm biased because I am a Fincher fanboy, but I suppose the director himself disowns it as one of "his."The only thing that bugs me is the doctor's early demise, otherwise everything feels so creepy and I love the sets. Although, the only CG scene in Alien 3 is when the alien shatters. When it's crawling, it's all green screen. If I recall, at the time they could not afford digital effects or did not have enough time and so everything was done practically. However it's terrible green screen as you can see all the green reflection on the alien as it's superimposed on a set composed of reds and browns and it sticks out horribly, most likely more than bad CG would have I think Aliens is absolute shit and I try really hard not to ever say that because people generally start seething if they hear you say that. It looks cheap, both the playmobile car and the rubbery mass produced aliens, everything is a terrible one liner, and there's no suspense or really any stakes to be had because of such poor character development. It's almost like the movie was created solely to sell toys even though that probably evolved naturally. This is typical of James Cameron though and it wasn't until recently that I decided to watch the Terminator movies again did I realize how poorly written they were and how bad the dialogue was (again all one liner cliches). I guess that stuff doesn't matter as a kid. I had to stop in the middle of Terminator 2 I was cringing so much. I went on to watch the whole of Sarah Connor Chronicles which was surprisingly decent to great, considering all of the bad time travel logic they had to work with. I don't even know what to think of Alien Resurrection. I think it mostly suffers from Joss Whedon's typical awful writing (my opinion, don't be mad! I just cringe so hard when I hear stuff like, "He's been sucking down too much homebrew.") but Jeunet didn't seem to know what he was doing and completely dropped the ball. There's maybe some parts I liked but I can't seem to remember them. I know he was hired because of how great City of Lost Children looked and that would have hopefully spilled over into another Alien, but the movie looks so sterile and does not feel like the anything else director the director has done before and since. It probably shouldn't have been made. It's really bizarre to me because all of the other Jeanne Pierre Jeunet films rank incredibly highly to me, being very tightly filmed and edited as well as incredibly imaginative. Delicatessen, Amelie, City of Lost Children, A Very Long Engagement, and Micmacs are all so so good. Okay I still have to listen to the rest. Oops. -

Thanks, I usually think I'm pretty bad at fonts. -
Wait, who caused all of this? I got confused with with the order barking and sink bailing.

Considering Yahoo owns Tumblr now, I'm not surprised.

I hope I don't appear in this thread. I pretty much fuck up all the time, maybe even in this sentence. Is that even where a comma goes? Even if you tell me, I'll never learn. Hey I appeared in this thread. I don't get so annoyed with the grammar of others when typing unless it's truly bad. I prefer just not to hear the same thing over and over like, "interesting." Or, "Corporate accounts payable Nina speaking. Just a moment."

That guy is totally just pushing his vehicle fire agenda.

Holy shit, Digs, amazing recommendations, we will probably figure out in and put something solid on our itenerary. Also there was a major roundabout in the museum district when I lived in Houston, so hopefully I won't be too confused being on the other side of the car. -
I'm curious how they may pull it off. The series before seemed to really deviate, so I didn't bother. However, I listened to the radio plays this year and they were great and much easier to follow than the books, even though it loses a bit of Douglas Adams' novel pacing. One thing that never quite worked is that they made an attempt to add cell phones to first book, but really didn't make any sense in context with Richard and the answering machine. It'd pretty much have to stay in the era it was created solely because of that one plot point.

Introverts, social anxiety and multiplayer games

I generally hate getting on voice chat without my friends because that's an incredibly long time to talk to strangers. I don't know if it's social anxiety, but I just get either uncomfortable or bored. Also I get so accustomed to yelling things with my friends and saying offensive words that any other experience becomes weird 'cause then we gotta be polite around strangers. When I was trying to do some of the harder stuff for Iron Brigade, the two separate guys I found on the Double Fine forums on voice chat both were very nice and polite but it was like an hour or two barely saying anything unless it pertained to the game. -

Well, we are only going to be in Galway one day and my wife has the restaurant sorted out there. I'm just wondering in general of what to eat, but certain cities might be helpful too. I'm guessing Mexican food would be the worst idea. We are going to Galway, Derry, Belfast, Killarney, Drogheda, Dublin, Cork, Dingle, and Limerick. -
Well you're in luck, Parks and Rec gets even better from Season 3 to somewhere in 5 I think. It's maybe gotten way too wacky for my tastes, but I still watch every episode religiously.
