Idle Thumbs 173: Ridonkulous Rift
syntheticgerbil replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
It seems like these kind of promotions would have cost Nintendo more money than it's worth. Weren't VHS tapes pretty expensive back then? Plus these probably had printed covers and labels right? Then all of that shipping cost. -
That's one of the reasons I really disliked the guy ahead of time. He's also one of those guys who was largely screaming foul because Anita took footage from other Let's Plays on Youtube. I personally don't think that's wrong. If you do think it's wrong, I don't see how it's a big deal whatsoever in the case of wrong things to do. These people don't own the footage of the games and they don't legally have a leg to stand on. She obviously has a lot of work to do in terms of games to play and research, so I can imagine she can't be bothered to video capture and upload every damn thing she plays. TotalBiscuit is one of those guys who seem to be on the side that Let's Players are doing a lot of hard work out there (compared to actually making games) and that it's somehow infringing on their rights or profits. Really don't see it.

Jack Bros. in box seems to be among one of the rarest games ever. It sure fetches a lot. -
Today is Labor Daybor! (The Labor Movement and Video Games)
syntheticgerbil replied to MadJackalope's topic in Video Gaming
Hey MadJackalope who I know the real identity of , I really like what you're saying here and it is definitely in the spirit. Thinking of the last game company I worked at, I was given stuff to do on Labor Day weekend both Labor Days in the two years I was there. The second one had the strongly suggested option to float to a time when we were less busy so that stuff could get done for the ultimately bad games we worked that didn't specifically have a release day anyone was clamoring for outside of the shareholders. It always just grosses me out to think of the industry the way you described and it's really unfortunate there are no Unions and things like unpaid internships (often leading to actual published work) and copious amounts overtime with little thanks are still so rampant. -
I feel like I don't finish games anymore, but I guess I finished Tomb Raider Legend last month or the month before. It was pretty good but it felt a little bit uneven, the level design was a little bit sparse and uninventive in many cases, and the game felt way too linear. Combat was pretty shit, or at least functional but not fun. I did like the story a lot though even though it was kind of cheesy. I always wanted to know what happened next. The game was very pretty as well. I played the PS3 version if that's any reference. But more recently I finished Tomb Raider Underworld and holy fuck I enjoyed it so much. Not so into kicking pots to get treasures out of them, that was really weird and stupid for the collectibles in this game for someone who likes to collect artifacts, but oh well. But the game itself was so good. It scratched just the right kind of Prince of Persia/parkour itch I love. The puzzles and levels were inventive, the flow felt really even, and it was so god damn gorgeous. Combat was very much improved but was also muted as well as any boss fights stripped from the game. Apparently this was intentional by the designers so that they could have more focus on climbing and exploring. Good choice I think. There was a boss showdown at the end but instead it was done through level traversing, which I find a unique choice since every game of this type I have played ends with a sort of throwaway boss fight that is often times frustrating or sort of bad (Looking at you Enslaved). Maybe the story could have been better in Underworld though. I got the conclusion to everything but it was all so depressing and nothing really ended well except the villian was stopped. DLC continued the stuff but didn't really add anything extra.

Idle Thumbs 173: Ridonkulous Rift
syntheticgerbil replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Yeah this recent episode I was behind 100% and that part was so fucked up. I can't believe you do that in that series. I've never played them because probably it seemed very bro and I vaguely remember things about threesome minigames, but I imagine anyone who played the first two may have gotten kind of sick getting to 3 after investing all of that time. Like I don't even know where to begin, the lady is half naked and being thrown about, she is crying and pleading for her life, then you kill her in a grotesque way for a fucking door puzzle? What?! Oh, and then the trophy, cherry on top. I was going to make a flippant comment about David Jaffe, but it appears he didn't work on that game. Oh yeah: Oldest Bugs Bunny was my favorite. When he was a god damn jerk instead of looking around like he's cool and eating a carrot while Daffy argues about Rabbit Season. Also old wacky Daffy is fucking awesome. Miss him too. I don't even consider the characters as the same after Clampett and Tex Avery quick. -
She has very good posture!

Yeah I think I've changed my mind some on my gut reaction to Mike at Penny Arcade and condemning everything involved. A lot of my writing the guy off was fueled by my complete hate of the comic I've always had and a lot of annoyance at the non apologies. But I'd like to think the guy could change and maybe things will get better and more inclusive concerning PAX and such. That said I will probably never go to a PAX even if it were in or near my city and I hope there can be another huge video gaming expo out there to choose from. Not fucking Screw Attack though, ugh. I think part of it is on one side I found myself sort of defending Doug TenNapel as probably a good guy deep inside when Armikrog premiered on Kickstarter, even though the guy has constantly had shitty opinions for years and kept saying really offensive things on his gut reaction that he should have a right to say stuff and be a hateful right wing Christian, but then continuously apologizing either because he was truly sorry or more cynically wanting to not abandon his overwhelming audience of "lefties." I do hope he starts to grow after hearing that a long interview he had sometime in the middle of the Kickstarter campaign where he started to cry because he was struggling with the fact that his dumb opinions were affecting his friends and he has kids growing up that will mostly likely start disagreeing with him, but do fear that he'll be up to the same shit after the game is released. Agree 100%, though I'll probably continue to watch his videos. They don't really reflect the content of his crappy and flippant opinions, except for an unfunny side comment on his Titenic video which kind of marred an otherwise great video on some stupid bootleg games. My hope is he'll continue to think about this stuff, especially after the 30 minutes or so of discussion on the Cooptional podcast.

God that's messed up. I have the impression that pretty much every nonprofit would be comprised of decent empathetic people because of the subject of their employment and would not expect abusive bosses with a power trip. Glad you got out of there.

I think I'm just going to throw this out there because it's kind of been bugging me in this thread. I like JonTron's videos a lot and I guess I'm a juvenile for often finding them funny but I tend to gravitate towards liking things both high brow and low brow or some mix inbetween and often my tastes don't really lie with most of the games discussed on the Idle forums. It doesn't really bother me but I guess I sort of feel like I'm supposed to feel like a bad person or an idiot for liking JonTron. I find him a bit different than most of the Let's Play junk on Youtube (which I generally just avoid), even his run on Game Grumps is not really very good or listenable, but I think his videos are a lot of fun because they are well edited and snappy and generally approach games that no one would ever really talk about. His older videos when he started are mostly top 10 shit, but the stuff he's done in the last year I felt has been mostly flawless. So that said sometimes JonTron stuff is a little too base for me, but also sometimes Idle Thumbs podcast is a little bit over my head. I feel like that's okay, I'm kind of a stupid guy and it's really hard to find things that hit all the right spots. I used to think I was pretty smart and was righteous about it when I was younger but I kind of settled in realizing I'm a pretty mediocre dude as I get older. So that all said, sometimes I feel like a lot of the feminism in games going on has been getting extreme lately and sort of nitpicking but my take is that eventually it will calm down as things change and shift towards more equality of representation in this particular media and I can stop feeling on edge every week or a little bad about myself as a white privileged (? (I'm sort of a broke loser)) male. So back on JonTron, he has been a major butt lately and has been stirring the pot for what seems like no reason. He seems to think that he should speak up because he feels like he is taking a more moderate view and that people are getting too PC, but then in turn he gets held up as a pariah by a group of people that don't actually seem to really align their views with his, but think they do. There recent podcast that CynicalBrit runs with JesseCox and PressHearttoContinue sort of ends up with them trying to explain aspects of JonTron's thinking as wrong and my only hope is maybe he better understands his foolishness in things like calling someone retarded, linking to a terrible gang bang comic, or responding first to Tim Schafer that Anita Sarkeesian's newest video is somehow invalid because comments are disabled (did he miss why?) before actually making his point. So on the sensitivity issue I totally see where he's coming from as it bothers me a bit too, but I also wish he'd realize all the stupid shit he is doing and saying. He hasn't apologized once but at the same time claims that things do have to change with the representation of women in games, at least on that podcast, not his damn twitter. Also I really don't like agreeing with CynicalBrit's side because I really don't like that guy and this is before he stirred the Zoe Quinn pot with his stupid comments, but PressHeart made a lot of good points yet was spoken over a lot on the podcast which made me roll my eyes. I guess this is to say, I don't think JonTron is a bad guy at all, and he's not a misogynist, I will say that with confidence. He's not perfect and has a lot of understanding to do. I think if the guy were my friend I couldn't really hate him for having his opinion and sticking to it if he's not directly or intentionally trying to harm anyone but I would call him out on it and argue with him. And maybe a little of my personal life is in order here. I sort of think of people on Idlethumbs as friends or people I really like if that's strong and strangely a lot of people's opinions here seem to align very well. The current set of users here probably comprise my favorite Thumbs Forum formation yet. My real life friends don't really seem to align well either. I have a screenwriter buddy who hates the Bechdel test and finds it unfair and is also tired of a lot of nitpicking. One of my very best friends is a guy that still frequents 4chan and condemns Zoe Quinn, although I like to think I changed a lot of his thought after arguing with him recently. He's sort of a friend for nearly a decade ago and is my friend from when I was a much worse person and a major jerk, also being one to frequent 4chan, but perhaps I moved on a lot and he didn't so much. My wife is really big on slut shaming and doesn't see anything wrong with criticizing women for wearing too little or sleeping around. Another one of my close friends posts a lot in comments on Jezebel and a lot of gaming blogs crying for better representation of women in games and loving Anita videos, yet she likes to dismiss other women she doesn't like as bitches and cunts. I mean these people are important in my life and the most I can do is disagree with them, argue with them, and try to push them in the direction I feel is right, but I'm not going to decide they are no good or intentionally separate myself from them. I sort of forgot if I was going anywhere further with this post or had something else to say, so I'll just end it here.

Idle Thumbs 173: Ridonkulous Rift
syntheticgerbil replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Yeah that's the only thing, I'm still confused about a lot of details because I was on vacation and honestly I don't really care to get super in depth outside of the cliff notes, but when events aren't explained ahead of time, it sort of makes for confusing listening. I imagine if someone listens to this episode two or three years from now it will just be impossible to understand without trying to run through news archives. I've had this problem when delving backwards in to more than a few podcasts lately where I wish they would summarize a little bit more on what they are referring to, especially since it's often hard to keep up with a lot of controversy and I try to not follow these blogs and sites that bring it up everyday, Also Cat Soup is lovely stuff. -

I actually didn't expect it to be such a modest rerelease, but that is fine with me. I welcome it in fact. -
Holy Guacamole! Experimental MMO from 1999. DAVID mother-effin BOWIE!
syntheticgerbil replied to MadJackalope's topic in Video Gaming
I don't have anything to say on the original game, but in terms of multimedia weirdness, I used to spend forever played 3D Dinosaur Adventure. There wasn't actually any adventure involved, it was just going through a gaudy 3D museum and sometimes playing educational video games. Then you may get rewarded with a 3D video starring a T-Rex. It even came with red and blue 3D glasses for some scenes. Once I was looking through some junk in the backroom of the company that gave me my first animation job I got out of college in Houston and I saw boxes for 3D Dinosaur Adventure and I realized they did all the 3D graphics for the game twenty years previous. Was kind of neat. -
It's funny, I always have liked the North American Luke since that's who I know and I've always just kind of found him lovably annoying. But I don't mind the European voice actor. One of the earlier games you could unlock the voice over comparisons with enough picarats if I recall, since I think a few others were switched for the continents as well.

I guess I'm about a decade late with this, but... why do people dislike the Xbox 360 controller D-pad?
syntheticgerbil replied to cowuponacow's topic in Video Gaming
I can only speak to the 2D Zeldas because that is the only thing on that list I have played, but all Nintendo controllers where you play 2D Zeldas have only allowed you to use cardinals and I don't recall diagonals being hard to perform. Although maybe Link Between Worlds plays differently with the 3DS analog, but I haven't played that yet. But I still feel like even in a top down game where you move freely, if it has tiles you need to interact with you have to orient yourself around you probably need a defined cardinal. I mostly don't like the 360 d-pad when it comes to platformers. Like if I need to duck it's important I can easily press down. It's also horrid to play Castle Crashers on in terms of lining up enemies even though Castle Crashers was developed for 360 originally. -
I ended up seeing Mood Indigo the other day because Alamo opened another theatre that showed it a week after my vacation ended thank god. I don't know if I can really judge it though because it's the version that is missing 30 minutes that everyone was mad about. It was enjoyable even though there was so much going on and I really liked how the visuals matched up constantly with the tone, where the stop motion animations, color, and pace were in tune. Very much just an absurd film but in a good way. I tried for a while to figure out what was chopped in that 30 minutes, because the last part where the movie became very dark and sombre seemed to be very abrupt, which sucks. I'm guessing by the reviews it's forever going to be an uneven film, but I am so glad it was made.

I'm guilty of feeling this way, but I've pretty much let it go as of sometime this year because of a conversation with someone. I guess the binary gay or straight is just easier to understand, at least that's how I felt. Thunderpeel left the forum though so I wonder if he would have a different response these days?

syntheticgerbil replied to cowuponacow's topic in Video Gaming
It's the older Hori Pad, but it appears you can't purchase it anymore. You can do turbo button sequence command stuff and cheat as well as adjust the analog sensitivity, but mostly I just like how it feels. It's very solid and sometimes the RB and LB on the sides feel better for some games. -
I'm a fan of people bumping old threads pertaining to their subjects since they never get locked, but I don't think anyone minds if you don't. Considering about once a month someone starts this running joke where 5 separate threads are made of the same thing at the same time, I think you're fine. But, this is an intensely toxic community, beware!

The poorly written romance always bugged me when I first played it long ago and it never really gets better in any later game. They pull a Monkey Island 2 with Broken Sword 2 where the characters have broken up, but there really doesn't seem any difference between the way the two act toward eachother in the sequel. I sold all of my Broken Sword/Revolution games after finishing 3. A few months ago I was wondering if maybe that was a mistake and I'm really missing out with all of these director's cuts, but I think it's probably best to leave these games in the past for me.

I honestly don't consider it a proper d-pad if you can mush the diagonals as a separate button. I feel like the purpose of a direction pad is to have an outlined up, down, left, and right, and you push two together if you need a diagonal. The way the 360's d-pad is set up makes it almost function like an analog stick. But you already have an analog stick, two of them, so why put another? To me the way the 360's d-pad is made is very much like a shitty catch all like this 90s piece of crap: So I play PC and Xbawks with this instead. (Apparently it's official with Microsoft?)
