Not one of the largest, the largest. Absolutely vast in what channels the network owns and then add to that, that it's parent company is Disney. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maker_Studios The Disney part tends to never be mentioned and unless maybe some of those concerned parents rallied Disney, keeping it called Maker kind of keeps a nice wall between them. I'm sure all of this controversy is extremely good for the business, whether they have a bunch of channels at odds with eachother and some members spewing hate speech. At the end of the day, the ad money continuously flows to Maker which flows to Disney. Sucks we all had to even click on that TB podcast to hear Stephen Totilo. There is no reason for the parent company to end TB's behavior.

Idle Thumbs 183: The Anonymouses

Hey, I think this theme song is pretty damn good. (It doesn't get said enough.) -
Hah, you love those don't you? I wish people would make them to songs that weren't by Trans Siberian Orchestra, like this:

Some heartless jackass makes a fake Majora's Mask HD trailer because he hates me, specifically
syntheticgerbil replied to Udvarnoky's topic in Video Gaming
Haha I'm so glad this thread was bumped for this. I was crossing my fingers as the page loaded! Do you think it would be a bad thing for them to skip the need to refight the bosses to change an area when you go back to day 1? Like I imagine some people might think that it is making the game too easy, but I found it kind of pointless to keep refighting all of the bosses. I think a button on the touchscreen or maybe a song on the ocarina to just change over the area to it's "fixed" state would suffice. Also holy fucking shit would this game benefit from a mask selector like Ocarina of Time 3D getting the fucking boot selector. Man, for a game about masks, switching masks was often very tedious. I'm just very excited because I was very happy with all of the Wind Waker changes. -
Hah okay? Do we only assess death threats only after someone is killed now? What country has a law enforcement agency that does this? In some off hand thread on Neogaf, I saw one of TB's fans touting his intelligence by saying something like, "He's a lawyer or at least studied law at some point." Wikipedia does indeed say he took some classes. Guess he didn't get too far.

Yeah I found out about that Something Awful thread a couple of years ago and it pretty much started the change in my opinion of some random Youtube guy who just talks about the games to noticing he's a drama causing narcissist who is more there to self promote and listen to himself talk. All the while he is a major component of the Polaris million dollar empire. I don't know how many millions he contributes, probably not much, but they do own Pewdiepie. The demanding an apology stuff is just over the top considering no one was directly harmed unless it was a GamerGater attacking and threatening women. And for juxtaposition, there's this this egregious personal attack which Total Biscuit has never apologized for. I looked up some people discussing this podcast on Reddit and saw some of these "ethics now" dudes saying this is a "start." Start to what? An apology? If anything I felt like this podcast was very important and there's pretty much nothing else to say here. Leigh Alexander is not going to stop writing opinion pieces because there's a chance someone on the autism spectrum may cry. Totilo has made the policies as clear as they are ever going to be, made his changes to reflect these policies, and will err on the side of transparency from now on. Two things from that podcast I found absolutely hilarious in how irrelevant they are: 1) Asking Stephen Totilo to discuss the ethics of *Polygon's* Bayonetta review. He has no say in that sites take on reviews and rightfully so. It's a site with a different opinion whether it's agreed or not. 2) Bringing up someone writing an article calling rabid Devil May Cry fans "babies." Again opinion pieces, and that fan outrage was totally ridiculous. That's one of the things I'm especially glad journalists are there to defend, because it turned into a weird witch hunt on Ninja Theory and Tameem. Those weirdo fans still follow around any piece of Ninja Theory news or Tameem articles saying negative things to this very day. All of this consumer first shit is so stupid. The way I break it down is reviews are consumer first and will always subjective. Journalism is and should be always be developer first and objective as possible. Like, what exactly is Total Biscuit asking for with this crap? For censorship to be had because of hurt feelings? This isn't hate speech. Also further reading of this stuff on the reddit by Jason Shreier that I think is quite good.

Never apologize, if only we could have more necros, christ. I'll never understand the hate of other forums when bumping threads where everything can go in one nice neat package.
-
Yeah I mean, the original is doing it because it's neat to see and he did it first. But I guess it's weird people want to show off with something so unoriginal. At least pick a different song, you know?

Really good/older games found in 2nd hand shops
syntheticgerbil replied to watters50's topic in Video Gaming
Okay fine, I'll do something in this thread. I have a lot of rare crap and all of my games are always complete in box. Besides things long ago where I used to frequent flea markets in Houston where I got most of my older consoles working and super cheap, that was all like 2004-2007 and doesn't necessarily work so well these days in terms of deals as large tubs of equipment aren't very remarkable anymore and most resellers know what stuff is worth. You're never going to find a top loading NES for cheap now. Probably the best deal out of what I recall was a clear green N64 with controller (which didn't match) for $10, and a 32x with adapter for $5. However, as is usual with every fucking 32x, it was missing the cord and people sell these fucking cords for more than the actual 32x is worth, some people even "making them" and were selling them for $30 or more a pop. The connector was a 8 pin DIN connector but my dad showed me the 32X and Genesis both have 9 open pins. Turns out one pin isn't used and I bought a cheapo very common 9 pin connector from Fry's for about $2 and it worked fine. Looks like the actual 8 pin connector is manufactured by a third party Chinese company now, so the cords are more like $8 now, but you can still buy the 9 pin from Fry's for $5 according to the site. So I play the eBay game and I also resell things I no longer need complete in box if a compilation release comes out, like getting rid of Kirby 64 or Kirby's Dreamland 3. Although with those I kept the manuals since there were no scanned manuals on the disc like the Sonic collections. So a lot of stuff I have found on eBay tends to be deals because I was on it a little bit earlier years ago like: - I won Snatcher complete for Sega CD for $70 at a time when that was about the going rate. Now it's $250 and up everywhere. - I bought Earthbound's cart, guide with cards intact, and a rental box all for under $100 separately. - I purchased that super rare PC Adventure game U.F.O.s complete from GameTZ, when people used to use that in the late 90s/early 2000s. - When Sierra was still owned by Havas, I purchased the Space Quest Collection new for $20 when it was on sale from their mail catalog. I remember because I had to mow a few lawns and then pay my dad to order it. That thing was worth a lot for a while but when Activision or whatever rereleased it on DVD, the value died, but it's barebones and missing stuff like the compilation manual with drawings and fun stuff from the original boxes. - Similar thing with the Ultimate Pleasure Pack for Leisure Suit Larry, it's retained it's value because Activision will never rerelease Larry 7 because of the hidden sex scene (which is really not explicit) despite Al Lowe giving them instructions on how to easily change the code for it and delete the video file from the disc. My most rare eBay win is the Sega CDX, I got rid of this hulking multi adaptor shit: And turned it into this: No one really bid because it was untested and it was missing all of the cords. Well I had a set of Genesis A/V cords which work just fine and I found out you could use a multi-connection laptop adapter and set it to the proper 10.5 Volts. Not sure if this particular multi-connection adapter is easy to find anymore since 10.5V is a weird setting and everything is going to USB adapters and there's not much use for this stuff anymore. And I probably have a bunch of other junk that is worth a lot more now just because I am getting old and I just snagged it at the time. Never any rare finds at Half Priced Books or anything like that. At least not significantly rare enough to give me some kind of great deal. Really Half Priced Books checks the value on all of that stuff now anyway and puts it in a locked case if it's valuable. The only time I ever had a deal going on was when I purchased like 30 Mario 3 Advance e-reader cards from Gamestop about 2005 for 1 cent each. I sold them all on eBay a few years later for about $20 a pop, since I already knew they were becoming rare and it seems like only this particular Gamestop in town was trying to unload them. It sucks because I see them go for about $100 now for a sealed pack. Hmm, I also like those repro carts too, especially when people make a manual and box. But there are no deals to be had there. I have Devil World, Earthbound Zero, Mother 3, Famicom Tantei Club for SNES, and BS Zelda. I badly wish I could afford BS Zelda: Ancient Stone Tablets right now as I see people have figured out how to make those carts work in terms of the map days with the reset function but they go for about $100. Makes me sad. -
I can't respect a man who takes 8:23 to do something so simple, no matter how dumb. Learn to fucking edit, I only have about a minute to waste on stupidity like this.

That moment killed the show for me. Be prepared to be bored the whole rest of the season. I love hearing Kevin Spacey say, "Why no, I would never do that!" a billion times. Great writing.

You know what's weird? I remember in 2003 when I was in high school the rich neighborhood for our district had like 2-3 houses doing this exact song with similar light shows all night every night for December. Why even do something so original if you are not getting any money for it? It seems like timing all of that up for something that's been done is not worth the work. Especially since you have to hear that song nonstop.

I'm at 50 minutes, I don't know if I can finish. Definitely Totilo is noting but reasonable and balanced here, but it's like Total Biscuit has no clue of what ethics in journalism actually is STILL. There's parts where Stephen Totilo is explaining to him the ethics of some of his decisions and then TB will just respond with some kind of weird "gotcha" thing. Like him thinking Patricia Hernandez needs to apologize. Like he doesn't even concede that it is sort of humiliating enough to have your article edited months later with a disclaimer of disclosure. If you had an apology article just for that, it would be useless and then it would just create more gossip journalism. Then he gets mad that other sites reported on and linked to Leigh Alexander's article. That's meaningless and besides Leigh Alexander wrote an opinion piece, and she's sort of a journalist celebrity that people want to read the opinions of, so it's sort of a big deal. Just as much when she wrote about Bioshock Infinite. And then the article hurts the feelings of children on the autistic spectrum? That's such a stretch. Opinion pieces are not there to worry about not offending each and every person who may read it. Gah I can't stand Total Biscuit. He's such a putz, which is a shame because he has a great radio voice, although that's probably the only reason he even got this far.

Wait wait wait. I'm about 17 minutes in. Why is this Game Jam article such an issue? It's not a review and it was accurate. I thought GamerGate people were always mad about the later mention of Depression Quest which was not in a review, not the Game Jam article which has nothing to do with promoting any game. Either way unless you feel angry that Makar/Polaris/Disney was smeared, which TotalBiscuit obviously needs to, as even though he wasn't at the Game Jam, those are his bosses. Why does he not disclose that these are his bosses? If I cared about conspiracy theories, I would say it's not a leap that maybe TotalBiscuit is being paid extra to skew against the perception of Polaris/Makar/Disney that that article created. The only thing that annoyed me about that article is it ended with many people going to Disneyland. Oh, I wonder why?! Also if we go by a quote from Zoe on Eron's post, Zoe cheated on Eron with Robin Arnott one night of the Game Jam, not Nathan Grayson. The Nathan Grayson connection is later, even though Steven Totilo admits there may be some kind of murkiness there's really not. If the quotes from Zoe on Eron's post are indeed legit, then she was not sleeping with Nathan yet, unless we are to assume she was juggling many guys at once. But that's an assumption not based on anything either from the Eron, Zoe, or Stephen Totilo side just misogyny. Does it not obviously read as this is a reporting that probably later led to a relationship with Nathan and Zoe and not any time before? There's no evidence of anything but this. Oh wait... it's Gamer Gate.

Yeah man, glad you made it through that. I'm sure you know this, but continuous lack of sleep can really eat away at your wellbeing and lead distorted thoughts that aren't so healthy. It seems like school is maybe going to be a stressor on you, so maybe it's better to take time for yourself?

Twin Peaks Rewatch 4: Rest in Pain
syntheticgerbil replied to Jake's topic in Twin Peaks Rewatch Episodes
I think I need to rewatch this episode, I had it on last night while I was doing stuff, but I was zoning out as it was sort of just a plot thread linking episode. Also for whatever reason, I recalled this embrace of the supernatural stuff not even happening until Season 2. Don't know how I mixed that up. -
God I seriously felt like I wanted to vomit after the disco level because of the motion sickness I got trying to collect all of that shit to 100%. Ugh. I don't even think I've felt motion sickness in a video game before either.

This this this! Since my wife and I have to travel to another city, we tend to spend the night at her parents because they have more money than mine and have a nicer guest room and not a small claustrophobic house. Also she likes spending more time around her parents and her mom is a good cook. I generally try to get away from my parents since my mom really loves drinking around Christmas time and my dad is only interested in talking about how much Obama sucks and Muslims are coming or some shit. ...Maybe I do like her family better. Hmm, although they are boring and tend not to talk though. I'm big on talking to people I'm close with. Also thanks Rodi for keeping the tradition alive.

Cyberpunk Cop Killah (aka The Last Night)
syntheticgerbil replied to singlespace's topic in Video Gaming
Well part of my cheap shots at the article is most of my frustration with all of this mess, people continuously referring to gossip sites for their news and arguments. Either way, I should pretty much say I disagree with not bothering to control your tone anyway. These articles seem to think that no matter what by failing control your tone makes people use it as a strawman to dismiss your opinion so therefore you're opposition is in the wrong. I think what actually happens more often than not is no one wants to talk to a person who is acting like a jerk so they leave the conversation, hence why a lot of newer users just don't even bother in some of these threads after like one or two messages. Plus I don't see how tone policing has anything to do with continuous bombardment by 10 different people typing paragraphs of the same thing to someone who may disagree. That's just being plain overwhelming. On a personal leve, it hardly has ever worked well for me in real life or on the internet to just completely get pissed and believe me I know it all too well as most of my early 20s were filled with me not controlling myself in any manner. The theory with anger management is that continously being angry becomes a drug, like how policemen feed. I find unless you are preaching to the choir, making yourself seem like a complete jerk to the opposition for the sake of argument generally doesn't really accomplish a thing unless it's seriously a personal attack and for the sake of defense. It seems maybe this Pol guy said this stuff very recently? I don't seem to see that Tim Soret started following him after that. I would like him to come back and clarify that, as that's really shitty. -
Well that about sums it up, really.

Don't do it, the only good Yoshi's Island is the first, the rest are third party crap. Also Yoshi's Story is bad even though that's supposed to be the direct first party sequel. It's not even near the same besides throwing eggs. There's no way Yoshi's Island is objectively bad. I don't even get it, the game is like Mario World on steroids and lots of great ideas and controls. Plus it's beautiful. I think most people have a special place for Yoshi's Island in their kidneys. Although thinking about it, besides the cutsy art style, I don't think Yoshi's Island is for kids. Seems like a lot of levels are too hard for younger less experienced players, even if you aren't looking to 100%. I guess the good thing about Yoshi's Story is it's great for kids because you can eat 30 fruits ASAP and ignore almost 90% of the game and beat it in less than an hour. What bad design.
