  1. Idle Thumbs 201: Adults Only

Why? Who? I don't get reddit.
  2. Idle Thumbs 201: Adults Only

Caramel... Mocha? I swear there was a level in some Mario game called Caramel Hills or somehing, but I can't find anything on it so I guess I am wrong.

I'm just stating what I think, it's not an argument without both parties engaging. it's not a binary. And no, I'm not gonna bother (just like the vegan thread) so I won't bite at your insult.
  4. The Ultimate Playthrough, Metal Gears!?

I am not sure if it's ever truly explained except maybe in a codec conversation somewhere in 2, but La Li Lu Le Lo is just another name for The Patriots... just because. Just seems to have been a random string of syllables. A little bit more of a spoiler from MGS2, which is safe for you to read NinjaSquirrel: Definitely MGS1 is much better in my opinion. All agreed here.

    Motion blur cat.

That article is ridiculous. I think it's being approached as if arguments were exclusively about winning or losing as their sole purpose in humanity but often I've found in life exhaustive arguments are just there to try to understand. If someone feels like they won something after the end of an argument then it's pretty insignificant, unless it's your court case but whatever. Arguments have a way more complicated place in human lives than just some kind of battle. Even solely at the workplace which this seems to only refer to. Also why have pictures in that article? If the picture of a deflated football just looks like a bad drawing of a regular football, maybe it's better not to have pictures at all.

I had a friend who was exclusively into Final Destination 2, I guess that explains why.

Poor Spot, he seems similar to a nice lap dog.
  9. anime

Well there you go, you will like Stand Alone Complex.
  10. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Oh, I thought he was defending some kind of work of art or a game or show or something without seeing the original link. Yeah that makes sense about how ridiculous it is then. I am pretty sure threats aren't works of art.

You're equating both on the same level and considering the the source material for GitS it's really not like that. Also Faye Valentine is not the main character and therefore doesn't have as much screentime as the major and besides some shots (mostly the bikini part in that one episode), it's not really a show fixated on the male gaze, just check out some screenshots and compare. If anything she's often postured in a very slovenly way as one of the dudes and despite her clothing is not generally postured as fanservice. This is, sure, in contrast to some of the promo images created by Toshihiro Kawamoto who in his art book often tailors the characters depending on what medium they would be portrayed in. So Faye for DVD covers and more official and distributed art tends to be give action poses from the show while he drew her posed gratuitously as sort of pin ups for magazines. This of course doesn't help my case, but there's a big difference to me between sexy promo images of Faye vs. stills from the show itself. Anyway, I'm not going to convince you guys of anything and you're not going to convince me either so I don't think there's much else to say here. I did find this great series of blog post posts in the meantime of all of the GitS incarnations, so maybe it's worth a read. I found it interesting nonetheless.

Personal anecdotal evidence does not eliminate that Tokyo Godfathers is very mainstream, widely reviewed, and well liked. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/tokyo_godfathers/

I get the feeling only if they are men and if they want to philosophize the nudity of cyborgs. It's still loaded with fanservice and feels very much like a relic of sleazy imported 80s and 90s anime that appealed to only one demographic. Things have moved much further than the baseness of Ghost in the Shell these days. I don't know what to say other than it is not a show/movie/comic that will ever capture the same general and enthusiastic audience as Cowboy Bebop or Tokyo Godfathers. On a personal level though my main problem is just everything about Ghost in the Shell is boring. The movie is just way more shallow than it wants to be and feels pretty uneventful. All characters are impossible for me to care about. S.A.C. is just so slow and dry that is why I gave up. It doesn't help how scaled back the drawings are and howlimited the animation is either because there's not even eye candy in the meantime.

Wow, perfect name, that cat is the cutest. Okay fine this is a great thread.
  15. anime

No I've seen about six episodes of it before I gave up, it's pretty over the top and out of context with the tone of the show, moreso than the original movie. I don't know why you are sarcastically equating it with every other piece of modern media ever since there are variables but obviously you know that and I know that. I mean at least there are no explicit lesbian sex scenes from the comics, but you know. It's clearly not a show for people who are not generally interested in anime. Also the mixed media 3D robot animation looks terrible.
  16. Meow.

    Wow, Varin is indeed beautiful.
  17. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

So what is the context? Your link goes to someone else's Twitter and I can't even see what was originally posted or what kids are about and instead it's like 60 people just echoing the original sentiment. Jesus Christ, Twitter, argh.
  18. Meow.

Fine then I'll look at the pictures and that's it. Here's my cat, my sister watched him once for a week and people put stuff on him and took a picture because you know, the stuff on my cat meme. He likes iPads too: Now Sam is an attention whore: Fargo doesn't give a shit about fires: Or Toys:

Well the problem with animated movies being voiced by celebrities is usually celebrities have no fucking clue how to voice act. That said, you could have a place like Funimation who uses bad voice actors so the celebrities aren't as bad in comparison. I don't know why most productions are so afraid of paying voice actors that do a great job in multiple productions and not exclusively piss poor anime. Tekkon Kinkreet and Paprika did though if I recall, but I think that was because they were a Sony pictures release as opposed to Disney or whatever.

Does every new page in every thread now need like three posts addressing that there is in fact a new page and spamming the hell out of it? Look, see even I'm adding to it now. Never again though.

Yeah but why does she walk around wearing that outfit? Seems like it's still catering to the jerk off material crowd. Yeah I think it's more like Tetsuo is unique in that he can wield psychic energy so well, but Akira still trumps him. There are multiple children and characters who can use the energy though so it's not like Tetsuo is really that chosen, he just happens to become a psychopath with it. Either way it's not typical chosen one because he's chosen to be the worst force of destruction as a parallel to the atom bomb? Unless Kaneda is chosen, but there's a lot of people helping take down Tetsuo, Kaneda was just his best friend. But I think you'd probably like Samurai Champloo and Michiko and Hatchin, as far as shows. Maybe Ergo Proxy might be your thing? It's a bunch of scifi with a light amount of pretentiousness. It also sort of has a chosen one thread though but I still greatly enjoyed it. I think you should also track down Mind Game, Tokyo Godfathers, and Tekkon Kinkreet in terms of movies. I kind of hate a major amount of Japanese cartoons and so have not much to say in this thread, so maybe my tastes would be similar to yours.

Sorry guys, I like cats and I have two but I can't think of anything more boring than hearing about someone's cat unless it's absolutely extraordinary. At least not without context of having met the cat. But continue.
  23. Feminism

I guess the next revolution in this bloated superhero drivel is now the women will have pants. I suppose that is acceptable.
  24. Life

I read about one Discworld book a year, I have only finished 11 so far though. Good Omens is one of my favorite books as well. I think when I complete all the novels, how much I will miss him will truly kick in. Also I hope things work themselves out for your work situation JonCole. And Tegan I am glad you can now embark on the next phase of your life in Halifax. Congratulations.

There's more than a few unique shows and movies out there but I don't think any really match whatever mashup is going on in Cowboy Bebop. Something similar in tone may not really exist but there's plenty out there for people who don't like anime. I'd say Michiko and Hatchin is far closer to Samurai Champloo but neither really capture the more somber and space jazz action of Cowboy Bebop. It has plenty funny moments but in general the show is kind of sad, the movie driving this tone home even moreso.
