Idle Thumbs 209: Ten Percent Success Rate
syntheticgerbil replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
On J Allard's bike thing, he recently upped his game from 529 and became the founder of Portland Police Bureau Theft Task Force, appointed by the chief of police. He's not fucking around. I now have this image of a big awkward dork who obviously is not a cop but is still on a power trip like he is. I know this because there was that thread where Mington was being a creepo and somehow we both got Allard to add us on Linkedin just 'cause and I get his career updates to my e-mail. -

Plus everyone says ASS ROCK. Time Warner was messing with my modem over the phone once and asked me why an ass rock was connected. -
Yeah, I'm surprised it's his. I thought I specifically read in another anime thread we used to have that Chris did not like Akira because it still had typical anime tropes from that time like floating rocks, hair that stands up with power, etc. Or were they typical before Akira? I don't know. Dragon Ball Z comes to mind. The Bandai release is utterly useless though. It's bare bones and the Funimation has most of the stuff from the Pioneer DVD release, if not all. I think it's missing the storyboards? I don't own it yet so I'm not sure, but that doesn't matter because I have the books of them. One thing I want to watch with that release is the original dub where Liquid Snake is Kaneda, as I have never heard it. I have heard clips where is sounds super stilted which is odd because all of these people ended up doing a lot of professional voice acting for recognizable characters. Jan Rabsen is Tetsuo who is also known as Leisure Suit Larry, which is fucking hilarious. Alamo just showed the original voices with subs since the presenter made a big deal on the prerecorded vocal track (although he claimed animation hadn't really done that much before Akira, perhaps he just meant in Japan). I haven't seen the newer dub but I've heard clips and it generally just sounds like everything I hate about low budget anime dubs with non union actors. At least Funimation didn't redub it with their garbage work.

Idle Thumbs 208: Buds are Out, Keys are In

Wait, I don't know how big St. Martin's college is, but couldn't that song have been written about a multitude of people? '83 to '88 seems like a long time for Jarvis to have been there. Wikipedia says '88 to '91. But if I recall from a Pulp documentary he maybe enrolled a bit earlier than that and took a few classes but was too broke? It's been years. There's no reason for him ever to reveal who it is anyway. -
I vaguely remember that episode but who was talking about the booklet? Was it Nick? God that was like 6 years ago. I'm dying.
-
I had to look up what the hell you were referring to. I never had that pressing of the Blu-ray with that "special" booklet plus it was missing the graffiti translations and other features from the DVD. It was really expensive at the time if I recall.

I saw Akira in theatres like a week ago. But I've seen Akira five times already. Was fun though, never really appreciated the sound effects and music like that before.

It's possible Zeus did too? I forgot. I cheated in other parts of Grim, but not kitty hat time.

It's because it's a demo for a game which everyone now knows won't ever get made and that is all that is left to show of it. Then add to that that only an exclusive number of people now have it. It's not often a playable demo comes out publicly for a cancelled game (examples?) and usually all you get is a trailer or two instead.

Twin Peaks Rewatch 28: The Path to the Black Lodge
syntheticgerbil replied to Chris's topic in Twin Peaks Rewatch Episodes
I saw that Reddit thread about the purposeful mishandling of technology in TV shows and I'm skeptical. I found it looking up Life which I did because of Idlethumbs. Like I can believe a lot of them are doing a shitty job on purpose because they work on disposable shows and have no appreciation for what they are working on and don't care about the integrity. I just really have a hard time believing not only so many writers do a mediocre job because they think it is funny but that directors also think it is suitable to troll with bad technology logic and effects. I get the feeling there's gotta be some rookies out there who just want to write a good episode that makes sense and is relatively well researched. Maybe they quickly move on to better quality shows though or start moving on to movie scripts so there's no overlap. I have no idea how it works. -

You know, why didn't he just have a save game at the Chariot level? Then he wouldn't have to do all that work. I suppose that scene wouldn't have been as intense that way. -

Well I'm a big Jeunet fan, I see every movie that he comes out with even though they take at least 3-4 years it seems. I really think A Very Long Engagement would be way more worthwhile to watch than Amelie, since it's kind of played out, but the film has generally be ignored and I don't think it's streaming anywhere. So it'd have to be torrented or require a DVD purchase. I've never liked anything Whedon, I can't stand his dialogue style, it's always been like watching a Ninja Turtles cartoon where everyone has some quip. I know there's a billion Whedon fans out there, so everyone don't be mad at me. But my bias is towards visual world building films anyway, I couldn't care less about Kevin Smith types who just rely on dialogue to carry the whole movie. Man I saw this years ago near Halloween and I don't think I could stomach it again. The gore and the way it deals with underage sex just kind of grossed me out. It was pretty engaging though. -
I'm in a class right now where we have to present our sketches and ideas and references before we finish the project and there's some people in here that either do no work, can't draw, or can't gather any kind of interesting reference. Even though we generally have 3-5 hours of required lab time per week to gather something to show. So because of this, I guess they have to show their creativity by rambling a whole fucking lot. It goes on forever, like two hours of half the class just blabbing instead of showing. Motion Graphics is a visual medium, what are these people doing by telling instead of showing? And I try to have as much sketches and such as possible to show and be concise so I spent 5 minutes max talking, if that, and let the images do the rest of the work. Instead I have to sit through about 15 minutes of certain dudes in this class repeating themselves in 20 different ways. It's like I'm back at the last game company I was at where the dudes calling the shots up top who could not draw would make these 2-3 hour meetings just talking about all of their ideas to the artists because that is considered working. But I think unlike that company what really drives me batshit in this class is every single one of the students that have this verbal diarrhea talk so god damn slow. They have frequent pauses, say "like" more than any other word and fill in a bunch of gaps of things they haven't thought of by doing 3 second long uhhhs and ummmms. Arggggh! Then sometimes they get stuck in a loop because I guess their brain broke so it goes, "like uhhhhh like uhhhh like uhhhh." Kill me. And now I feel a little bit better after yelling that on the internet to people on Idlethumbs.

Thinking more about that episode of Life, the killer/drug dealer has to get to the chariot section in Prince of Persia to access his drug dealing spreadsheet. That's at least two hours of play time if you speed run. Seems incredibly impractical. -
Top strip? Do you mean the top mini USB port (if you are right handed)? Mine worked briefly. But my tablet is an Intuos 4, Isn't that an Intuos 3 that Lu has (that has the unattachable cord)?

Hey do you have more animations? I enjoyed that a lot!

syntheticgerbil replied to Apple Cider's topic in Movies & Television
According to Whedon it's all Jeunet's fault. That's bullshit though, Jeunet has no bad films besides Alien Resurrection. Speaking of Jeanne Pierre Jeunet, are any of his movies suitable for a more feminist perspective? They tend to star women or at least have them playing a major role. City of Lost Children might be especially interesting because of Miette. Maybe Amelie and A Very Long Engagement as well. Also what about Pan's Labyrinth? -

Yeah that part is the most disturbing to me out of most things in the movie. It was definitely intentional as an act of sexual violence going by Ridley Scott's commentary track. -
I have the Quadrilogy Blu-ray set sitting there unwatched for years, having gone through the DVD version long ago, so I could make myself through Aliens again, but god the second movie is garbage. Most people don't think that so I'd just stink up the thread discussing it.
