"There is no uncanny valley any more," declares French developer
syntheticgerbil replied to Wrestlevania's topic in Video Gaming
Hahahah, funny how all of this "new" mo-cap technology creates acting similar to what was achieved Grand Theft Auto 3, albeit with more polygons higher textures. This stuff isn't even on par with Monster House or Polar Express in terms of motion capture acting, both of which I thought were very poor as well. What's up with that dude's cleft on his upper lip? This thread on AG is good for a laugh because of all the pro-game trolling that goes on and then the disappointment that starts to sink in. Well, can it actually be trolling if it's overtly positive? Anyways: http://adventuregamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22964 I may be wrong, but I imagine about some of the users in that thread are plants from the company there to cheerlead. -
Monkey Island 1 special edition coming to XBLA
syntheticgerbil replied to Marek's topic in Video Gaming
This news makes me very nervous. I just can't see anything good coming out of it since LucasArts seems so incompetent these days. The Rogue Book only magnified what a mess of a company they have become. But I guess this depends on whatever third party they send this out to. It's possible by making a special edition, they will just do what Revolution did to Broken Sword, which I hear was a very overall sloppy job. The game apparently even fell to no brainer incompetence like the team not bothering to master the new audio to fit with the old audio. Besides, the first Monkey Island seems hard to actually "improve" on with any sort of special edition features. Like Thunderpeel said, the backgrounds were all done on computer. I doubt LucasArts would be putting up any money to record voices consistent with the cast from MI 3 and 4, although that would be worth my buy. They did after all pay to record all the voices to the canceled Sam and Max game with the original cast. Maybe what will happen is that puzzles will be added and talking character portraits will be put in a frame in the corner during dialogue, Sierra style, similar to what Broken Sword on Wii added? Any kind of complete overhaul seems unnecessary and expensive (for LucasArts). Last complaint is of course that none of the original team is at LucasArts is even there anymore, and as someone already said in the thread, who would be able to take charge and understand what the game would benefit from? I suppose this is all nothing though and the special edition will probably have something like a redesign interface or smoothed out pixels. Sinking your ship while on Monkey Island will be an achievement, by the way. -
I sent you junk mail. There are a few choice coupons inside. Enjoy!

Idle Thumbs 28: Other People Get It

I am up late and this is posted very early. I'm going to go to bed and try not to be late for work in a few hours, sit at my desk, and turn on this podcast. -

Fuck customers and subsequently service. -
This is my personal favorite until I think of another. This used to happen to me a lot in King's Quest 5, since I found it funny to walk Graham off a cliff whether he kept screaming or not. Name yours! Videos and pictures are most helpful, but an amazing description is nice too!

Lucas just came in and started rubbing his beard all over the screen, pleading for his name to be longer. I was there.

Does anyone in the PAL region of the world know where I can find and purchase a copy of the PAL cartridge version of Devil World for the NES, preferably with the manual? I had no idea a PAL version existed until this day. I must collect.

Darkfall NERDRAGE against Eurogamer.
syntheticgerbil replied to The Devil Tesla's topic in Video Gaming
Haha, I've noticed that. Every once and a while I'll look up something I know is terrible on metacritic just for fun, and there are usually user reviews at the bottom with a few guys saying, "Don't listen to what the critics say, this thing was great! 8/10." -
I'll have to give it another go. I didn't delve into it yet. I bought it on Ebay and was messing around, and while I played a few minigames, I somehow expected less reading.

I wish they would translate the GBA one and port it. I own the Japanese cart, but I'm really confused because I don't know Japanese.

What the hell is a "thiaf?"

I get the feeling the designers felt that they needed to turn up the realism in this game to better attract the audience this time around, as it seems people are attracted to shades of brown, grit, and beat-down sun type lighting. I'm sure the style of the original game put a lot of people off, but it's hard to say for sure. It definitely had some of the fantasy quirkiness that is readily apparent in Rayman, and while it may have been a weird marriage to the subject matter in Beyond Good and Evil, I enjoyed it. I don't see that any of that based on this footage and the earlier trailer. It seems to be trying to be more similar to Assassin's Creed. I don't think people in the US have ever liked Rayman anyway, so it's probably for the best. I'm excited though.

Geez, that guys sounds like he has just discovered the F-word and is now using it at full force. Maybe they should have played a little bit more than 3 hours though, if that is true, just to cover the ol' Eurogamer ass if anything. -
;(If anyone has an extra Psychonauts DVD with the cutscenes, I will send you money in return for it appearing in my mailbox. I can send first though. EDIT: Got one. No worries.

You could just not pay them back. It's worth a shot. Maybe even create a ruckus and you'll be off the hook. I don't know anything about the law over there.

Ah, I haven't had to deal with that. I've read some horror stories, but I don't own an Xbox 360 yet. I'm still sore from my original Xbox giving me the, "Xbox can't read" error a year into owning it. -
Idle Thumbs 27: What is Game?
syntheticgerbil replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I was going to add the answer text with game put in place of key words in my e-mail, but I figured it would have just been this long, nonsensical, misspelled thing as opposed to a short, nonsensical, misspelled thing. Either way, I have my answer! Multitask maaaaaaaaaaaan. Anyways, I'm sincerely interested in Zeno Clash now. Thanks guys, expect me to play it in 2011. Looking videos and screenshots of it, it looks like a Coktel Vision game in a way, which is great, but I don't remember adventure games looking like that being released in the late 90s, but there are still a ton of adventure games I haven't played, and generally refuse to play them these days. Although Telltale games are great and do indeed have the best collector's editions around. -

Hahaha, nice use of the "What the Heck" background there.

Sounds like you guys have nice comic shops over there. I do most of my comic shopping online at either Amazon, Mile High, or mycomicshop.com, since most of the stores here only carry the two majors, some Dark Horse, hardly any back issues, and a smattering of inconsistently stocked independent comics. There's one here called Nan's that's really great, but it's like this cramped dungeon of overstock and disorganization. Sometimes I find some really rare stuff I get the feeling no one has picked up over the years just because they didn't see it among the crammed shelves.

I found LBA 1 really hard in the beginning personally. I didn't understand why everyone had to be constantly chasing me and getting the hang of that bouncing ball was kind of obnoxious. The second one was a cakewalk though, although I feel it's lot more involved, as a lot of others, for the sense of scale, quirkiness, and gobs of adventurouis stuff you do in one game. So... how about that... Ecstatica?
-
This thread seems to be about a game called Ecstatica, but then when I clicked the first link, it showed a game called Megarace. Since I've only skimmed the text here and on the other site, I have nothing to add except that I also love Little Big Adventure. Bye now.

Hahah, I've actually seen someone do that, but I don't remember why they were doing it. That is very messy method indeed.
