No More Manuals: Desperate Struggle
syntheticgerbil replied to syntheticgerbil's topic in Video Gaming
It's more of the latter, besides the whole environmental spin, since I don't really have anything against digital releases. To me it seems weird that they would sell a boxed copy of a game with a printed cover and not bother to print a manual? It seems half assed. Why not just make the whole thing a digital release then so we don't have to use plastics as well? Also I think the PSP Go sort of had the right idea, but made a lot of mis-steps. I think the main problem is they are pitting physical copies of the same game against the digital copy. Why are they the same price? The digital copy should always be a little bit cheaper. In fact, if the game starts dropping in price, you eventually get screwed on every game for the PSP if you are looking for a digital copy, since their prices rarely drop with the market value of the boxed release. But I guess Sony also didn't bother feeding everyone some horse shit about the environment. I also don't understand why hardly any major publisher has tried very hard to put anything worthwhile in the manual the last 10 years either. I just bought the Special Edition boxed release of Machinarium and even the walkthrough the came in addition to the artbook is fully illustrated and has design document type sketches all over the place. It really makes me miss this stuff. -
Haha, I did give it a week before posting the Big Dog shirts, since as Joflar mentioned, it sort of *needed* to end up there. I would have flooded more Big Dog images, but it was getting really hard to find the shirts on a google image search since I guess the type of people who actually wear Big Dog clothes probably still run Windows 95 with their search homepage on IE4 most likely being a spyware plant that leads them to porn or Viagra upon actually attempting to search.

No More Manuals: Desperate Struggle

Yeah, I mean that's the truth since most games you just have to run through some tutorial type stuff now instead of reading a pamphlet. I even remember the manual for the PS2 version of Rayman 2 (the special edtion version) being a copy and paste job for the regular Playstation version of Rayman 2, so it had more than a few errors since whoever decided to reprint the thing didn't seem to understand the game had been revamped and changed. I just don't like Ubisoft's environmental spin on it and I think it should have to save their customers money as well. -
Roger Ebert rehashes old debate even indie hipsters are tired of
syntheticgerbil replied to Forbin's topic in Video Gaming
I'm not even sure why that game was used. It seems about as artistic and fun as the SHOOT JFK game everyone was upset about a few years ago. Also Mega Troll bonus post: Ebert would say video games were art if he were forced to play Heavy Rain chained to a chair all the way through. Lack of full interactivity and ability to lose the narrative sound like something he would love. Only catch is, he probably wouldn't love it or understand what he were doing unless David Cage were locked in the same room espousing his bullshit and talking up his game every step of the way. You wouldn't have to lock Cage in there to get him to comply though. -
Hooray, I got off my butt and put this number here finally! Syntheticgerbil's Wii number: 2274 6996 5334 1136

Roger Ebert rehashes old debate even indie hipsters are tired of

Ebert sees games much like Chris Remo's dad seeing Zelda as a maze. BRAID = SUCK, BECAUSE YOU CAN'T TAKE MOVES BACK IN CHESS! He's just a rich troll using his reputation for his platform. In all these damning diatribe's he makes against video games, I've never heard him once actually entertain the possibility that he could be wrong, even when admitting the subjective nature of it all in the same article that what one sees as fine art may not be the same to another. -
It's funny because this time around I'm seeing a lot of the characters look the exact same as their old counterparts for the most part. Too bad Guybrush and Elaine couldn't follow suit, but I guess they had to sort of go with the precedent set by the first SE.

Somebody once prank called my house with the baby noise from Mario Paint on super slow and then hung up. Best prank call I've ever received.

That's unfortunate, toblix.

I would have personally hated outlines as a shortcut to create contrast.

But that song is by a German band with a German woman singing...

At first that crazy man wasn't so funny, but I keep finding myself coming back and rewatching it.

I loathe Halo somewhat but not really for the gameplay. I'm just posting hoping you all got your extra Xbox Live content before everything shut down for good. I made the effort to sign up just to download two Warrior Within Time Attack Levels and an extra Level to Armed and Dangerous about a year ago thinking this was going to happen soon. Sucks. Hopefully someone will back up all of this stuff somewhere just in case people are curious about the defunct extra content in the future.

But tacky animated gifs are free!

If he writes books, I want the "About the author" page at the end to be his avatar.

Cool, I not going to be near my Wii until this weekend, but I'll go find my friend code. I don't know it by heart. I see if I can add you from the multiplayer thread.

So if I have Warioware Showcase for my Wii, which I bought because I had leftover money to spend, then can I see everyone's games basically?

That sounds correct... I think. Marek would probably know more for sure. -

You have the best stories! I think I have a similar one from a couple of months ago, but from what it sounds like, my cockroach wasn't near as big and it was also dead. I keep an inhaler on my nightstand since I have asthma and I have always had the bad habit of throwing away the caps since I was a child, since they are pretty useless. Well I don't do that anymore since puffing on my inhaler sucked the nested dead cockroach inside right down my throat. It was awful, I could feel it's little legs on my esophagus. I didn't completely upchuck, but I had to run to the bathroom and vomit a little in order to get it out. I was actually trying to swallow it since it seemed more ideal, but alas, my spit was not strong enough to flush it out. My girlfriend thought this was hilarious.

The Idle Thumbs Podcast Episode 5: His Cyborg Familiar

I'm well aware of his site, otherwise I couldn't call myself a fan, but where's the interview Remo conducted with him? it's certainly not on Mechner's site. I was thinking it was going to be featured on Gamasutra in transcribed form. -
I thought contrast was a big part of Monkey Island's look. It's readily apparent in many parts of the first game, but the second game it's manifested in the method of darkening out key shapes in the landscape and putting highlights or shades around the sides. I'm guessing that's more a Purcell sort of thing since he tends to use the same technique in the Sam and Max comics (especially the weirder ones) and uses it liberally in his Toy Box stories. It also probably stems from him living around Mike Mignola for a major part of his life and taking key ideas from his techniques. I can see where Thunderpeel is going, and I thought contrast was never really considered a bad thing in artwork by most, especially in a tale where darkness sets the atmosphere and helps tell what's going on. Either way, I'm not as offended as I would be if they had done something bone headed like the first SE and just typed a standard Photoshop font for the sign (like Stan's shipyard) and then to add insult over injury, not erase the white crap around the text from bad selection. And then when they are done they can make sure not to do something as simple as hide the original pixelated layers they drew over before saving out. I don't see that here, so I can rest much easier. The ugliest part is again, just Guybrush, who likes to walk around the Caribbean with a yellow tint following him everywhere he goes.
