Let's hope there isn't a bunch of cards declined! (Does this happen a lot on Kickstarter?)

GDC 2012: The Death of Nick Breckon
syntheticgerbil replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I remember I finished Grim Fandango without any cheating through the internet, except for two parts, which I think are the worst puzzles ever: - The dumb sign post in the forest - I had no idea I could move with Chepito underwater after picking him up for his lantern, there was no precedence of those types of controls before Otherwise I felt pretty fulfilled in finishing such a long adventure game without much cheating. That's more than I can say about my patience today. It was worth the two months spent. I didn't mind the wandering around figuring out what to do as all of the parts taking place within the cities were enjoyable to just meander. -
It doesn't matter because one picture shows him counterfeiting more! Joy!

The most ridiculous Prince of Persia game yet?
syntheticgerbil replied to Erkki's topic in Video Gaming
Yes, probably in a few months. I'm playing the cell phone version right now when hanging around, which is surprisingly good. Actually not so surprising, since PoP 2008 cell version was very nifty as well. Besides being kind of streamlined and easy, they are very solid and fun platformers with great animation and graphics. Most cell games I've played so far have just been complete ass, the Metal Gear Acid ones I recently finished being complete awfulness and bad execution, as well as being full of bugs. -
Unfortunately, I have worked too much on projects very similar to this one.

I know Ziggy's secret identity!

Well now that we are getting into juvenile HAY EVERYONE SUCK MY DICK comments, I guess I'll pass on Fez whenever it does come out. Oh well.

I know exactly what you are talking about, it was good, but I don't think it beats Another World, Prince of Persia, or Oddworld for example. Thing is, I don't think a lot of Limbo lovers played the older versions of the same game. I still found it enjoyable, but I actually felt it was easy, with the trial and error puzzles being very forgiving in terms of checkpoints.

Yeah, I figured as much. I should have said as far as where you can sit and watch penguins, Moody Gardens isn't anywhere near as sleazy as Sea World. I have to make a trip to watch them every time I go to Galvestion, embarassingly enough.

IDLE THUMBS: A Retrospective In Triple A
syntheticgerbil replied to Roderick's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Not jerks, just it feels like the history of the site keeps getting reexplained in multiple threads because of these loser people that have been around too long in forums for a site that had long died and became an empty shell. Well, before the podcast -
Yeah, primarily western games were on PCs in the 80s and 90s, but I feel like I had a healthy dose of everything growing up. I don't feel like there was ever some major Japan vs. western world thing until recently, except possibly in RPG differences. Yeah I don't know, it's kind of xenophobic and disappointing for the Fez guy to make the statement, but I guess it's ultimately his opinion. But personally, I think this thing where Japanese games are majorly thought of as dinosaurs in terms of design and western games are at the forefront of innovation and ideas is just garbage. For both parts of the world, I'm sure just as many useless and bad games exist in terms of percentage. Sure Japanese games have a different feel and design philosophy, just as German games or UK games do, etc. It's just the result of region and culture, no need to act like it's all bad. It also ends up a matter of preference, some people no doubt prefer one style over the other. Fez should just come out already anyway and Phil can get positive publicity.

The most ridiculous Prince of Persia game yet?
syntheticgerbil replied to Erkki's topic in Video Gaming
So I finally reached this game after playing the Prince of Persia games in mostly chronological the past few years. I also have an unlocked PoP thread to post in, yay! I only played the PS3 version for now, and I'm otherwise caught up with the series. I pretty much agree with everything Miffy said a few years ago. It was very much a throwback plus and the game was much more engaging than I thought it would be. The water powers make kind of a big difference once they come into play. All of the platforming and puzzles became about timing in addition to the usual, sometimes getting me into a frantic button press and messing it up completely. Luckily the time rewind is thankfully back. When the water freezing stuff gets intense closer to the end of the game with a long string of jumps, climbs, and swings are in your path, the game makes you feel simply awesome when you pull it off. Very satisfying. Major drawback is for whatever reason the combat was completely scaled down and stupified. The combo system started in Warrior Within is completely gone. While originally an unwelcome addition for most in Warrior Within (also being very clunky there), it had been refined all the way up to PoP2008, where the combos were very involving, easy to understand, and were simply gorgeous in terms of animation and effects. The problem with 2008's combat was the inability to use the system on multiple enemies and there were useless added quicktime events when you were near death or some special attacks. Forgotten Sands scraps all of that and adds a major amount of enemies where I initially had fun jumping on their heads and using the new magic powers, but ends up completely boring after the first few hordes. Why something more similar between a mix of 2008 and Two Thrones did not result here is beyond me. I thought it was actually going to be like that and was in for a surprise. As for the "superficial" parts of the game, the art direction is very boring and sepia tone in contrast to the two games before, the story is just uneventful, and unengaging garbage, all characters are uninteresting with instantly forgettable dialogue, and the Prince's face looks like complete ass now. The face change, I'll never understand, but I'm guessing the other factors were just the result of rushing to get the game out in time with the movie. Might explain why it's so short as well. Also, last thing: fuck Ubisoft and their stupid ass credits. This is fucking nuts now. What is wrong with this company? Why are there 500 people credited after the actual people who worked on the game from every useless mediocre to poor studio Ubisoft has opened in the last decade or so to every marketing team the studio has ever used? I suffered through this in Beyond Good and Evil HD, which had double the length of already long credits for 2003. Same thing with Rayman 2 3DS. All of the Prince of Persias leading up to this have just gotten progressively worse. What is the point of this idiocy? Forgotten Sands was a half hour of credits which I waited to end just so I could see a shitty epilogue movie at the end. God damn it Ubisoft you fucks, you are such a horrible behemoth company now. -
Sea World is a disgusting place, I feel horrible at the end of every trip there. I don't endorse this no matter how cute the penguins. I much prefer the aquarium at Moody Gardens in Galveston.

IDLE THUMBS: A Retrospective In Triple A
syntheticgerbil replied to Roderick's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Very good summary, sticky sticky! Might avoid a lot of confusion with other forum members. -
Hey what songs did Michael Land do for Sim City 4? The actual soundtrack CD does not credit him. This is what I need to know.
-
Hunting man for sport is the best thing ever.
-
You kind of do, you sit on the subwoofer to feel the extra sound.
-
As said before, the point is not to completely separate anyone into one ear or the other, I understood that from Brkl first thing. I personally think the addition of stereo makes the sound feel crisper and just more professional. You get the feeling of increased dimension. I think I'd enjoy it more as helping me stay involved while listening at work, but stereo is not something I need to distinguish who is talking at all. Also, still don't understand how adding stereo could detract from the sound in any way.
-
There's kind of a fanboy thing going on. Sigh. I don't see how it's sacrilege if some of us throw out suggestions, money or no money. I really don't feel like anything brkl said or suggested was unreasonable or unrealistic, or really even called for ridicule. How on earth does recording something in stereo ruin a whole podcast, guys?!
-
Hurry, brkl, you've gotta retract your pledge!

Hello Nick, Happy Birthday, come back!

I just do subtitles by default for most games/movies upon initial viewing. Too many times in the past has there been voice that gets drowned out by something or other or hard to understand recordings or accents, so I just do them as a safe guard so I don't miss anything. That said, I annoy everyone around me with them on for some reason.

Sorry, I was just making a bad and obscure joke referring to another thread, possibly the Deathspank one, where I said similar things and was responded with accusations of me hating Ron Gilbert.
-
Hey man, why all the Ron hate? (Or was it Tim hate?) But yeah, the dialogue part was iffy. While I can't think of a recent game with really good dialogue off the top of my head, I am pretty sure Ron Gilbert doesn't play a ton of newer games either, making his judgment a little bit harsh. Everything else, I think he's got it covered. I did say before somewhere outside of Thumbs that I was hoping this game might be more serious or wondrous in the vein of Full Throttle or Grim Fandango, much like Remo just said, but I think the Ron Gilbert factor will prevent that from happening more than just the budget. I don't recall Ron ever being involved in a game with a more serious story whatsoever. The Humongous games were all pretty silly and had moments of absurdity just as much as Deathspank and Monkey Island. Does Total Annihilation count? He has story credits but I don't really know how deep it goes.
-
But everything he says is so off the cuff but done in a hilarious and loving way. I don't think I've ever seen him do one of those long posts attacking every fucking thing that I have unfortunately been too prone to over the years (as well as a lot of other people on the internet), and are sure to get you banned. Toblix, he's good people. He also has one of those avatars now where it seems he's parodying the dorks on forums who use their actual faces in some stilted pose, except I'm nearly positive that that photo is not him. The percentage of doubt in that is magical though.
