That's true, I forgot that the main menu has the third game as the automatically selected one. I didn't like Portable Ops though. It was a boring, tedious mess that had no engaging maps or interactivity with the playfield. The storyline and cutscenes are so laughably distant between what you do in game that you are just kind of slogging for the next piece. There's hardly any codec conversations that are even related, granting you can get someone on the codec at all (you seem to have to dial people 10 times until they feel like talking to you?). So besides the normal MGS mechanics you just run around doing missions on open minimaps where you capture guards back your truck for recruiting, get to some X on the map so that a cutscene will play, or putting TNT on various objects. Besides some uninspired boss battles, it's just a game of nothing. However the cutscenes and story are great. They art is by Ashley Wood, who is very talented and responsible for the comic book series and the Peacewalker cutscenes, also done in the digital graphic novel style. I think it's worth at least watching all of the cutscenes on Youtube if you like the Metal Gear Solid 3 storyline. It follows directly after those events and branches in to the Peacewalker storyline. Besides some minor retconning done with Grey Fox that is supposedly canon, I'm not sure why people are saying it's not canon, as there's nothing drastically different or out of place in the storyline. If anything it has a few key points for establishing why Big Boss will go on to create Outer Heaven. It's not an alternate universe like Metal Gear Acid or Ghost Babel.

I definitely know that having both the M9 and FPV at your arsenal tend to make the game super simple. I didn't play the original MGS but I have played the VR Missions on Playstation all the way through and it could get very frustrating in terms of controls and telling where things were on screen. I still don't want to play the original MGS if I don't have to, even though I tend to be a version whore. In general I do my best to avoid 320x240 3D games with texture maps that float around while I move and Twin Snakes doesn't seem to have enough changed that I can justify playing the PSX one, especially when VR Missions gave me a break down of all the older mechanics. Haha I figure if he touched them now, he'd just make them even crazier. That's definitely a shame for those who bought the HD collection just finally wanting to see what the fuss about Metal Gear was all along. MGS2 is just not a good starting point, even one of the MSX games is a better starting point (assuming they know how to get there through the menu). There's just too much wackiness in the storyline in 2 and way too much tends to be overwhelming or too hard to follow for someone starting off. MGS1 is so perfectly grounded just like 3 and can be played alone without touching another Metal Gear game. I feel if someone ends up not liking Twin Snakes, even with the over the top stuff (which will be more prominent later anyway), they aren't going to like the rest of the series. I don't feel 2 is majorly representative of everything I've played so far. I haven't done 4 yet, but that's next on my list since I just finished Portable Ops this week.

Did you spell it that way on the cover letter for your resume? They may not have called you back for that reason.

I can use Dreamweaver half assed and in turn make half assed websites. That's why mine is just a collection of images that are split among tables so that I can hide my lack of knowledge. I don't really need to know though. It can't be that hard to try to do what you are doing right? In your PSD file you can set up all the slices for exporting with the slice tool. But there's much better ways of making websites than Dreamweaver, as most have said already.

Pikmin 2 multiplayer finally coming out for Wii in North America
syntheticgerbil replied to shammack's topic in Video Gaming
I was under the impression somehow that the NPC version of Pikmin 2 was going to have extra levels, but it appears google searching this that I was wrong. It would be awesome if they reinstated the e-reader interaction somehow that only the Japanese version had. I like fucking around with e-reader cards even though no one else did. I even printed out working cards of all of the unreleased Mario 3 levels. -
Not him specifically, just other people tend to gang up or get mean when Remo writes a disagreeable towards you, since they tend to be, "oh shit," type posts. His real persona on the podcast is way more hilarious, agreeable, and likeable. This is getting weird. Remo is celebrity status now, so we have to talk like we are TMZ. Forgive me.

Is Tim Schafer mocking Marek Bronstring? Is he well known outside of SEGA and Adventure Game fandom? He is a god here though. I would agree but I don't want to get banned or yelled at. Nor do I want to upset the fans. Plus it's possible I could now upset Double Fine. I get the feeling that it means they will just talk even less about Double Fine games on the podcast. I've noticed they've tended to stray away ever commenting on games their respective companies have made or released recently depending on who is hired where at the time. It's probably for the best since they might cross a line someone at their company doesn't want them to cross or fans might think they are biased towards the games. I don't know, I would like the podcast to comment on the upcoming DF adventure some, criticism and praise alike. I'm sure it'll happen to some extent, just not extreme.

Pikmin 2 multiplayer finally coming out for Wii in North America
syntheticgerbil replied to shammack's topic in Video Gaming
Ah I have the Euro version but was waiting for the Wii to get to the end of it's life cycle so that I could do the system unlock and play all region games. Buying this is much less work. Also I wonder if this will still release at the $30 price tag of the other New Play Control rereleases? -
Awesome, I'm glad you enjoyed it this time. It seems like so many people I've talked to recently quit the game within the first few hours because of the learning curve and the bare bones way you start out. I think I definitely complained about it in another thread before I finished it and things definitely changed after the first third of the game. I'm curious, you were playing Subsistence before right? The classic MGS camera doesn't work for open areas. Also I found the game got much easier as I earned better camo and the areas became even more open since I could really disappear from far away. If I did get noticed in the later parts of the game, I could usually make a run for it without getting an alert.

Haha being a Houstonite up until a year or two ago, I am inclined to agree, it is terrible. I knew that when living there though. But there are good things about Houston... like my friends and family. Yep, good ol' friends and family.

There seems to be a surprising concentration of people who live in Texas on these forums now. I realize I am not helping this either.

Sadly, out of the two, that looks like the one that will make it. I haven't pledged yet, but this is the concept I wanted. -
Alright, I'm in, what do you want me to post?!

Shit, is that really a common abbreviation for that?!

Two Guys from Andromeda (Space Quest) Reunion
syntheticgerbil replied to lobotomy42's topic in Video Gaming
The thing about Freddy Pharkas was I liked the base game: the puzzles, storyline, and characters, but so much of the dialogue and descriptions were just a rambling mess. It was definitely the Josh Mandel effect. It did not help that Sierra games at that point did not have hotspots, so you would just click around the screen trying to figure out hints, what to do, or just what the world was like and just be bombarded with a bunch of text that did not necessarily enrich the world. I guess I feel like I got way more jokes and world creating imagery out of any Lucasarts game where I had a hotspot with a few lines of dialogue nested within. Callahan's Crosstime Saloon was also one of the most agonizing adventure games I ever suffered through. The amount of text in that game is truly epic. But Josh Mandel also did pretty good writing for Insecticide, so I don't know, maybe he works well within limits? Either way, I know a lot of people love Josh Mandel and want their adventure games to have tons of dialogue or description, so I'm probably an extreme. -
Two Guys from Andromeda (Space Quest) Reunion
syntheticgerbil replied to lobotomy42's topic in Video Gaming
Maybe I worded it wrong, but Space Quest is by far my favorite series of games from Sierra. I feel sad and cynical about it because Space Quest comes last after a slew of other things where we are asked to fund blasts from the past, without even seeing one Kickstarter project finished at this point. I don't think I'm going out on a limb to say that way too many of those types of projects just based on names are announced in two months. That godawful fucked up video of boring and awkwardness did not help one bit. Also I'm upset that this game is most likely involving Replay Games, which already has got me sick over the Larry project. I would feel much better if the game was not produced by that company. See my posts in the Larry thread for more of my issues if it matters at all. I also really don't want Josh Mandel involved. I know everyone thinks he's amazing over at adventuregamers.com, but I've found his game writing to also just be an endless amount of mostly unfunny verbiage. He makes sense for a hintbook in IV but that's about it. All of the games pre Space Quest VI all have the same kind of concise humor that I enjoy about the series. That all said, I will end up funding any Space Quest game, no doubt, if you are trying to get an idea. All of my list of major concerns aside, I would still want this to happen. P.S. I'm actually a little astounded by your celebrity appearing here, Troels. I used to pour over that behemoth Space Quest FAQ numerous times and get excited with every update. -
I feel like this is just going to be a lesser version of all of the games mentioned before. The gameplay seems very on par with Prince of Persia 1 but not 2 or the SNES version. Maybe they'll add something interesting later? I guess it doesn't matter because I'm sure I'll end up playing this game anyway since it's so kin with what I like.

Two Guys from Andromeda (Space Quest) Reunion
syntheticgerbil replied to lobotomy42's topic in Video Gaming
I remember that interview all too well and I should really be much more excited about this announcement but I'm not. I figured Space Quest should stay done after the unevenness of 6 and following all of the bad Sierra lay off stories during 7. The Kickstarter adventure game rush is just making me push against caring even more. I know exactly what you are saying here, and I don't understand my own negative thoughts. Just seems like designers of games I liked as a much younger person are all getting together to make separate mistakes. It's like, most if not all Sierra designers disappeared after their sequel heavy games series were done, while most LucasArts designers have stayed active since, for better or worse. -
I love all of this and it's effect on all fans. This has reached amazing heights (or lows).
