I've added a STALKER game and gained some likelier-to-work versions of a couple of the games thanks to Laco's generosity. I played DooMTM II for a bit, but got pissed off by a pit I kept falling into and decided to try out some of the later levels using the Ultimate launcher menu. It's cool to see new enemies (even though they're recycled, I especially like the mini-spiderdemons) and the apocalyptic city setting (with imps in office windows and stuff), but I'm pretty DooMTMed out now. So it's onto: Dark Forces I've never played this and am looking forward to it. I need to remember to look into whether there are options to play a game more accurately to the way it was on release though - I'm aware that games can lose their soundtracks/scores, get updated graphics etc without it being obvious and it'd be nice to avoid those changes if possible. I'm also still at the point where I need to decide whether to use mouselook. I'm pretty confident that all pre-Quake FPSes should be played without it, at least.

I'm going to make a 'cast sampler CD as a present for my dad, as he likes listening to radio but isn't very tech savvy. Could people recommend me some stuff? He's very smart and likes comedy (though not sitcoms or sketch shows), history, science. Basically anything that isn't fiction. He likes Douglas Adams, Ben Goldacre, Charlie Brooker, Just A Minute, QI, Have I Got News For You, that sort of thing. So far, I'm planning on including the QI There's No Such Thing As A Fish 'cast and maybe a Dead Authors episode...

I assume Anita has taken those from real comments, so maybe Portal was considered too mainstream and popular by some internet hosebrain? The Lemmings pull is beyond me though.

Stealth (Bastard) Inc 2 is free on Humble right now: https://www.humblebundle.com/store/p/stealthinc2_agameofclones_freegame

Seriously though, that Anita talk is good. It's all stuff I knew but presented very well and really underlines how much logical straining gators and such go through in order to undermine her. Also: they say Lemmings isn't real gaming? What is wrong with these people?!

But enough about your avatar...

This thread only gets FOUR stars due to Jake's low audio levels. Speaking of ratings, is it possible for me to go rate Thumbs on iTunes online without getting the software or anything? Also, is that survey for advertisers still going? I don't think it ever got linked on a forum thread and there was no way I was going to remember it from listening to the 'cast until getting to a computer.

What the fuck, BadHat?

I still appreciate you highlighting the deal because I may well buy it and wait for the market to catch up and actually make it a viable proposition for me to read the book I bought.

Yeah, I know. But trying to sugar-coat it for her isn't going to help anything. You only have a certain amount of time left, you need to be direct. It may actually make for a happier ending.

pboshe - it's easy how to tell her: "I think you're great, but you're messing me around and I'm not up for that, so let's call it a day."

I'm reticent to get books from them as they don't work on Kindle and the only one I tried reading on my Android phone via the Google app had some formatting issues. Still not beating the thousands of years old medium there, e-books.

Well, Tesco have put out the Chrimbo chocolate tins (Quality Street etc). They haven't labelled them as Xmas related yet, but they're all stacked up ready. Christmas 2015 is starting to heat up! Less than 4 months of it left!

Just because they're unofficial, doesn't mean you can't put them on your CV. Big your experience up as much as possible, and when they ask about it in interview they'll know from your responses that you didn't just make it all up.

It depends if it makes a noise.

Yeah, in my experience NHS medical staff are generally good (although I've had some shitty GPs - jacks of all trades, masters of none) but waiting times are horrific.

What is there to know that these straight friends don't? (Must admit, I found out quite late in life that tampon sizes relates to heaviness of flow rather than size of vagina.)

Yeah, I also like to do that when my mind wanders while listening to a podcast.

It pisses a lot of UK (or just English?) women off that sanitary products are treated as luxury items and therefore taxed like crazy. Going back a bit (and kind of off-topic, sorry), here are some students who don't need trigger-warnings (or any help at all!) to act coddled and infantilised: http://www.avclub.com/article/duke-students-refuse-read-alison-bechdels-fun-home-224339

I've never heard "jealous" used in that way, interesting that it used to mean that.

I'm having problems getting this working properly. I'm playing from the Ultimate Doom CD, but that has some problem with the graphics going all pink/white/green. I tried Chocolate Doom but that has a horrible filtering thing going on that I can't get rid of. Unfortunately, I tried loading up Doom 1 (from my CD install) and now that's got the same graphical problems despite me having played it through only recently. No idea what's going on... EDIT: okay, a quick reset fixed it all. Not much different to Doom 1 yet - the super shotgun is nice and satisfying, and the enemies all seem to take friendly fire now, which I only saw on the Spider Demon fight with the cacodemons previously. If I get bored, I might skip forward to episode 3 so I can just see all the new enemy types straight away... EDIT 2: oh, one difference I have noticed is that the music is less speed metal now and more 70s sci-fi/horror. It's not as immediate, but it's pretty cool.
