Dammit. I spotted the set-up for that end-joke during the movie and thought it was one of the few subtle gags in the movie! Little did I know... What was wrong with the pronunciation of Hiro? I noticed that the tall skinny girl gave it a bit more of a Japanese accent. I guess you could explain away mispronunciation with the Am-Jap mash-up setting (which is underused to the point that you wouldn't know it existed if it weren't for the massive San Frantokyo sign at the start - even Hiro doesn't look vaguely half-Asian).

Scroll up to the previous post and you will find the answer you seek! I didn't like Big Hero 6. It was trying so hard for that Iron Giant vibe, but the writing just wasn't good enough. Clumsy, predictable, mawkish. What was the post-credits scene? Put it in spoiler tags!
  3. Feminism

    Wrong link?
  4. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

I like your ironic choice of the word "good"! (Also, if I hadn't been so drunk as to defy comprehension, I would have probably praised your correct use of "beg the question" )

I just watched HWAS for the first time and didn't find it funny at all (apart maybe from Paul Rudd). I can't understand how it's become a cult classic, especially to the point where it's now getting a tv show!
  6. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

Oh yeah, I had heard jokes refered to as hacky (as in trite, overused), but hadn't realised that extended out to comedians using those jokes or stealing jokes being called hacks. Found this about it. Hmm, I wonder whether people calling directors hacks mostly use it to mean they're mercenary, doing trite work, stealing stuff, or just plain bad...
  7. GOG doesn't do achievements at all, right? I'm guessing achievement-hounds will know that!
  8. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

This is the second time I've seen "hack" used here to simply mean bad. Is this becoming standardised now? Because I've always known it to mean someone who turns in mediocre work purely for the money (I'm assuming Synth is not accusing Linklater of this). Merriam Webster has it as: a : a person who works solely for mercenary reasons : hireling <party hacks> b : a writer who works on order; also : a writer who aims solely for commercial success but I have seen it defined simply as a person who does bad work. Another word losing its unique and specific meaning to become a useless synonym!
  9. Books, books, books...

Couldn't it be a first edition of that particular publication of The Iliad? Maybe it's a really nice version and that's a first edition of it from the 50s or something?
  10. ? Yeah, they're great, I watched them all when Tegan mentioned them a while back. Get A Horse is great too, although that dailymotion site is a nightmare - so many drop-down, pop-up, pre-roll and embedded audio-playing ads to fight through to actually see the video!

You're in luck - Neighbors 2 is on the way!
  12. Ha ha, of course you like it, you're Mr 100%!
  13. Sometimes. Also - I may be misunderstanding, but I find your dislike for Valve a little odd. It's because they've been so successful that they have the freedom to make mistakes now? I don't see how that would lead you to dislike them...
  14. Plug your shit

    Nice, well done!
  15. This is indeed happening in just under 12 hours from now. I should be able to make it for the chat. Come along! Apparently the special guests will include: - Tim Schafer (@TimOfLegend) - Bret Mogilefsky (@bmogilefsky) - Brandon Dillon (@Noughtceratops) - Oliver Franzke (@p1xelcoder) - More guests to be confirmed! but I don't know if all or any of those will be in this session.
  16. Games giveaway

I'd, uh, also like to express a fondness for giving away that particular game. PM me or post here. If I don't recognise you, you will be judged on the number and quality of your posts!
  17. Life

My joke didn't have the word bitch in it, but yeah it was tangentially related to it so I should have thought it through better.
  18. Life

No. I said that I did something wrong and I apologised for it.
  19. Are we allowed to say which group we belong to and why, and speak to our befuddlement at why people would be in some of the other groups?
  20. Life

I didn't say anything about sexism not being real, and I don't find your supervisor calling women bitches funny either, it was purely the coinciding choice of phrase in your post that I was making a joke about. But I hadn't considered that you'd get men detracting from your comments in a superficially similar way often enough that the differences wouldn't stop my post from adding to the shitpile, so I apologise for doing that. If you don't mind me asking, how do you respond when the men in your work environment try to detract from your comments in that way? And how is it that in your majority-female environment the men can still get away with saying all that stuff? I suspect these are pretty basic Patriarchy 101 questions, but I've just never heard from any of my female friends about such brazenly misogynistic language being used in the workplace and I find it hard to imagine anyone at a vaguely reputable company over here doing so without getting disciplined. Perhaps it's more insidious in the English workplace, or my female friends just don't want to bring it up, or you're at a crappy place and it would be different at a larger company there too...
  21. Yep, and I clarified that I was criticising the way we did that achievement, not the achievement itself. OMG NEW PAGE! HOW EMBARRASSING AND EXCITING AND UNUSUAL!
  22. Life

Yeah, I wouldn't have gone to the dog thing otherwise. I didn't need to find a way, you laid it out and paved it with gold!
  23. I was counting fun as a reward, one which we didn't get. It was an example of someone getting an achievement for its own sake, without enjoying doing it or gaining any material benefit. As others have said, achievements can be fun, it's people doing them when they're not that I don't understand.
