  1. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

Sorry to DEEP DIVE on this in the Star Wars thread, but what immediately leapt to mind for me when reading this is the tank battle in Last Crusade. That sequence is so long and yet perfectly sustained, moving from action to comedy to pathos and back to action again. It's got to qualify for one of the best action scenes ever.
  2. Idle thumbs london meetup 2012!

If you're scared by white middle-class people in black t-shirts listening to AC/DC then sure!
  3. Movie/TV recommendations

Hmmm, is that more than what Birdman is about?
  4. Idle thumbs london meetup 2012!

I don't have a London gaff, we're just visiting (I'm on the Idle Thumbs Map and everything). It's very last minute, so we've invited everyone we know in London. For all we know, no one will show up and we'll sit in a pub on our own for a few hours then trundle off back to Cambridge!
  5. Movie/TV recommendations

    What's it about?
  6. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

He didn't change what the Force is, though, right? He just introduced the idea of microscopic organisms who communicate between us and the Force. Midichlorians aren't the Force.
  7. Idle thumbs london meetup 2012!

I do, but I couldn't make it! WHY AREN'T YOU IN LONDON EVERY WEEKEND JUST IN CASE?
  8. Idle thumbs london meetup 2012!

Alice and I still haven't gone through with that bet yet... So, my girlfriend and I will both be at the Big Red in Holloway on Saturday afternoon/early evening and are inviting all London peeps to drop in. Come see us!
  9. Life

So that's why you posted all those nude selfies?
  10. Help me remember that movie/book/thing

That thread's in the Episodes board, isn't it? What you should have done was asked in the Do We Have This Thread thread whether we had that thread and then once you were directed to that Help Me Remember Which Episode thread posted in that thread asking for help remembering an episode.
  11. Feminism

Fuck, that's rough. Thanks for sharing, it's very interesting. And congrats on the engagement!
  12. Twine Recommendations

I think you're definitely making the right call there!
  13. Happy Birthday!

    More like Senior Mints, lol.
  14. Social Justice

Incidentally, Sacco was corporate relations, not public relations.
  15. I don't know Rogue Legacy, but it definitely leans towards the former. Everything is procedurally generated, but if you die then you get given a new thief and a new property (if you manage to get out safely, you stay with the same thief but go to a new property). However, the thieves are just dressing (apart from a smattering of XP bonus cash if you keep them alive for long enough), as you get to keep all your augments, so it's not hardcore roguelike. The conceit is you've got a certain amount of heists to raise a certain amount of money, so you have to balance nicking enough each time to hit your overall goal with the risk of getting caught.
  16. Twine Recommendations

What, these kids don't like satire?
  17. Twine Recommendations

My light and airy Twine game is perfect for 10-14 year olds (with a tolerance for insta-death and Magnum pi references)!
  18. Ahhh, I wasn't aware of that! I knew regardless that you didn't mean it nastily, toblix, but when half this thread is taken up about jokes that other stealth and/or heist games exist, plus the most recent comment on the console release video is "looks like a shit Monaco", I get a little defensive even though it's not my game! Sorry if I was snappy
  19. Social Justice

I agree with that article about the term "offensive" but I don't think it condemns call-out culture as a whole, more what is being called out and how. As the final sentence says, "let us retire 'that’s offensive' from our discourse and start saying what we mean". If the only problem with GamerGate was that they were telling people "I find what you said offensive" instead of clearly delineating the issues they have with it, a lot of people's lives would much happier. The NY Times article reminds me of the time a bunch of fucking morons drove a paediatrician out of her home because they confused her job title with the word paedophile. I think these extreme cases should be taken as an illustration of how social media and call-out culture can be twisted into a bullying or mobbing tool, rather than be seen as discrediting either of those two things entirely. I hope at least some of those companies get sued for unfair dismissal so they learn their lesson; it's a shame the only repercussion for the writer who reported on and subsequently hounded Sacco was making an apology a year later, with the attitude that "she'll be fine eventually, if not already".
  20. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Mangela - to clarify, the point being made was that the likelihood of swatting someone is low enough that the swatter could say in court that they didn't expect or intend any death to occur.
  21. Let's think of one! The most obvious is nostalquel, but that's pretty awful.
  22. Idle Workouts

I've lost just over 10kg in 5 weeks, and my nipples are crazy sensitive to the cold now.
  23. Yes yes, some games are similar in some ways to other games. If only Dan hadn't retooled and cancelled The Swindle so many times he might have beaten Monaco to release!
  24. I won't bother putting this in the Didactic Thumbs thread, but "soft reboot" strikes me as one of those pointless terms that sites like io9 uses to give themselves more to talk about. They're just sequels!
  25. Just got announced for simultaneous (as much as possible) release on XBox, PS and WiiU as well as PC. I've been playtesting a con demo version of this and despite me not being massively into this type of game or very good at it, I really enjoyed it and can't wait to play the full version!
