I didn't realise Mysterious Skin was a novel first! Have you seen the film? JGL is great in it.

Do your pupils ever bump into you over summer and get all, "Woah, Mr Miffy, you're, like... totally badass!"

That sucks, SAM. You may not want to discuss the nitty-gritty of all this, and this is probably the least of all your problems, but that negative performance review sounds like the result of shitty line management. Is there no way you can argue against that? I know you're super-busy already, but that shit stays on your employment record. You should at least have it on paper that you disagree with it...

Concept art from a new (presumably cancelled) ALIEN film

Okay, now he's said that he doesn't want "to undo 3 and Resuurection", just stay close spiritually to the first two. So it's unclear what he's going to do... -
Idle Thumbs 199: Bogost in the Shell

I was ordering a round in a pub a while back and it came to six quid. Another barman piped up "sorry, we don't take fish!" It transpired he was doing a crap "six squid" joke (which presumably he does every single time someone says "six quid"). He disparaged me and my barman for not understanding, to which I was able, thanks to having read the Sam And Max comics a million times, to respond that I only didn't get it because squid are cephalopods. That shut him up. I went in six months later, and presumably he didn't recognise me because he did the joke again at one point but updated with the correct classification. -

Yessss, head-canon vindicated. Really hope it starts with Ripley waking up from a bad hypersleep dream looking confused and disappointed. -
The furnace moment in Toy Story 3 was one of the main reasons I disliked that film. It's so tonally inconsistent with what the TS films have generally been up til then, it sticks out as badly as that awful song in the second movie.

I won't be there, but Dan will be there pimping The Swindle.
-
Nope, it's fine for me.
-
Well yeah, but then you can't so you follow the big red clue to the more convoluted way of doing it. Adventure games!

Yeah, I think the last thing he did otherwise was some Filler Bunny compilation?

(a-woo-)Oooh, new DuckTales in 2017!

Is there a language that already has non-gendered single pronouns which would map well? I always thought it might seem less sci-fi/made-up/whatever else if there were and we used those.

Oooh, Jhonen Vasquez is going to start doing Invader Zim comics! I love Vasquez, but I felt his style translated a little too shoutily in that show for me to enjoy it as much as I wanted to, so this is the perfect news for me.

After pumping irony, Danielle likes nothing better than throwing punches, getting her opponents in joke holds or just forcing them to chase her round the ring to see if satires them out.

Sorry to necro-disagree, but I just saw Jennegatron's post about this issue in an episode thread and also recently played through year one again. I think the motivation for the server-room puzzle is set up well: I do think that there are problems with the puzzles elsewhere, though. Especially where you pretty much only figure it out because you're only given access to a handful of objects and end up doing what makes most sense with those objects without knowing what the outcome is supposed to be.

You mean replacing the first letter with a "z"? No, that's not what's happening. It's a bit confusing because "zir" seems to map phonetically to "her" rather than "his", but actually it stands alone from either (or represents both). "Ze" works better" because it rhymes with both, although I suppose one could see it as mapping closer either closer to "he" because it only has two letters or "she" because the z sounds similar to the z, but again it's intended to be an alternative to or umbrella term for both.

OMG NEW PAGE! HOW EMBARRASSING AND EXCITING AND UNUSUAL!

Yeah, I shouldn't have translated it as "men should never", that's not what's being said. Still, perhaps I just have a weird mental block here, and everything else in the article made perfect sense to me, but even as a broad guideline it seems rather extreme. It strikes me as I type, that I'm including replies in this rule about @ing someone and that's probably not intended; rather, it's about unsolicited remarks, in which case it makes a lot more sense to me.
-
Yeah, like I say, nuance elsewhere, but if the author doesn't intend the rule of thumb (which boils down to 'never' at least for me because there's nothing outside of "there's a bomb on the bus" that I would consider interesting enough to ask a stranger to remove their earbuds for) to be adhered to, why write it?
-
This doesn't make me mad, but is the advice really that men should never talk directly to women they don't know on Twitter? The article adds nuance and reasoning to this elsewhere but it still seems like a super strict rule of thumb...

Sorry to DEEP DIVE on this in the Star Wars thread, but what immediately leapt to mind for me when reading this is the tank battle in Last Crusade. That sequence is so long and yet perfectly sustained, moving from action to comedy to pathos and back to action again. It's got to qualify for one of the best action scenes ever.

If you're scared by white middle-class people in black t-shirts listening to AC/DC then sure!

Hmmm, is that more than what Birdman is about?
