I tried the first few eps and didn't really get into it. I think the main problem was that it's (at least for those opening eps) a large ensemble full of barely-drawn, interchangeable characters. I feel like it should have started just focusing on Samberg and Braugher and gradually expanding out. It feels like a similar problem to Futurama where characters like Amy and Hermes were essentially placeholders with the hope that at some point they would gain depth and running jokes of their own.

I've bought the first five seasons on DVD and am slowly watching them through, seeing a lot of eps for the first time in a decade. I definitely agree with my comment above - other similar little moments include Bart laughing at a farty ketchup bottle or telling his dad to get out of the way of the telly and Homer resignedly muttering, "shut up, boy". And as the person I was replying to pointed out, there's a lot more sincere drama in it. I was almost tearing up at the blowfish ep. I can totally see what synth means about the animation looseness and filmic style too - stuff like fisheye lensing or high/low angles, and stylised dream sequences or moments - like the wonderful momentary shift to pink background and use of single-frame jump-cuts when Marge enters detention in The Way We Was, or the great choreography of the 'kids playing outside' sequence from Marge And Itchy And Scratchy - give it a much more artistic feel than later seasons. Perhaps that stuff is still around post-season 9, though, and I'm just wearing poop-tinted glasses. Synth, do you have a link to those Brad Bird style guides you mentioned ages ago? EDIT: heh, we were saying the same stuff nine years ago!

I asked for alternatives to "guys" here previously, and the general consensus was "folks" works best. I like the justification for using "douchebag"! Think I'll stick with "arsehole", though.

I finally got to play an Oculus Rift last night! It was only a Dev Kit 1, and I only played a walking simulator and some mine-cart rides, but it was bloody fantastic. It really needs motion controllers rather than kb/m which is what I was using, but otherwise I'm completely sold. Would love to write an adventure game for one of these things!

I do find "silly" annoying as it's sometimes used on this forum ("saying that/thinking that way is silly") because it feels patronising and vague, but I'm re-evaluating that a bit now seeing that it's possibly an effort to stay away from offensive terms. As for douche(bag), I was just thinking the other day about how it's strange that despite being a vagina-related insult, it gets a pass as an insult where, say "pussy" or "cunt" don't.

The sidequests won't be because there's so much uncleared content in there. There's a thread on the forums where they're asking people what they'd like to be on there, so I guess it's not all nailed down yet.

Goddammit, I was so close to firsting this without even trying. The new music is amazing. Is it me or does it have a major Radiohead vibe? Wonder how the vocals will be. Happy 200, Thumbs!

The Broken Age documentary episodes are now getting released for free, weekly on YouTube. Or you can pay $10 to get them all at once, in 1080p with all the extras, which I highly recommend. Either way, the doc is fantastic (although rather spoilery if you haven't played the game yet).

Which of these is a tone argument? All, some or none of them? I don't like it when X says "gators are abusive misogynistic fucking arseholes" because it's so uncivil. I don't like it when X says "gators are abusive misogynistic basement-dwelling nerds" because nerd jokes are shitty. I don't like it when X says "gators are abusive misogynistic psychos" because it's ableist. And is there an element of subjectivity to this where your answer depends on your perception of X and their motives?

Cool. Seems like only the Carpenter one is on YT, but I enjoyed it. It seems that Rodriguez might need to stick to charismatic directors, though, as he has a pretty laid-back interviewing style. Maybe he was idolstruck...
