  1. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

Oops, sorry for the confusion, everyone! I got it right when I tweeted it but then got super-muddled here, for some reason. I'm guessing the Wookiepedia entry about breasts discusses Carrie Fisher's being taped down in ep IV so as to lessen any sexuality on the tone of the movie (and its universe)?
  2. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

etc. For this meaning, it's spelt (or 'spelled') canon.
  3. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

    It's a spin-off, it won't be Episode VIII...
  4. I Had A Random Thought...

    No, must be 4 hours.
  5. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

Oh, neat! So, it's been confirmed that Ep VII: The Force Awakens will be written/directed by Rian Johnson, and that it will be out 26th May 2017. Also, the spin-off movie directed by Gareth Edwards will be called Rogue One, which I think is pretty cool even if it does sound like a video game. EDIT: what an idiot, I mean that untitled Ep VIII will be by Johnson, out on 26/5/17, as corrected by many people below!
  6. I said last week that the theme felt Radiohead-y to me. This week it felt Hitchhiker's Guide-y. Hooray! Jake, how are you not able to quote Full Throttle verbatim in its entirety? The bit where Mo shows off the fixed bike goes: "Am I cool or what?" "You're amazing."
  7. I Had A Random Thought...

Play the games, then perhaps you can debate which insults suit them better
  8. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

Is this one of those things that Lucas says he had planned from the start and everyone else is highly sceptical about?
  9. I Had A Random Thought...

    Sexy Moronic Bumblers
  10. Movie/TV recommendations

I just watched Maleficent, having heard from Bjorn and many other places that it has some interesting stuff going on. And, like Snow White And The Huntsman, it touches on certain feminist themes but unfortunately is too shallow and messy a film to do anything with them. It reminded me more than anything of the Star Wars prequels.
  11. Twitter :)

I realised the other day that I'd previously blocked someone, and I had no idea why. They weren't gg-affiliated or anything, and I didn't even recognise them. I wonder whether they were going on about football for an entire month or something, so I blocked them with the intention to unblock later (I wasn't aware of mute until recently). Either that or I clicked it by mistake...
  12. Farscape

Just watched S01E17 (Through The Looking Glass or something), it was pretty cool. I think I said this about Star Trek TOS as well, but a lot of these could really do with being half an hour...
  13. This is no way to get up to 1402 posts, SBM.
  14. A Song Of Ice And Fire

Phew, just finished the third book. I'm surprised at how most of the tv series' plot strands haven't got any further than this. I don't see that there'll be much necessity for them to get into Book 6 stuff before it's published, assuming that happens before season 5 arrives (and even then they might be safe considering how big the books get). The only issue is SUPER-MILD SPOILERS strands like Bran and Sansa that don't go much further in books 4 and 5 but the show will want to progress somehow (unless they just leave them alone for a season or two, but that doesn't seem ideal, especially considering the aging of the young actors).
  15. The Walking Dead

    Cool, thanks.
  16. IDLE THUMBS 200

Well, it's an adaptation of a novel which had previously been adapted into a play and several films.
  17. Feminism

He's going to analyze the links you gave him! Sounds like a win!
  18. Plug your shit

Yes please, bring me a copy to buy when you're here picking up your NOLFs!
  19. EGX Rezzed: March 2015

Dan will be there showing The Swindle and doing a Dev Talk (I think 3pm Friday but I'm not sure).
  20. Movie/TV recommendations

Oh, cool, maybe I'll skip forward a bit...
  21. Movie/TV recommendations

I tried the first few eps and didn't really get into it. I think the main problem was that it's (at least for those opening eps) a large ensemble full of barely-drawn, interchangeable characters. I feel like it should have started just focusing on Samberg and Braugher and gradually expanding out. It feels like a similar problem to Futurama where characters like Amy and Hermes were essentially placeholders with the hope that at some point they would gain depth and running jokes of their own.
  22. The Big VR Thread

    Oh, definitely first-person.
  23. What is the Nadir of the Simpsons?

I've bought the first five seasons on DVD and am slowly watching them through, seeing a lot of eps for the first time in a decade. I definitely agree with my comment above - other similar little moments include Bart laughing at a farty ketchup bottle or telling his dad to get out of the way of the telly and Homer resignedly muttering, "shut up, boy". And as the person I was replying to pointed out, there's a lot more sincere drama in it. I was almost tearing up at the blowfish ep. I can totally see what synth means about the animation looseness and filmic style too - stuff like fisheye lensing or high/low angles, and stylised dream sequences or moments - like the wonderful momentary shift to pink background and use of single-frame jump-cuts when Marge enters detention in The Way We Was, or the great choreography of the 'kids playing outside' sequence from Marge And Itchy And Scratchy - give it a much more artistic feel than later seasons. Perhaps that stuff is still around post-season 9, though, and I'm just wearing poop-tinted glasses. Synth, do you have a link to those Brad Bird style guides you mentioned ages ago? EDIT: heh, we were saying the same stuff nine years ago!
