  1. Oblivion

Well, at the moment I think far more fondly of Morrowind than Oblivion. Morrowind has more depth to dig into, and Oblivion suffers from some very strange choices of design. I think the biggest mishap is that unlike other RPG's, you start out really powerful, but as the game progresses and you level up, you get weaker and weaker, because the enemy goes up in strength as well, exponentially so. This kind of destroys the whole thing why I am so in love with RPG's in the first place; namely that I can become an all-powerful godlike hero. And as such, I really don't have any incentive to level up, or even invest much time into my character. Why should I, he's only getting weaker and weaker with every level I gain
  2. Oblivion

I'm playing it with very low settings on my PC, and I silently wished I could play it in full glory. I usually don't care much for graphics, but in Oblivion's case it really is such a part of the game, that the absence of gorgeous vistas hurts the experience.
  3. Guitar Hero shortages in Europe

I decide to seize this topic to tell you I'm no longer a stranger in the land of Guitar Hero! That is to say, I had a gaming evening with the staff of [N]Gamer and we played some. It was pretty fun, though difficult at first if you just jump in. Does anyone else think the iffy cheesiness of the tutorial voice-over is deliberately tailored to make casual non-gamers who play this feel more at ease; by making it possible for them to laugh a bit at it?
  4. Beyond Good and Evil - stuck and up the creek.

Well, it obviously paid off to be very attentative to animals when playing the current areas, but that's not helping you now. I don't know the exact situation by heart, so I wouldn't know if it can be done. I can say that there's little reward when you have all the critters on film, apart from the satisfaction of accomplishment.
  5. Headsmiley poll, round four!

I feel awful voting for my own smily, but David Brent is a classic Idle Thumbs is incomplete without.
  6. Headsmiley poll, round three!

Even though the actual smily is a bit bland, Jack Black is my choice here.
  7. Just how awesome is the DS Lite?

My mom's just now making a beautiful and customized 'clunky' DS pouch for me. Surely I don't want her to make a new one for the Lite already in a few months?
  8. The Neo Double Games

It might have been a novelty thing to have, but it's just, just TOO crappy.
  9. Anyone Remember Desperados?

I reviewed Desperados for a Dutch magazine when it came out, but the magazine went bust before it appeared. However, I gave it an 8.5 because I too thought it was absolutely great. Especially the atmosphere just really elevated it above being 'just' a really sharp Commandos clone. I also played Robin Hood, but lost interest fairly quick. It tried some more non-linearity, but that really only made it feel more generic in every way. And the enhanced options to choose for an action-oriented play really only served to make your playing style sloppy and unprepared. So there you have it, kids, more options and more freedom isn't always the best thing!
  10. BS4....Hmmm

No! You can't put it in rules!
  11. BS4....Hmmm

Well, all three points are excellent in describing the adventure genre, but everything may be overruled by that one aspect that you can't grasp in rules: the feeling. To me, an adventuregame is one because it feels like one.
  12. BS4....Hmmm

I believe you can also say par se? Meh, I get confused with those things. Trifle matters.
  13. What Jake will look like when he's 40

King, that looks like a young Ron Jeremy.
  14. Magazines

I'm not subscribed to anything -save for the two magazines I actually work for, Dutch Nintendo mag [N]Gamer and Dutch Japanese culture mag Aniway. I'd like one on Edge, but it's fricking expensive and I can borrow it from the school's library.
  15. Okay, that puts it in perspective some more. I thought it was from Nintendo, obviously. Phew! I'm glad it was just good ole' irony. Still, I'll spread my disapproval in any which way I like
  16. You watched that trailer? And that bit where the guy on the couch seemingly starts maniacally stabbing some woman? His girlfriend tries to stop him but he pushes her away and proceeds with his act of butchering some female begging for mercy? And I should be totally OK with this? It was a repulsive act of violence as entertainment. Despicable. Those bullet points sure sound like great examples of what that interface can DO for the playing experience, Marek.
  17. I'm a little concerned with that Revolution trailer that is going around the web: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zI7Ow5auJvM&search=revolution%20trailer%20b. Kinda needlessly violent. Why would Nintendo go to such an extreme corner? This is way beyond what I'd deem appropriate for any company or thing. This is just the promotion of peerless violence.
  18. BS4....Hmmm

    It's uniqueness is inspiring.
  19. BS4....Hmmm

I won't claim that I don't like 3D persé of course, but since I have such love for 2D animation, it's hard for me to accept and love a transition from that style to 3D. Especially since 3D has to be exceptionally good to be charismatic, whereas even a bit clumsy and off 2D animation can already be sympathetic and charming.
  20. BS4....Hmmm

Actually, I'd buy the game instantly if it were 2D point 'n click in the same graphical cartoon style as the first two games. Now it's the same as with The Sleeping Dragon: I couldn't care less. Really, 3D somehow makes everything so generic and uninteresting (even cheap) for me that it's starting to frighten me. It's completely personal, and I don't have a clue why. Maybe it's a subconscious reaction to a game's shift to 3D because I'm hugely biased towards traditional 2D animation?
  21. favorite tv shows

Actually no. I still wish to do so: Black Books is highly amusing and occasionally brilliant. I just watched a few episodes of its creator's next series "The IT Crowd" (that name alone makes it almost a must-see for the people here), about a bunch of IT-nerds in a company. It's a familiar premise and a familiar composition of characters, but it seems to hit the right nerves yet again. Very fun, very sitcom, but again highly amusing.
  22. RTS as you've always wanted to play it

I think that with something like Warcraft, you'll play it now and then for the novelty way of commanding an army. But I estimate you'll return to the mouse soon enough and just use this to spice up your gamelife.
  23. RTS as you've always wanted to play it

AMAZING! This truly bring a new meaning to the word STRATEGY game. I can't wait to try this stuff. I love this new wave of touch screen technology that is popping up everywhere. With a bit of streamlining it could be a whole new way of experiencing games. Astounding.
  24. Why are developers held hostage by PR?

Whenever I send a freelance article off to the offices, I never see or hear anything of it again until it's published, with additions and corrections and all. I guess it'd just take too much time to send stuff back and forth until it's perfect. It is the editor's job to make those decisions, whether one likes it or not.
