  1. Movie/TV recommendations

A bit of digging yielded this: http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2011/03/15/johnny-depp-still-gonzo-for-hunter-s-thompson-hes-part-of-me/ Depp DID do the Raoul Duke / Hunter S. Thompson voice. Which to me sounded nothing like the Duke from Fear & Loathing, but since there's only the one exclamation it might take repeated viewings to appreciate (I'm liable to visit Rango in theatres a third time, I liked it a lot). The Who Am I plotline was very awesome, but got a little snowed under at the end, as did the whole 'he's gonna die' thread. I guess they had to make some concessions toward making a movie at least partially child-friendly. Honestly, I'm already super pleased that the movie strikes the Fear & Loathing / Once Upon A Time tone throughout roughly half of it. It's a great thing.
  2. New people: Read this, say hi.

Hi Feste, you probably can't go wrong with Three Moves Ahead as a (PC) strategy podcast. Featuring the occasional Balls Remo*. * Concurrently, Remo Balls.

When I went the second time I still couldn't tell! My guess is no though, they might have put in this joke only during the animation process, when the voices had already been recorded and Depp might have been unavailable? I don't know. Hollywood works weird sometimes. Suffice it to say it's a great gag.
  4. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Stop it you guys, you're making me want to play this.
  5. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

I think it's time for Sexy Sax Man again!
  6. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

So what you're basically saying is that Chris has huge balls.

I saw Big Mommas: Like Father Like Son (don't ask). I give it one out of ten Mrs. Doubtfires.
  8. Japan

If I felt inclined to donate a small bit to Japan, where would I do that so it would help the most? Red cross? Médicins Sans Frontières?

We don't want no stinking fascist Marxists here. Fucking Marxists!! USA USA
  10. Japan

I took the events in Japan as a good moment to practice the Japanese I've been diligently studying since January by sending an e-mail to some Japanese friends of the family who live north of Tokyo. It was a short mail, probably filled with errors and simplistic sentences, but it took some effort and was a fine and fun challenge. Now I just hope I haven't insulted anyone by accident!

Love the glove. And fuck me, Hobo Lobo is getting good.

  13. The threat of Big Dog

    WHY IS THIS HAPPENING
  14. The Whispered World - 23 April

I have no idea who worked on The Whispered World, at the time it was only Marco. And I'd figure not a lot of people from BB 'moved' to Deadelic, since it was only ever Wolfgang who worked in the company, plus a genial fellow called Harry, and me the intern at the time
  15. The Whispered World - 23 April

Pfooo, I wouldn't know! Though I am the original Bad Brain Intern, I haven't really been involved with them since, like... 2006? Point being: I have no idea. I do know that I liked the original artwork better for the game, but for some reason the protagonist was changed from a cool imp being to a more human clown one. It's still beyond all coolness that the game got made and was released, seeing how it was such a struggle. Props to them!

I went to Rango a second time this evening, and it gets even better with a repeat viewing. It's such a bold movie, seeing how expensive and rare 3D animated films are. Usually they are designed by committee and follow a painfully predetermined formula. Rango does occassionally lapse into predictability, but has a lot of inspired moments, especially when it dares to deviate from what is expected. This is no children's film. It's highly rewarding to see (again)
  17. V The Elder Scrolls

Ironically, Morrowind did a lot more stuff with weather if memory serves. I clearly recall walking around in a rainstorm, or getting lost in various dustbowls. A good Skyrim thunderstorm would be the rad.
  18. Books, books, books...

Well, then not I suppose! Finally, a use for this one:

  20. Hawken, or: Fuck Me, Mech Games Are BACK!

    I read 'HAWKMEN' are back!
  21. V The Elder Scrolls

It has occurred to me these last few days that Morrowind is a game that would not be made nowadays. It would be way too off course for any mainstream production. Just the fact that it takes place on an island swept by dust storms, inhabited almost exclusively by darkskinned elves instead of white humans, is enough for it never to be greenlit, or honestly deemed too risky. It makes me all the more grateful that it does exist, because it's perhaps the weirdest, most outlandish thing ever, this inscrutibly arcane, bottomless, super hard to get into, uninviting but insanely rewarding, crits you with walls of text and little spoken dialogue, deeply politically and culturally laden game.
  22. I must confess that the lack of Far Cry 2 in this follow-up was appalling.
  23. Books, books, books...

The Selfish Gene did that for me, on I do believe the same topic
