  1. Toonstruck... 2?!

Oh, that's right, I am / used to be called, Flux over there. I haven't visited the AG forums in years. It's probably still fun! You know, I have no idea if I'd have the patience nowadays to invest in a classic adventure like Toonstruck. Maybe, because it's Toonstruck. Yeah, probably. But I wonder how high or low my threshold is currently for this gameplay.
  2. Obligatory comical YouTube thread

Voxels have come a long way since Outcast!
  3. Feminism

If ever I saw one...! But to jump back into the thread: peadophiles =/= rapists, though it is a terrible affliction that I have no easy answer for how to at upon (or not act upon). I can easily understand if people have the view that they are 'ticking time bombs', because there are few emotions so strong and irrational as suppressed love/desire. Affirmitive action I am against in principle, but for in practice. It makes me sad and sometimes frustrated that it's there, just for the fact that we apparently need it. Not just for women, but also minorities. I hate its necessity. I startled when reading about the pendejo game. I never even considered that such a thing might be used as a horrible trap. As a curious person I am constantly asking people to explain their views, but the thought never entered my mind to lead them in circles. Now that I know this exists, I suddenly see patterns in some people around me who do seem to use this tactic to win discussions by hyperfocusing on terminology and the smallest of details to create a stalemate or pull the rug from under the greater point. It should come as no surprise I hate those discussions passionately. But how to arm oneself against it?
  4. Feminism

Custer's Revenge -- the quintessential tale of two star-cross'd lovers, ripped apart by an unjust society. A confederate general and an indian woman, ripped apart by Custer's RAGING BONER.
  5. Feminism

Heh, I must confess that I don't know who that is! I started this topic to tackle the spilling in the comical pictures thread, and feminism may be comical, but it's just not a picture.

Custer's Revenge is a story about a love that dare not speak its name. You heard it here first.
  7. Movie/TV recommendations

Saw Takashi Miike's 13 Assassins remake. I am in agreement with this movie. Though I'm not 100% sold on the fusion on display of the historic samurai epic with Miike's home-genre of postmodern splatter cinema, it worked fine here (though I didn't necessarily need to see the , for my tastes). The climactic battle was gratifying, but, as it SHOULD be, the final duel was the best. It felt lethal, dangerous, real. No tricks, no special stunts, just swordmasters against each other. So good.
  8. anime

Notttt really anime, but a live-action adaptation of an anime/manga: yesterday I saw the Space Battleship Yamato film from last year. It was entertaining, but a bit of a mess too. It had major problems. A shame to see, since the whole thing reeked of potential. It could have easily been Japan's answer to BSG, but it never became more than a washed-down version of (what I can only assume was) the original story of the manga.

Fantastic song, and she has a really nice voice, reminiscent of classic Hollywood movie ladies. It has a languor, a softness to it you don't hear very often
  10. Happy Birthday!

    Gefeliciteerd, jij nep-Spanjaard!
  11. Nintendo 3DS

If they throw in Minish Cap as a neat surprise I am going to spazz out.

It's hard to predict where this game will go. In any case, I've solved my initial dilemma by borrowing the PS3 from a friend and importing the game. It should come in next week. Before that time, spoil and I shall murder you!

The Norway weatherman is funny, but the Netherlands have something more depressing. Our weather report looks like this: No joke! This is Piet Paulusma, a commercial netwerk weatherman very popular here. He has managed to make the weather report into a cultural festival filled with slice of life stories and capped off with his trademark catchphrase 'Oant moarn', which is Frysian for 'See you tomorrow, fuckers!'. Every day he's somewhere else in the country reporting the weather, possibly surrounded by clowns, and then there's a group of school children (or adults with the mental capacity of school children) who all shout 'oant moarn!' along with him. I need to clarify that this is not a children's weather report, this is an actual adult weather report for grown-ups.

Air travel can suck, but depending on the airline you can purchase, for an additional fee, economy plus seats that are 100% better than the normal economy seats*. I am seriously never making an intercontinental flight again without going for that option. There's more room, less people around, and the people who are there all paid extra to have a pleasant fucking flight so there's no bullshit with crying babies and faux-pas passengers. To me, that's worth an extra 120 Euros. (* This is based on the excellent KLM/Air France airline)
  18. I'm sure they had a framework in mind, but the as-they-go aspect clearly shows in how character arcs spin wildly out of control (Baltar) or events that are set up as incredibly important (the opera scene) are forgotten as the show progresses. B5 would never have allowed such a thing to happen.

Series like this should take a big leaf out of J. Michael Straczynski's book*. When he created the seminal Babylon 5 he had the whole thing, five seasons long, thought out. And it shows. Minor events in the first season suddenly have great significance in the last, and not in a tacky retconning way, but in a really smart foreshadowing way. The character arcs and event arcs in B5 make so much sense, they are so complete... 'making it up as they go'-shows like BSG, no matter how extraordinary it was, can't touch that. (* Before Straczynski took a big, long poop over his creation with that recent last B5 movie. It was embarrassing to see him sink so far, it was like a different, much lesser person had written it as fanfiction.)

Thanks for the encouragement, fine Thumbs I have just sent in the application letter + resume. As the religious Dutch fishermen of yore would exclaim before trying to tackle a codfish: god zegene de greep! (god bless [my] grip!) If all works out, Scrobbs, I'll be happy to eat some sushi with you and your sparkling new wife

That's hard to say! Not a major regret, since I know there'll be other opportunities that will probably involve equal amounts of risk. It's really not the risk I'm worried about. Right now I'm thinking of applying and seeing where it can take me. I can always say no if everything turns out to be impossible.

Well shit, now I have to go.

I've been mulling over a job posting for the position of librarian in an exclusive English-speaking club in Japan (The Tokyo American Club -it's the highest of brows). I'm so tempted to do it, since it seems the best way to get into a job situation in that country --and it's work that I will probably really like, even if it's not something I'm schooled in. The biggest downside is the insane risk I'd be taking of course. It would mean giving up everything here and going on a crazy (and AWESOME) journey to the other side of the world. Now I have some precedence in doing that sort of thing (the Hollywood internship two years ago), but this would be an order of magnitude more serious, longer and even more 'definite'. Scary stuff!
  25. Deadly Premonition

I just watched the final few episodes of the endurance run and have to say: I'm glad that I saw it, but soooo glad I didn't have to play through all of that! My brief experience with the first few chapters of the game were more than enough of that gameplay for me. I do appreciate that it's weird and unique, though I wouldn't dare to say how much of the story is really good and how much is thrown-together bullshit. I am glad that this exists.
