  1. Movie/TV recommendations

I just viewed in the Pathé cinema the Turkish historical epic Fetih 1453. It's a siege movie, not unlike The Two Towers, about the fall of Constantinople at the hands of Ottoman empire. I'm always interested in non-Hollywood movies, so seeing a lovingly made epic like this was great. It's a three hour war filled with politics and intrigue. Sometimes it's a little rough around the edges storywise, at other times it's so much more gratifying than anything Hollywood has produced in the field over the last ten years. Since this film might easily slip under everyone's radar (how many cinemas will be willing to show a Turkish film?), I want to give this a little boost. Go check it out if you're into battering rams and historical politics. It's also not as propagandistic as the trailer might lead you to believe. oTXljiwsKSc Added video game bonus: at times it feels right out of Assassin's Creed.

Not quite done yet, but very far into Pushmo / Pullblox. Fun new Nintendo game! It takes a while to get challenging, but it's highly enjoyable all throughout! I wonder how much lasting power it has though. Even though after 180+ puzzles I'm still not done with it, it does still seem like perhaps a little limited idea. Not that it matters greatly... fun.
  3. IDLE THUMBS KICKSTARTER!

The story of Phat_l00t (I'm guessing he spelled it the douchey way) is great and THE FIRST THING. Right from the start the podcast goes bonkers again! Already! Don't make me back you twice.

I can't express how wonderful it was to listen to the progresscast. And I'm Nick Breckon
  7. IDLE THUMBS KICKSTARTER!

I pledged, as I pledged I would. Not a whole lot unfortunately, I'm dirt poort at the moment. JEEPERS, 70,000 US Dollars and counting! Rock-em, Sock-em Robots!

I was recently viewing Ghostbusters and wouldn't the Ecto-1 siren make an excellent, and surprising, sound to appear on the show? The podcast would have the move to New York, obviously. Subbes, will you be having dinner with the gang, or did you go for the sponsorship option? It's so crazy, I have listened to Idle Thumbs for so many hours, been with the site for so many years; putting a monetary value on that -any monetary value- feels completely awful and falling short.

Perhaps there's something wrong with me, but I couldn't get into Tekkon Kinkreet. It came across to me as being weird for weirdness' sake. I'm not of the school that says 'animation has to be super expressionistic or else I'd rather have live action', btw. Drawings and animated drawings have a charm of their own, that enables the viewer to be drawn into the world of wonder, oftentimes, with much greater facility. Take for instance The Prince of Egypt. It doesn't do anything you couldn't also do with live action, but I wouldn't want it any other way than animated. Having said that, any movie by Satoshi Kon is brilliant. Paprika and Millennium Actress are excellent.

GUUUYYSSSSS, this is ridiculous! Not even a day and already there's 30,000 Dollars pledged? HOORAY FOR THUMBS! And I've yet to pledge whatever paltry sum I've got left on the temporary credit card I got to back Double Fine! So, I'm curious, I assume the book club podcast will have an announcement in advance about what book you'll be reading, so the listener can read along? I'm also curious about the funding of the podcast. You've got a huge amount of money already, but will you be attempting to generate more funds while the podcast runs through advertisement and the like? Regardless, I'm so excited! I was bopping on the sofa just now.

Gah, Miffy! What the hell is wrong with that guy? I have never organised an event, yet would do miles better than that shithead of a manager at pulling a crowd together. Or a bloodthrirsty lynch mob after spreading false rumors about Michael Biehn. Fun.

It always delights and freaks me out in equal measures when restaurants have secret menus. In the Netherlands, Chinese restaurants have a caucasian-friendly facade with a menu consisting of familiar, safe dishes. But OUT COMES THE BINGO CARD OF DOOM as soon as a Chinese family enters, and an exotic array of dishes ranging from fried chicken feet (yes) and weird vegetables the likes of which we've never seen is rolled out in force! Scary shit.

Miffy, don't explain it! Now you've ruined it!
  15. Fund Tim Schafer's next game YOURSELF!

Going miles off-topic here, but dang do I miss the sushi in California. That's right there at the top of my list of things I miss most. Turn around, step on another fine sushi place where you can load up for no money at all. Going out for sushi in the Netherlands is tantamount to being robbed at gunpoint. Delicious gunpoint, but still.

Oh, I did crack up when a kid in the movie went "That's so wizard, Annie!"

Wow. I don't know what kind of Bud Spencer & Terence Hill acting school this guy is on, but it damn well isn't aikido. Aikido is very visceral and very 'grounded' - which isn't to say it'd be effective in a real life bar fight of course. Few martial arts are, but then few are meant for any sort of application outside the gym or dojo. Anyway, I beg to differ about more realistic fights being less interesting on film. I'm not dissing Jacky Chan-style antics, that can be really fun. But if I see some of those kendo videos, I'm holding my breath in ways lightsabers didn't today. The tension of waiting for that one, swift strike is extremely suspenseful and cinema has appreciated and exploited this excellently before. Just think back to any Sergio Leone western or samurai epic, where the final duel would be decided with a single bullet or slash of the sword. Gimme that in Star Wars, please.
