It's 100% certain that you'll restart the computer at some point. My computer gets restarted like once a month. Half the time it's because Windows XP downloads some update at 3 in the morning and restarts without my knowledge. Always scheming while I'm asleep.

So, um, anybody pick up Advance Wars: Days of Ruin? I'm only a little bit into the campaign but would love to get some Idle Thumbs portable-strategizing going on.

I played the demo last night and I liked it. Some old school arcade action there. I can see myself enjoying the game (and I can see people doing some insane combos and shit on the leaderboards), but then I realized that it's a $59.99 release. If it was twenty bucks cheaper it'd be great, but as it stands it's hard to justify for something that feels like a bigger, more polished version of an XBLA title. The voice overs were hilariously bad though

Unfortunately, yes. Top right for Paragon, bottom right for Renegade -- with the top left often used for charm, bottom left for intimidate. I thought it was a poor decision to do it like this since it essentially takes all the decision making out of the equation. Same with the fact that after every important conversation you get a little "Paragon +X" text come up. Personally, I think if that stat was hidden it'd have been more interesting. It wouldn't have felt so... artificial.

By not messing with the mechanics that made the games so appealing in the first place. Few games make a good transition from 2D to 3D (beyond Nintendo titles). You can update the game a lot with modern graphics, sound, tech but still keep the core mechanics that made the original so good. Gradius V comes to mind. It was a true 2D horizontal shooter, like its roots, but it looked modern, had new controls (using dual stick) and was awesome without being too different. It wasn't cashing in on the prestige of the name.

The resolutions the games run is completely dependent on the games. http://www.playstatic.com/news/1023 Incorrect. If you look at the above link, you will notice that NBA Street on the 360 runs at 1080p. Natively, not upscaled. Again, it depends on the game. There are a handful of true 1080p games on the 360. But yes, 1080p isn't a hardware restraint... it's purely software. If component cables can carry a 1080p signal, then the XBox can output it. Of course, running that high a resolution within a game with all sorts of graphical effects and so on is, to say the least, taxing... but it's up to the developer to decide what balance of resolution/effects to go for (something PC developers know well). Which is to say, many 720p games don't actually run at 720p... but merely upconvert to it. If you're a pixel counter the whole thing is one giant mess. If not, then who cares? If the game runs well it runs well.

Yeah, I use component for the video and the old RCA for the audio until I get a proper sound setup. I want to use HDMI as my TV has three HDMI inputs, but as said above, older XBox 360s don't have HDMI inputs. This was actually one of the selling points of the XBox 360 Elite but I think new regular models come with it now too, though you have to research a bit to find out which is which (it doesn't say on the box). WAY TO CONFUSE THINGS MICROSOFT. I love multiple SKUs! It depends on the game, really. The dashboard does go 1080p though, I think. It's really hard to tell sometimes. vimes: you really should go Premium. It's the best bargain (and I think core is being phased out?) and the hard-drive is really needed (you don't want to buy it later since it's such a rip-off price). I'd be wary of getting refurbished systems though... 360s aren't known for their reliability

I joined this HD-ERA three weeks ago (Sharp Aquos) and I've been nothing but stunned by it. No problems. No slowdown. Mass Effect ran just as shitty as before, nothing new there. But Call of Duty 4 runs fine and looks great for me. So it's not the XBox. It works fine. It's likely your TV's refresh rate. Are you unscaling? Does it have a "gamer mode"? What model? etc. (PS. I'm connected via component cables)
