  1. Movie/TV recommendations

Yeah Toblix, so far my favourite bit is the little shoulder-punch from the end of episode two, which illustrates the same thing: that the tabula rasas aren't as blank as the dollhouse puppeteers think. But so far the metaplot is going agonizingly slowly.
  2. Hehe that timeline is hilarious, mainly for the "BSG made easy" title. I agree on the good episode this week. Nice use of music throughout the entire thing, not just when it was obvious. It has brought back that nice portentous atmosphere that went missing for a while. And yeah Boomer She is the true wildcard of the series; I can never predict what she is going to do. She had me fooled just as much as she did the Chief (feels good to call him that again).
  3. Movie/TV recommendations

I've watched the first three episodes of Dollhouse. Yeah, it's pretty mixed. The basic premise and the HQ setup seems a bit dated now, like something that would appear in the 90's (like Alias and all that crap). The weekly storylines are done pretty well though, with interesting plot twists and fairly subtle themes. The obvious problem is that just as you get to know those characters, they get taken away and Echo is wiped for another week. In fact the concept has inherent problems. How can you get involved with a main character who has no personality? I'm identifying a lot more strongly with Boid so far, to the point where he and [Helo from BSG] seem like the main characters. Echo is just a device... like KIT from Knight Rider or something. The concept would have worked much better in a novel or comic or some other format that has more scope for experiments in narrative and character. I don't think it is a natural good fit for TV. I will continue watching though. It is easily watchable if nothing else, and season-story ark of Echo's growing independence may become interesting.

Sad but true, except it would say: "This game is [...] awesome." - IGN.com

  7. Dragon Lair 2

Oh I dunno. The art style has definite charm, and if you can appreciate pixel art you can find plenty to like in MI2. Looking good does not necessitate high resolution.
  8. Killzone 2

Does it matter? From my hazy memories of the first game I think they are human colonists who have evolved or mutated or something and wanted to become independent. So your role is basically like that of the English in the American War of Independence.
  9. Dragonball Z games

I tested one of the DBZ fighters for one day, and didn't really like it. But that was a few years ago, and I've never been a DBZ fan anyway. The Naruto fighter games were really good though, and I enjoyed them even though I have never watched the show. So if you decide you want another anime beat-em-up, I can recommend those.
  10. Sounds like a Jerry Springer show.
  11. Dantes Inferno trailer

I liked the Sin City and V for Vendetta movies. I was able to take them on their own terms (and I think the Sin City movie was a pretty close to the spirit of the comics anyway). But this kind of thing is incredibly hard to be objective about. If you don't think the film does the book justice, then it's not easy to consider if it is a good film when it stands alone. The From Hell movie was utterly miserable though. Soon we will know how the Watchmen movie has turned out. Will Wheaton in his role as celebrity geek spokesman gave a very encouraging review of it. Fineline, an RPG would definitely have more scope for dialogue in it. Dialogue in like what dat the source material has. But then, the game is already borrowing more from Diablo than from The Divine Comedy, making it an RPG would only make the fact more obvious.

    ahahah yes it is.
  13. I'm just saying they're late to the party. Dissing a game for not following a trend that was already bucked some time ago.
  14. Did they even play the first one? There were long periods of no monsters, with puzzles and stuff instead, throughout Half Life. The Half Life series is almost a 'First-Person Adventure Game" rather than a shooter. So screw those guys who said that thing.
  15. 50 Cent: Blood On The Sand

Yes, it seems to have entered the region of 'so bad that it's good'. Like old godzilla movies.
  16. (IGN.com)

I had to reduce the incidence of 'ign.com' and 'game' because they dwarfed everything else into illegibility. Here are the products of the thread so far in a text file, should anyone else wish to attempt something similar. ignquotes.txt

I thought I would shove this thread into wordl. The results are... well

  19. Dantes Inferno trailer

No one is arguing against using previous fiction as inspiration - as you point out almost every game borrows from something else. The stupid thing is that they are touting it not as "inspired by" or "influenced by" but as the thing itself. Putting the actual title on it and accounting for all the names of people implies that they think they have a faithful adaptation going on here. If they had simply called it 'Inferno' and let people work out the connections for themselves, I would have very little problem with it (other the fact that it is yet another big dumb macho action game when so many of us are crying out for something else in addition to those).
  20. 50 Cent: Blood On The Sand

I like the way he has a wide-eyed rictus of horror on his face whenever he turns to the camera behind cover, like the situation is actually scaring the fucking pants off him (as it no doubt would do). I believe that is in fact 'screen bling'.
  21. 90 mins is optimal, but I think a little leeway either way is good.

  24. Dantes Inferno trailer

AHAHAHAHAHAHA Seriously, the game design is so transparent in this thing. They basically sat down and looked at every character or situation mentioned in the saga, and said "how can we make a monster out of that? What special moves can it have?" Besides, the limbo of the unbaptised is no longer church doctrine. I love how the modern churches can change their own canon and not even bat an eyelid. And people still deny that religious texts are influenced by the hand of man. You know the other stupid thing about this game? Dante's Inferno has had such an influence on the western idea of hell that practically all pop culture depictions of it are already call-backs. So a game based on it will come across as being completely unoriginal since a hundred other games have borrowed from it already; from Doom to Neverwinter Nights, from Monkey Island to Warcraft 3.
  25. Fallout 3

You can ask Fawkes to go in for you. He just mumbles some anachronistic bullshit about it being your destiny and not his ie he is actually a big fucking coward and/or a sadistic bastard.
