Idle News Podblast - 08/01/09: Surprise
DanJW replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I found the blast very funny, although I think it's highly commendable that you exert a level of quality control on yourselves. Also glad that you discovered the good thing about Dragon Age, Chris (being a Bioware community type, I knew about that already, but it's good to spread it around). I downloaded Research and Development and thought it was excellent and frequently hilarious (I laughed and laughed at the end boss). But then I did get stuck for a while a couple of times and I'm probably a seasoned Half Life player - I can see how some bits might be very annoying for anyone that hasn't completed all the Half Life games and episodes on hard mode multiple times. -
If I'm logged on to Steam, then I'm usually free to play and will welcome invites.

I downloaded NeoTokyo after listening to the podcast. I like it, but boy do I suck at it. I can't seem to hit anything in online shooters these days. I've been having the same problem in CS:S recently; I point the cross-hair at the other guy and pull the trigger, and then after I die it tells me that I missed completely. L4D is the only Source game at the moment where my bullets actually hit something. I never used to have this problem, it's getting so bad that I'm worried something might be cancerously eating away at my hand-eye coordination or something. But anyway NeoTokyo is good, but it could do with some tweaks to make the action more visceral and enjoyable. Currently the movement is very slow, but the action, such as explosions and ragdolls animation, happens too fast to see.

I wouldn't say it was crap, but I agree his signature style is getting a little stale. Big Fish is the last time he did anything to surprise me, or generate any strong emotion.

Not just your computer; they are still missing. Luckily the emergency Doug Protocol has been activated, and a designated Tobacco Droid has been dispatched to fix the problem. It will arrive shortly. Please remain in the seated position while you wait. For your pleasure and convenience, here is some music to help pass the time XW2F8ZPOqVw

I see what Chris and Jake mean about the scifi style in C&C4. More specifically, I think you might be referring to the style reminiscent of the most excellent Chris Foss. Behold: http://www.chrisfossart.com/Asimov_Portfolio_Prints_s/47.htm The idea of a game with an art style based on Chris Foss' work excites me no end. And yes, he also illustrated The Joy of Sex http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Foss

We certainly do! Alas I am working crazy hours this weekend and so will probably miss the regular Sunday night game

TF2 is one of the easiest games ever to play for the first time. Like L4D it has popups that tell you what to do. The classes are all pretty self-explanatory too.

He sounds dreamy! Does he also enjoy long walks along the seashore?
-
More importantly, he is a valued long-time member of the Thumb forums.

I get that, but how do you get the different string?

Ooh, do we have a new moderator? Who is this mysterious David? Answer: it's Metallus! With a change of name, just like a superhero changes costume before performing equally heroic deeds

I have no idea what my steam community ID is. I can't find my profile. Obviously I have a steam account, and there is a page for that profile, but the actual community ID seems to be something slightly different. There is however no indication of how to get one from the other. No indication at all. Wow, this is just like the early days of steam all over again, when you had to work stuff out by trial and error. Fuck it, if they can't make it usable then I'm not going to bother using it.

Sure I'll be up for another shot at it. I'll stock up on valium just in case (I enjoy TF2, but playing it for too long makes me angry for some reason that I can't work out).

Och! They've broken through our defences cap'n!

I do not know. Saw Moon! On for one week only at the local independent cinema. It was very sedate, I'm not certain it managed to deliver on its major (spoiled by trailers) twist, but still very well shot and they explored the idea nicely. Cool stuff. I hope we have more films like this coming out of Briton in the future.

I did enjoy The Prestige, but I fear even that is now tarnished for me. He's just too smug!

Yeah thanks, my two most painful memories of the session That and being left in the cornfield to die (although N0wak did come back for me eventually, to be fair). But yes, a close match! I especially enjoyed your oh-so-close dash for the escape vehicle. Can we do Death Toll next time? I haven't played that one much on vs.

REally? Huh. I think they look silly, like some kind of child's toy. Obviously I never finished the Mechwarrior games. I played a couple of the early Earthsiege games afterwards, but they never felt quite the same. Of course the best giant mecha game ever made was... Walker! kzmEJWjcwms

Terminator Salvation. I'm late to the party, because no way was I going to pay to see that in the cinema. Here is my review: In the future, the immense nuclear scars on the landscape are dwarfed by the size of the plot-holes. Also I severely dislike Christian Bale now. Maybe his on-set outburst was him staying in-character, because John Conner appears to be an arrogant self-important twat who gets himself into trouble and then expects the rest of the world to save him and do as he says.

The thing I liked about Mechwarrior 2 (and mercenaries) was that it felt more like a flight sim. Only you were piloting a massive bipedal tank instead of a plane. One effect of this was that the game was more about tactics than about reflexes. A shoot-out like then one in that trailer would be bad news even if you won it, as you would be in no shape to complete your next objectives. It was all about ambushes and outmanoeuvring... much like a flight sim. The new trailer looks nice, but the mechs looks too humanoid for my tastes. I liked the reverse-knee legs of the old style.

Idle Thumbs 35: A Great Way to Have Fun
DanJW replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
It could however be presumed to work on a kind of placebo affect. Like if they think you have a spell protecting you, then your superstitious enemies would be less likely to attack you. After all, this is how it worked in real life, no? Self-fulfilling prophecy.
