This is just ridiculous. Why don't they just give in, make an offline-patch, for players not interested in inter-region multiplayer stuff and let them fuck with the game at their own risk? As long as this stuff can't disrupt people actually using the multiplayer stuff, what's the problem??

Instead of resurrecting the Wii thread for this, here's something hilarious. I never played Wii FPS Conduit or its sequel. They announced some new iOS endless runner game, and with that news post was a link to a video of Conduit 2's cliffhanger ending that was never picked up in a third game, because of lousy sales. It is bonkers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpmMzfphZNE I hope Conduit 3 never ever gets made and this will remain just an insane ending to a series.

There's no need to defend MGS or Dead Space because no one's attacking them. It's about tropes, and identifying them. Nobody's taking sides, not even Anita in her video. (link) There's nothing to cop out of here. Nothing to win or lose. The only thing that happens is that some people now know more about this particular trope.

Gilbert leaves Double Fine, which makes me grumpy...

Yeah! Big Big Castle was pretty nice. I'm hoping it's an actual Musical game with singing. That'd be amazing. -

Don't think he's joking about the Match-3 game, but I think it sounds kind of hilarious. The world needs more musical games, match-3 or not. -
A few cases? First of all, which cases and to what degree are they a stretch? Second of all, let's say those few cases you found in the list are not good examples of damsels in distress how does that invalidate the entire list of examples? Again, how does the list fail? Because it digs up a long list of examples of the trope? That's sort of the point of the list. And it's each instance of a game that exemplifies the trope, which is why some characters are mentioned multiple times. Because not every character is always a damsel in distress, it's more helpful to name the specific game.

It's an almost endless list of actual examples of the trope. How does it fail to illustrate how widespread it is?
-
I don't understand this. You disagree that any of her examples are examples of Damsels in Distress?

They were momentarily gone for me on some thread an hour ago, but they're all back now. On Chrome. Wait, no. They're still missing on a couple of threads!

I think the chair breaking happens really early, like within the first 10 episodes.

Has anyone played this? Sean and Jake mentioned it in the last podcast. It's an iPad adventure game that has you zapping between two time periods to et around certain obstacles. I'm not entirely sure what I think of it, but sort of came away from it happy with the concept and less happy with the execution. There's a lot of locked doors that need various forms of unlocking.. The puzzles almost always feel very sort up only to obstruct the player. Which would be ok if they were more interesting or if interacting with the game was more fun. But it does reach a certain mass at one point where the time mechanic is particularly fun, and at that point the only gripe is just slow traversal from screen to screen but that's a problem in every adventure game. The art style is great, but the animations and stuff look a bit cheap.

Oh, yeah. It is absolutely free, and absolutely worth checking out!

I could've sworn I'd seen screenshots of fireworks, Nappi. Those don't happen at New Year's?

Having this problem too. iPad, iPhone both mobile and regular version of the forum.

Yeah, I'm sorry. I misunderstood you completely and overreacted.

I think you're reaching a tiny bit to make your argument, but sure.. in that exact moment she qualifies for the trope. Like youmeyou says, this isn't a black and white, "now this character is a damsel in distress forever" thing. In that scene, Lara is made to be a damsel. This is a fairly mild case of this, but it still fits the bill. I'm actually curious, how many male video game characters can you think of that are imprisoned, don't break out themselves but instead are rescued by a female character? I'm trying to think of any.. maybe Pey'j in Beyond Good and Evil? I never played that through to the end.
-
How are they contradicting? They are either a Damsel in Distress for the entire or part of a game. In regards to Wonder Woman, then yes, she fits the bill in that specific circumstance, I guess.. And yes, she still counted Zelda in Ocarina of Time, because eventually (and as soon as she actually appears in her Zelda form) she is captured and the player needs to rescue her. She specifically mentions that Zelda's Shiek form was a very strong female character, capable and helping the player along the way.

Ah, now that you mention it I remember a couple of instances of not being able to log-in. It wasn't close to the problems I had with Diablo 3, though. Here's a an accurate browser-version of the SimCity experience: http://tholman.com/playable-simcity-2013/

I feel like every single issue you point out is already addressed in her video and you're choosing to ignore that and focus on the ridiculous notion of how much gamer credentials she has. Marian still constitutes as a Damsel in Distress trope because she is so for almost the entire game and the explicit goal of the game is to rescue her. That she isn't a Damsel in Distress to the very end, while nice, doesn't negate her role in the rest of the game (and this variation on the trope is mentioned by Sarkeesian regarding Zelda). Also, her being turned into an evil killing machine that does Skullmageddon's bidding (she's apparently called "Skullmageddon's Girl!?" according to that wiki you refer to) sounds a whole lot like the "curse cast on damsel in distress" variation that Sarkeesian also mentions in regards to Zelda.
-
Did they have any problems with the Wings of Liberty launch? Also, was SC2 single player as intrinsically always-online as SimCity and Diablo 3? I mean, it probably required you to be logged in but it didn't lag in single player like Diablo 3 did for me.

Tanukitsune, she mentions that Part 2 will be about modern examples and counter-examples, where I imagine she'd mention Samus Aran. I don't remember exactly but she says none of this is inherently wrong or sexist, just that it's a trope that is reoccuring (in vast numbers), and the Double Dragon damsel definitely fits that trope whether or not you're meant to take it seriously. (Also, whatever the intention of Double Dragon Neon, this was the first time I've seen it and it kinda grossed me out..) It would've been nice if she had mentioned Krystal and Peach getting a more active role in Star Fox Assault and Super Mario RPG, though, but I feel like there's a long way from not acknowledging that to "she doesn't know about games". How much game must one play to have a background in gaming? What is game?!

I took issue with what I thought was Twig thinking lesser of this video and declaring himself as the user of brains, and declaring this was made for people who don't use their brains.. Which I took to mean people that enjoyed or thought the video was useful. But I guess I just took it the wrong way. Sorry! And of course, I realise there are people out there that don't even acknowledge the issue.

Sorry, didn't get the joke, I guess. Or find it funny.

Backed! If only because I want to see more of those tree-things with legs that got cut down!
