Allright..... You're right... And it shows after a bit of research - that the early history of gaming is a lot more nuanced than you would think. Check it out at http://www.designboom.com/eng/education/pong.html

Wuhuuu - Joust - great game. It was actually kind of revolutionizing in it's time. Because untill then all games had some kind of shoot-weapon. In joust you had to joust....

Yeah - I say Sega and Nintendo. And playstation when it was released. And Xbox when that was released. At least that's how it went in Scandinavia. Also PC's are big and have always been (in the sense : since late 80's / early 90's- when it took over from Commodore and Amiga... ).- So I guess we're not so different from anyone else....

This is amazing.... Really funny ...

If our avatars were pokemons *witty comment about the state of crazy japanese trends - induced with slight pop references*....

If you were to create a list of principles that should be in the awesome games your own imaginary game-company developed, what would they be? In my list would be: 1) you should always be hearing the breathing of the character you control, and this breathing would of course be affected by the current situation in the game. I think we underestimate the power of breathing, in its ableness to set a mode. 2) The character should have ongoing inner conversation with himself/herself, and should say stuff all the time when interacting with the environment (in a sensible way of course).. So to transcend the feeling of *this is scripted, this is scripted* - I think it would make the virtual world, and the character much more immersive and believeable... Anyone remember Bioforge? In the absolute start of the game, you wake up as a horrible cyborg man-machine experiment... in the cell next to you - you meet this other blue man-machine character. You try to talk sense to him - but he just attacks you: I think it is one of my most memorable moments in gaming: all the while beating this blue guy up with his own severed arm - you shout stuff like: "We don't have to fight - you bastard" - ""We can work together .. aaarrrgghhh *beating him continously with his own arm*"... That was great.... Anyway - what would your principles be?

I think you're not supposed to answer a rhetorical question. Rather nod politely and come with some witty remark about the weather... sort of...

Actually I have never been much into demos. In the last 10 years or so - where demos has been big - it wasn't interesting because of my dial-up... The last year or so - I have had broadband - so it should be a whole new world opening up for me.... It's interesting that really havent swallowed them like - well yeah - ,,, but I think it's that about time that I discover demoes.. The last demo I played was Heart of Darkness demo - ironically a couple of weeks ago - but I liked it. And have just got the game. I'm going to be a demo-whore when I grow up....

And here's where she was blown off her stone:

lol I see what you mean... The little mermaid has actually been through quite a lot. 2 times it's head was sawed off, and last year someone blew it up with explosives. Although that is quite stupid, it must have been ridiculously funny.....

Weell, I'll let you ponder that a bit..... But you're right - the second post didn't make sense - but as I was trying to make some witty answer to Vimes' post which didn't make sense either I think it can be excused. The first post was meant to be an elaborated version of the statement: "The quote of the day doesn't make sense" *hic*

haha .... well sometimes you'll live.... maybe
-
That's like saying: "War is ultimately a dead end street. As a human being I don't relish the role of defending our species from charges of gratuitous violence" Riight - so we will just stop - yeah - seeing it doesn't make sense... anyway, the quote is out of context, and would problably make some kind of sense in its original context... As it is, it doesn't, and constitutes a class exampel of how you can't use logic....

or maybe you only think you have, and in reality it is only a hyper-looney state induced by the toxic fumes of your worlds-most-dangerous-flat-screen-monitor*tm ... uhmm Am I right?

Hell yeah.... Worms 2 rocked !! I remember myself in deadly battles over money in the breaks of my primary school (that was worms one though)... anyways - it rocked !!! I think it is one of the best mulitplayer games ever....
-
Yes it seems that you would need heavy-breathing a lot more in games than real life... what with all the running and saving the world, aliens, monsters big guns etc etc

I just checked out his site: He is danish. There is a nice subtitled video from danish television, telling about his history and the process when working on the hitman 2 soundtrack... It's quite interesting, you should check i out: http://www.jesperkyd.com/extras/Zulu_Interview_Sub.wmv

What about good game soundtracks in general.... My favourites (that I can think of right now) -Discworld Noir This is very good... and you can rip the music from the cd's... -Dune (the original Cryogen-game) Fantastic space age terraforming electronic - there is a soundtrack existing out there, which I'm lucky to own a copy of. -Discworld 1 Very fitting midi-music. I like... -Grim Fandango Perfect noir-meet-mexican blend. Fantastic. Was there ever made a soundtrack? hmm that's all I can think of right now. Let me hear yours... (sorry for going a bit off-topic...) Btw, I think this Jesper Kyd is danish... ?

Skype makes clean sound, but it uses a hell of cpu cycles - which is rather stupid....
-
You're of course right. It would only be viable in certain kinds of game, and certain kinds of style, where the immersive aspect is a main point of the gameplay. Many games are, and should be, more casual - and fun. In these it would be stupid to try to affect the players feelings....

or a tank (...)

The breathing would have to be very subtle - it shouldn't be laud and clear. But just there all the time under all the noises and music already going on... You as a player - wouldn't even think about it after you got used to it... but it would create a rythm... the rythm of living so to speak... the changing dynamics of it would sub-liminally effect you. There's a lot of reasearch done with this in the world of acting - Try to focus at something specific - preferably living. If you then change your normal breathing to one where you only breathe with you mouth, quite deep and rythmically - if you do it correctly there will be a specific effect in your perception of that object. If you try, you should be able to guess it.... Anyway, my point is, that when hearing discrete breathing in a game you would unconciously emulate the same mode of breathing, and thereby become very 'connected' to the characters current 'state'.... I think there was a japanese console-adventure game, which used rather audible breathing as an effect to underscore the 'horror'-mood of the game... The most common sound was -as you explored this vast empty space-station where something awfull involving ghosts was going on - your own heavy breathing inside your space-helmet... I can't remember what it was called...sorry
