  1. Spoiling the Beyond Game

  2. Spoiling the Beyond Game

You're misreading me. I don't think she picked it because of what that alien said at all. I think she picked it because subconciously she knows that it is her "proper" name. When I talk about insignificance (and granted, I didn't make it clear) I mean that it doesn't have a significance that would change what the interpretation we have of the game (ie he is lying or he is wrong but in either case the story is the same, it's a minor point)
  3. Read any good books lately?

Pynchon also has a rambling sort of style which is maybe characteristic of all the post-modern writers of his generation. I don't think it ever gets to a state of "poLords Managementbble" but it does cause his longer books to thread out into a disjoint string of odd situations and strange conversations. Still, he's better at that than anyone else is.
  4. Spoiling the Beyond Game

It's an observation, not a definition. The observation is that little mistakes or omissions on the part of the creators lead to wild speculation among the people who are paying attention to that sort of thing. A decent example is the February 30th sticker in vanilla sky, which had nothing to do with the directors or writers but spawned all kinds of crazy theories. That's what I mean by reading too much into the thing. It also doesn't help that Vanilla sky is a fairly rubbish movie, but that's a different kettel du pisca

Super listo! No particular order. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (Susanna Clarke) Gravity's Rainbow (Pynchon) Ella Minnow Pea (Mark Dunne) Iron Council (China Miéville) Quicksilver (Neal Stephenson) The Fortress of Solitude (Jonathan Lethem) The Etched City (KJ Bishop) Everything is Illuminated (Jonathan Safran Foer) The Pirates! in an adventure with Scientists (Gideon Defoe)
  6. Spoiling the Beyond Game

Ok then, here's my input: 1)People read too much into things that are left somewhat open like this (eg the matrix, half life, vanilla sky, evangelion) 2)BG&E is somewhat open (incomplete in fact) 3)The most obvious conclusion is probably the correct one. Here are the different points which I figure to be obvious conclusions based on things in the game(YMMV): The Name: The "Boss" refers to Shauni as "Shauni Ur Domz" during the fight in those chants he makes in the background. This would imply that Jade's proper name would be Shauni, and her choice of this as a codename is probably subconcious. "Everyone you loved is dead: the children, the pig. " This could be a read a couple of ways: He's lying to Jade to break her spirits or he really thinks that those people are dead (and is mistaken). I don't think either one has any significance. The Alpha lead guy's use of the name "Shauni" isn't very significant either; Either he knows that Jade is the reporter codenamed Shauni or as a servant of the Domz he would have been instructed by the Domz Boss guy to track down Shauni/Defend against Shauni/whatever. Either one is inconsequential. "If the boss lied, then Jade is just a normal human" Well this is clearly impossible as Jade proceeds to go all Kwizatz Haderach in the end sequence. She's clearly some sort of special being prophesied to be able to control the Matrix according to her will. On to the interpretations! There are a couple of possibilities here, I think. One is that Jade is a powerful being that the Domz wanted to control (and probably at one stage did control). This holds up with the things he says about having to subsist on inferior regular-humans. Another is the Jade was created by the Domz in a Lord of the Rings style setup (eg that the Domz Boss put a lot of his power into Shauni). Anything else is conjecture (hell, this stuff is conjecture too) and while entertaining, isn't really anything we can resolve without Ancel here or a sequel to refer to (dream on, you crazy cats).

I'm Paco and so's my wife.
  8. Gaming on the Pocket PC / PDA

I've tried Sam & Max on my ipaq, it works pretty well. The only thing is that you need to map a hardware button to act as the right click (as Sam & Max uses left and right mouse buttons on the pc). I replayed Monkey Island 2 over various bus trips, which was great. Pocket ScummVM is an extremely solid piece of kit.
  9. Adult Swim

Dean! Have you been shooting dope into your scrotum? You can tell me!! I'm hip!!
  10. Wanna get into the games industry? Have a heart attack.

    a) Skills and talent Do not submit resume to EA Unfortunately, given the current trend, any company you end up working for probably has a 50/50 chance of being bought out by EA within a year
  11. Sony, the ultrasounds and the brain

Sony have always been in the habit of trying to snatch random patents for all kinds of stuff they don't have yet and then sitting on them. Usually this is a reprehensible tactic to prevent any competitors from coming up with a technology. I think they did this for 1.5" floppies in the 80's, while a university was developing them, and the technicians were forced to accept Sony jobs in order to continue the work because Sony got the patent before they did.
  12. Quake IV

I was kind of hoping you'd be playing as Bitterman again, the quake 2 ending sort of implied that. Maybe you mount a rescue mission for him or something.
  13. SCREW MP3 Players TO HELL

Technology doesn't need you any more, it's making its own way in the world without you. So long, sister! It's over!
  14. nice painty thing

Arr, matey http://artpad.art.com/?ieqmjs14oioo It has to be a ghost ship, because it forgot to cast a shadow
  15. Half-Life 2: Aftermath

Of note is that this is going to be a Steam only release (at least for the forseeable future). Valve cited the time and effort in securing shelf space, producing masters and getting things printed is just too much. Vivendi aren't involved (valve/vivendi relations aren't at their best, eh?).
  16. Get Perpendicular

Oh my, it's like Schoolhouse Rock, Robot Jones, The Cheat Animations and my Systems lectures all rolled into one.

  18. Death to the digital canvas

I know it's a rant and obeys rant rules; but I don't like that digital has to be lambasted just because you like analog now. You can have both. A problem with analog art is that you only get one (printing and molding excepted), and so it tends towards exhibition or sale. What's nice about digital is that everyone gets a copy for free, and it's easily applied to all kinds of uses. In terms of creation, there are simply some things that you can only do digitally, and some things you can only do with real materials, which is obvious enough. People also view the two areas differently, a beautiful oil painting is much more impressive than an identical image made in Painter or whatever. I'm not saying that this is how it should be; it just is.
  19. R2D2 having a bad day

    looks like Banksy's stuff
  20. A Scanner Darkly

You got it the wrong way around. If the movies are good, then people will say his movies are good. People don't just say movies are good for no reason, and oftentimes it's the director who has a track record of "good" stuff who is harshly criticised when he makes a misstep. Also, School of Rock is hardly inaccessible.
  21. Subspace Aside from the 1000 or so regular players, nobody knows subspace. It's free, what's the worst that could happen?
  22. A Scanner Darkly

I really consider Waking Life as a proof of concept rather than a proper feature, and in that sense it works. All of linklater's written stuff is a mess
  23. A Scanner Darkly

Check out "Waking Life" if you like that sort of style. It's Linklater's first film using the rotoscope animation tech, and it's more fluid in terms of styles than scanner will be. For that he had a number of different artists working on different parts, and the "plot" (like it has one) allowed for lots of fun stuff to happen with the animation. It's sort of like a moving A Lesson is Learned but the Damage is Irreversible
