  1. I agree with Jake here, its completely just a style. And what has been overlooked here, is how we *adjust* to a style and mange to look beyond its shortcomings. If you hadn't played any games in your life, except for 80's games, and then picked up GTA, or Mafia or Hitman.. ..it would freak you out! You won't have adjusted to the style, and it would just look wierd. like someone had done a stop motion film of a cut up photograph or something. The same will happen in the future, when facial animation will much more prolific. A future person we will look back on GTA/hitman etc and think it looks unrealistic, and much worse than the cartoon graphics of many premillenium games.
  2. I think he is an awesome model! I think the whole thing looks fantastic except that the scene needs some antialiasing, since some of the lines used for the cell shading effect are quite jagged. Toon shading will continue to improve. One day someone will make a toon shaded game, with great art direction that will just blow us all away. ..kinda like this Robbie Williams video clip in 2001:
  3. Smile and say "Elephant Juice"

    I'm confused, explain everything!
  4. BUY games? what are you, stupid?

I buy heaps of games. Infact, I think you are lucky to have me on this site, considering the consumer force I represent.
  5. OK, waaaay too much sarcasm in this thread!
  6. If you were a filthy rich developer/publisher....

I didn't know Ron was rich. If he had the money, I thought he'd use it to make more Bing Bong Islands...But perhaps he has other ideas about what to do with his money other than the 'let's make a game' ideas that we do!
  7. If you were a filthy rich developer/publisher....

Thats harsh! Didn't Ron blow most of his fortune on Good And Evil? Besides I always like to think that the puzzles in BingBong island would've ended up in Monkey Island, if Ron did another one. You've just got to blur your eyes a little!
  8. If you were a filthy rich developer/publisher....

maybe because we go to the same church.
  9. If you were a filthy rich developer/publisher....

I would get someone to draw lots of cool pictures - cos illustration rocks. Then I would create a cool lead character - someone we all want to be - like Tim Schafer said. And then I'd create a story, cos Ron Gilbert proportedly wrote lots of stories prior to one of his games (eventho secretly he borrowed them from a book by Tim Powers) Then I'd create the rules for the 'universe', and make the universe rich and immersive. The gameplay would be very dialog intensive cos dialog is funny, and builds character, and drama, and inspires the imagination. The gameplay would be non-urgent so people can really get immersed, be it puzzles or collecting stuff or what. Then I'd design the whole game on paper, like Tim Schafer said. Then code the engine using lots of other peoples code, and the graphics. And then we'd all sit down and create dialog for weeks, I'd get all my friends over and maybe even fly some in by plane cos its gonna be cool. And we would write lots and lots of dialog, and laugh heaps, and share memories, and not argue too much cos 90% of the game had been created. And even if the game sucked and nobody bought it, we would still have those few wonderful weeks. Then I would be so happy, I'd clap my hands like this!
  10. OK, WTF?! Andy Kaufmann is back!

hoax. He didn't show at the big party they threw for him. do a yahoo news search for 'Andy Kaufman didn't ' http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/variety/20040517/va_vp/comic_wrangles_comeback_3
  11. Eric Chahi Interview

It had a good front cover. An eye catching logo, with a picture of a a dog with a boy holding an imaginative gun. It really got the imagination going. I'd suggest it probably helped to sell the game in the shops. It was generally poorly reviewed because of its trial and error gameplay and some reviewers said it was too easy/short ( I still haven't finished it ) I thought it was a little unfair since the crash bandicoot games are also trial and error, but I guess HOD was a little more unfashionably oldschool because it didn't have polygons. What is interesting is that the graphics were done in 3D and then rendered - would be cool to see the authors do something with the 3D assets. They are timeless pieces of work, and good art, animation, and stories stand the test of time. At some point, Spielberg even wanted to make Chahis Heart of Darkness into a movie! What is Eric Chahi doing now?

  13. Quote of the Moment - Doug Lowenstein

Maybe he considers all bands second albums as sequels? Criticized movie sequels are so common that you've inadvertantly mentioned one - Flintstones (ie Viva rock vegas) BTW, There are a good amount of Temple Of Doom preferrers. We tend to keep quiet tho.
