  1. When did you break your first joystick?

Ah, good times. Nearly mashed my keyboard with that game. The only peripheral I've ever broken was a Sega Master System II game pad. It shattered into several pieces as it crashed into the wall, inches away from it's intended target - the head of my friend, who'd just managed to pull the power supply out of the wall, with only two games to play in the first division of Speedball 2. Wrapped with several rolls of electrical tape, the same game pad later saw me through to becoming league champion. Still pissed at my mate, though. Aside: The 8-bit version of Speedball 2 was, and still is, superior to the 16-bit. Discuss
  2. Obscure games featurama (aka "remember this?")

When I read this I figured you were talking about Wizball and just got the name wrong. Googled it and found out it was the sequel to Wizball Sweet! Had no idea there was one. Wizball was great, not to mention unique. Wizkid sounds pretty similar. And I agree with Dogman and ysbreker: Hardwar was very underrated and the soundtrack, which I still listen to, is scorching. I always thought Sonic Spinball was a weird game - strange direction to take the franchise in. Still scratch my head about it. Also, every game I played on my old bbc b+ was based on some crazy, laughable premise, including this one
  3. Watch these upcoming games

GC2 looks awesome ysbreker, ta for the screen and links. I'm playing and loving the original at the moment, although I'm not normally a huge fan of RTS (it's the squad tactics and micro management that I find so much more enjoyable than other RTSs). Here's hoping they pull off the sequel properly.
  4. Global Gladaitors

By the way, I just read that review you linked to properly, Nick. Quite the chortle in parts. yep, sounds 'pretty much advertising free' to me...
  5. Global Gladaitors

The game was decent but 9.7/10 is way too generous methinks. 8-ish at best I'd say - I don't think it will have aged particularly well either. And yeah, it definitely didn't feel right playing a McDonald's game. I recall that being a strange time with respect to corporate sponsorship in games. Remember Cool Spot? [Edit: Now you've got a reply and your thread's been bumped right back to the top of the list. So, feeling any of that great joy? ]
  6. Another World Not As Good As Flashback?

Oooh yeeaah! How good was that? I didn't go so far as to die on the spot but I definitely wet my pants a little. I got Flashback before Another World (I think the two games were released a matter of months apart on the Megadrive) and it stayed at the top of my favourite games list for several years. Lost count of the number of times I replayed it. I only got a copy of Another World four or five years ago but it was still such an impressive game. A work of art. They're both stinkingly good games. AW a stunning concept piece, FB a finely tuned machine.
  7. Blue Shift: postcards from Barney

This thread makes me want to reinstall the Half Life suite right now. Know what you mean about being enveloped by the Black Mesa state of mind, Trep (if I may be so bold as to call you that). HL, OF and BS - truly great gaming. Better start thinking about buying a new rig in preparation for HL2.
  8. Chuckie Egg - the best platformer ever?

OK, perhaps not, but it definitely kicked ass. Released in '83, it was the definitive game on my BBC micro. Collecting eggs whilst avoiding chickens (and one giant flying duck thing on harder levels) - if that's not genius, I don't know what is Brilliant game pace, the most responsive game character I ever played on the BBC, and remarkably well-tuned gameplay. Pure gold from A&F Software (who never released anything else anywhere near the calibre of Chuckie Egg). Note the screenshot: "Please start your tape". Damn, that brings back some memories. Anyone remember this puppy?
  9. Another World Not As Good As Flashback?

Yeah, F2B was a genuine sequel to Flashback (drifting through space in cryo sleep after Flashback, Conrad Hart is intercepted by the morphs and thrown in jail - called New Alcatraz I think). At the time, I remember thinking it was a pretty good game. Reinstalled it a couple of months ago and couldn't believe how badly it had aged - completely unplayable. Ruined that memory...
