  1. Things That Improve Your Life

I scoffed, than ran it, and discovered my browser was unsecure (now fixed). Thank you, sir!
  2. Things That Improve Your Life

This is quickly becoming the "cool technology" thread, so here's something which isn't just a new app for you to try: MemRise is new (completely free) website that specializes in visual learning. It helps your brain remember things by creating images from what you see. I recently learned how to read a Chinese food menu and can attest to how well it works. (I can't imagine a situation where it's going to come in handy, but I hope it will one day!) And going back to cool tech: Buy a CD from Amazon after 1998? Check Amazon Cloud Player for MP3 tracks Dayum!
  3. Django Unchained

Damn. I hated that. What an unnecessarily aggressive interview. The subtext was, "I think your movies lead to violence in real life". How can anyone defend themselves from such a ridiculous position? It's impossible! Clearly Tarantino wasn't fully briefed on the angle of the interview. It's one thing to willingly go into something knowing you're going to be challenged, it's another thing entirely to be doing the promotional rounds, and have someone try and drag you into an impossible-to-resolve discussion for 8 mins. How incredibly unprofessional of Channel 4 News and Krishnan Guru-Murthy! There's lot of evidence that movie violence isn't directly related to real-life violence, and there's circumstantial evidence that it is. It's not up to Tarantino to list both sides! Roger Ebert asked Tarantino about violence way back in 1994 (and even then Ebert remarks that it's an "unoriginal question"). Here's Tarantino's answer: I can't wait for Guru-Murthy's inevitable "explosive" interview with Dan Houser.
  4. BioShock Infinite

Yep, I got stung by it, too, assuming it was a spoiler to do with the game in this thread ¬ ¬ It took me completely by surprise, just like when
  5. eReaders - What is everyone's thoughts?

Apart from the inevitable piracy of books (which was incredibly rare before eReaders were invented) I still think they're a pretty good idea, especially if you're travelling. Being able to take a stack of books and movies in one device (my iPad) is great -- plus I can read PDFs and things on it. That said, I used to read quite regularly on my iPad, but now I've started to find myself playing games instead. Bah! Not what I intended. Plus, it's a little too big for public transport, and it's very heavy to hold for any good length of time, too. In all, it's not great for reading books. I'd consider selling it and switching to an iPad Mini, but the screen looks really blocky by comparison. I see other people holding their Kindle's with one hand, enjoying their books, and I'm a bit jealous. Lately, I've found myself missing being able to literally flip through a book. Especially reference books, which I need sometimes. Hum!
  6. Unnecessary Comical Picture Thread

    Indeed!
  7. Things That Improve Your Life

Jesus, how on earth did you even find that option?? Edit: You still have to rank everything about of 100... All you change is the descriptions and the colours.
  8. Things That Improve Your Life

Sounds like I need it, then! I was an early supporter of the Podcasts app, but it's let me down too many times now
  9. Things That Improve Your Life

Yeah, I started messing around with YNAB -- it's pretty clever, actually. It's surprising how much of a difference pre-spending all your money makes. I should get back into that, really.
  10. The Hobbit...

Hey, Trumbull is back! Hopefully this new film won't be a repeat of Brainstorm.
  11. It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like CHRISTMAS

    Did somebody say Christmas?
  12. Curiosity – What's Inside the Cube?

Woo! 551,319 in one go! Man, that got dull...
  13. Cyberpunk 2077

You what was a good game in this vein? BloodNet. Witty dialogue, interesting world, annoying RPG elements. It had it all! (I actually really did like it.)
  14. Things That Improve Your Life

I just found myself cursing the Podcasts app today (although I think it's necessary that it shows every episode, so I can go back and pick one) -- this could be good! Thanks! (Yet another thing my ancient Zune does a million times better than Apple -- ffs.)
  15. I know... things I actually want to read. What's up with that?
  16. Have you got the level where you install the game yet? Interesting article on DF: http://www.polygon.c...gen-kickstarter
  17. Obligatory Comical YouTube Thread II: The Fall of YouTube

Ha. It's completely hypnotic, whatever it is.
  18. Obligatory Comical YouTube Thread II: The Fall of YouTube

Lol. She's not that good of an actress. Fun, though.
  19. Unnecessary Comical Picture Thread

If you want to learn a bit of Chinese, this is good fun: http://www.memrise.com/course/749/the-guardian-chinese-challenge/ It uses imaging techniques to help you remember stuff. (I can now read a Chinese menu )
  20. Thirty Flights of Loving

Heh. Well interactivity doesn't equal a game. As I've said before, games have been around a lot longer than video games, but they all share several traits in common: Choices, rules, goals. I'm just weirded out that everyone seems to refer to this (rather interesting) experiment in story-telling as a game. It's something new, different and exciting.

  22. Things That Improve Your Life

    JohnnyW2001 I think.
  23. This is the new (console) shit!

Huh. It seems that XNA isn't used all that much after all. Apparently it's not much use if you want to push the console to its limits -- which isn't that surprising.
  24. Things That Improve Your Life

That Steam Cleaner is handy! I only have about six Steam games actually installed and it still removed 1.7GB of files! Also: I WANT A KITTEN!
  25. This is the new (console) shit!

Yep, that means the usual solution is software emulation, which is very time consuming and costly. Given how little of an uproar there was when MS cancelled XBox compatibility last time, I'm not convinced they won't just do the same again It's funny, I was working at Sony when they released the PS2, and they had a dedicated team testing compatibility for EVERY PlayStation title. All day, every day, just working through the back catalogue. How times have changed. I hope there's proper backwards compatibility this time, but time will tell. (Can someone tell me: Doesn't the 360 rely on .net and DirectX? Would that make it less dependent on hardware specifics?)
