Miasmata - Ye Olde Cartography, Falling Down Hills, Drowning, Getting Eaten by a Grue Simulator

No, wait, the sun is in the south. Now I'm even more confused. Also, is it just me or does the character keep forgetting things he has already researhed? -

I think I finally figured out what's wrong with the mapping & compass: nothing, just that the sun is in the north in this game so the island is in the southern hemisphere. That had me puzzled for a while, everything seemed wrong about the directions. -
I decided to buy the DRM-Free then realized I'd already spent all the money in my digital purchase account (on the steam sale) and pirated instead. Oops.

The environment is a bit boring, I must admit. But I guess that's also what gives you the ability to get lost, so maybe it needs to be a bit boring. Yep, I think it's the lighting. Also, the sun seems to shine even through the landscape or the sea. PS. Is there a linear tutorial part that ends with getting the first component for the cure? I may have taken an unconventional route to the "ruin site b" where the algae was, but I didn't find any further maps/instructions there or on the way there. -
Welcome back!

Maybe it's source code will leak in 2013? Half-Life is an anagram for leaf fhil. what does "fhil" tell you? its a sequence with missing letters "g", "j", "k". Since it's 2013, take 3 from the end, so take the third letter. That gives us "leaf", "k" and 201. Since 2+0+1 is 3, we keep the first 3 letters of "leaf", which leaves us "lea" + "k" = LEAK!!!

Hngh. Sorry it sounded that way. I hope I don't need to add "IMHO" to every sentence. It's what I personally don't want to bother thinking about (or maybe I do a little bit since I'm in this conversation), I'm not telling the rest to stop this thread. I agree that it might be an interesting puzzle/paradox from some perspective.

Oh, good that you won't lose all your progress if you die. I now wish I didn't know that, though. The engine is kind of wonky. Most of the time it seems to render the world just fine, but then you get occasional really bad stuttering (maybe I should dial down the settings, though). I love how the walking works -- accelerates downhill and slow going uphill. At the moment I'm thinking all FP games should work like this, but I'm not sure if it would be fun in really big open world games. The sound design in the game really sucks, though. I already want to see a HD remake with proper attention to sounds. -
Far Cry 3 wasn't really that disappointing to me because I wasn't expecting it to be Far Cry 2 + 1. From all the things I'd heard about it I kind of expected it to be worse than it ended up being. At the moment I'm looking forward to Gone Home, The Witness, whatever Famous Video Games makes next, The Cave, DFA, playing some of the games on my wishlist and what I got from the sale that are already out, BioShock Infinite (just a bit, I want to see the environment, but not that interested in playing the game set in it), GTA V Five, Beyond Good & Evil 2 (is it really coming out in 2013, though? doubt it), Overgrowth (although following it's progress so far has been weird since it's not clear what the game is beyond the cool lagomorph-based melee combat and why it's taking so long), The Dream Machine (still haven't played chapter 3). Dead Island: Riptide, Metro: Last Light, Sir, You Are Being Hunted, 0x10c, Zeno Clash 2, Gunpoint, Tetrobot and Co., Wasteland 2, Dead State, Kenshi (must admit to not having tried the alpha so far, though), HL3, Prison Architect. Last but not least: Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs (almost forgot about this. haha get it?). PS. Amazing number of interesting adventure games on the horizon! PPS. Didn't we just have a similar thread a couple of months ago?

It's the Far Cry 2 of botany-based adventure games! Holy crap! I finally saw the creature. I made my way to the third camp, and started going forward into the forest to find that plant. I heard a roar and turned around, walked back to the house. I think we are safe in houses, right? I waited and explored around the camp a few minutes, then decided to go forward again. I didn't hear a roar that time, but some way into the forest my (the PCs) heart started beating. I didn't see anything at first... Now I'm scared to keep playing because if it kills me I'll have to start over, right? -
Some random guy just asked for some of my TF2 items and offered Dota 2 in return. I gave him the Lugermorph and Big Kill (I think it was called) and some hat. Is this trading a thing now? Did he want these for selling on the market? Did I get duped? PS. I'll trade Dota 2 for anything on my wishlist.
-
I traded all of my rest of TF2 items for Chaos on Deponia just to be rid of them. Nothing else was probably worth much there.
-
I guess. I think it's not a real issue to bother thinking about, though.
-
Well, without going into the "bad/good on its own", what I meant was that instead of thinking "I'll leave a better world for my children X, Y and Z", I can think of "I'll leave a better world for my offspring", or just "I'll leave a better world for people". It doesn't have to be a specific individual because we can abstract out the very specific individuals.
-
I think it's only a paradox if you insist that quality means something only to specific individuals. And if you zoom out from that level, we don't need to think about potential existence of the merging of exactly that specific sperm & egg cells. You are right that from the perspective of a specific individual, they should be greatful just for their existence, but we don't need to think about that specific individual before it exists -- we can use abstraction.

I haven't found time to read this whole thread, but this particular thing is great! I've been using it for more than a week and I like it! I think SleepCycle phone app was also mentioned. I've tried that in the past, but I'm not sure it actually helped me in any way. I might give it another try. I don't know if it's been mentioned, but one of the biggest uses for my smartphone is Twitter + Instapaper combo. I suppose any alternatives would work as well. I almost never click on a link on twitter, instead I click "Read Later" and when I have time I'll read the things without the ads or other clutter. Of course, this means I'm not likely to go back, find the tweet and retweet it if I liked what I read

If I remember correctly about the Chile mission, it required some pretty insanely precise timing to do the way I wanted to do it. And that means lots of trial and error.
-
Don't know about being a terrible port. It's not a very interesting game, but for 4€ might be worth it.

Great talks!

I'm trying to play this game on PC but I think it just doesn't work well at all on a 4:3 monitor I thought it was a mouse/keyboard issue and connected a PS3 controller, but it's not much better that way. So I think it just might need widescreen to work fully as intended. I did enjoy Ass 2 and AssBro and I played those on PS3 behind a TV.

Finished it. Pretty much agree with what Toblix and elmuerte have said. That collapsing building part was the worst. Another place I got stuck for a while was where you only had the axe and had to beat through a bunch of zombies. I realized I should only knock them down and not kill them, that helped me get through there. I didn't mind the (admittedly bad) story so much, though. And nothing about the controls bothered me, except it took me a while to remember what I had to do to finish dead zombies (that I had to do probably just once in the beginning of the game and then needed it past the middle point).
-
I guess. [edit] PS did you actually see the guy.

I know him, but what weird thing did it reveal? I probably wasn't paying attention.
