Idle Forums Game Club 2 - Shadow of the Colossus edition
Erkki replied to Sno's topic in Video Gaming
I'm pretty sure it required a running jump, but I could be wrong. I'm talking about jumping onto the rectangular rock between the ramp and the large round platform. It has handholds on the side facing you the most, but not on the side the camera faces, if I remember correctly. -

I did #3 a couple of days ago. Getting to it was a pain. I was stuck in the part where you have to jump onto a rock from an upwards spiraling ramp and then from there to the platform. Whenever you are on top of the ramp and not fucking with the camera, the camera annoyingly turns into a direction facing the wrong side of the rock, which means your jump will miss if you run straight. Then you swim for 2 minutes to get back to the beginning of the walkway and try again. It took me around 7 attempts and was not fun, until I found the right angle I had to run at to compensate for the camera's will. I do not see the point of putting the player through such an exercise, but maybe this didn't seem like a big issue during testing. This really wouldn't do in a modern game and I wonder if The Last Guardian will also be clumsy like this. The colossus itself is more interesting than the previous two, but to get it to try to hit you in the way that you can climb it means running around on the smallish platform and sometimes it takes a fucking long time to get it right, or at least took me. Overall I'm starting to feel the game is not really that great, although some aspects like the horse and the basic idea of fighting colossal things are awesome. -
The Cave: Ron Gilbert's Double Fine Game (A Tim Schafer Production) (Not Double Fine Adventure)

Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't necessarily put MI2 first. I don't know what my actual order is but I like 3 a lot more than many fans of 2 seem to. Then 2 is the one I've played the least so I should replay it. Is the SE version good? -
LOL! Can't stop laughing. Send help!

I started reading it for the first time almost a year ago... I've really let myself go in terms of reading. Didn't finish a single book last year. I used to read at least one a month or so.

Man, that Gibson, he can sentence.

Finished it! Was surprisingly short, but the length was fine for me, as I was now able to play through it over a single weekend and I will have only intermittent access to my PS3 now. I forgot how the first game ended, but Is Naughty Dog working on anything else besides Last of Us? I am really looking forward to that one, but I'm afraid it will be just as much about ridiculous firefights as Uncharted is. But I hope it won't be.

Finally got this game and started playing after getting frustrated with the 4th Colossus in Shadow of the Colossus. It's roughly as good as Uncharted 2 to me, but there's still too much combat. Maybe I should play more stealthily, but I don't feel like doing that in Uncharted games. Especially if failure means either A ) your attempt at stealth was useless, now deal with the reinforcements anyway or B ) restart checkpoint So I just play non-stealthy and started the game on Very Easy just because I know I don't care for the combat in these games. I also should try the new aiming setting now that I've been reminded about it by this thread. Besides the combat, I'm mostly loving it, although some other sequences are longer than they have to be as well (the whole chateau and the citadel after that were boring). I just made it to the cruise ship and man, the part that led up to that was amazing, except for the dudes spawning all over, of course. I also really liked the whole Cartagena chapter, except the obvious ridiculousness that was already pointed out. The supernatural elements of the story are annoying. They feel like a cheap shot.

I finally was able to start playing this, and killed the first and second colossi. I played this on the PS2 years ago, maybe getting 5 or 6 of them, so it's still somewhat familiar, but I didn't remember many details. Liked the climbing tutorial before the first one, but PS do we need spoilers for stuff like this or not? The second one I remembered from the first playthrough and it was really a piece of cake, but with both colossi I had some trouble with the grip. Any time the colossus was moving, I seemed to hit some kind of fell rhythm where I was about to move, then get interrupted, and thus several times in a row so I was holding down left or right for example, but all the kid did was let go with his other arm, grab again, let go, grab, let go, grab, let go. I have to agree with syntheticgerbil, that the gameplay could use a lot more polishing. And while the camera can be good at times, it can also be infuriating, like when making turns to tight-ish places while riding Argo, and then this bit on the way to the 3rd colossus, which I guess I won't talk about until 3 days from now. But it has me stuck because of the camera, basically! -
Finally Steam is downloading The Witcher 2 and I want to keep it downloading all night so I could sneak a half an hour of play before work. What is the best way to prevent Win7 from going to sleep mode while downloading? (I know a quick fix solution: temporarily change power settings and set them back later, but I'm thinking of how to make this easier in the future) I know ideally Steam would call some Windows API's to indicate it's not idle, but it doesn't seem to do that as the PC just went to sleep a moment ago. There is supposedly some programs that prevent sleep mode while they run. But ideally it should go to sleep when the download is finished. Is there something that monitors network activity and if it's over some threshold, keeps it from sleeping? Actually, I think I've seen the PC wake periodically as if by itself. I suppose it might be the network card that is waking it (that setting is enabled). If Steam is downloading at the moment the PC goes to sleep, is it likely the network card will still receive some packets and wake it up?

I wish I had played those games (both SS's) when they came out. So lets say I wanted to have a more or less authentic experience and not turn off things like weapon degradation or respawning (although the latter bothered me a lot when I tried to play it). If I play on a lower difficulty settings, would I still have to minmax much? In other words, if I turn it on Easy, does it become more tolerant of mistakes? Because how the hell can I avoid mistakes on the first playthrough?

What? Get rid of forced Swedish?

It killed me several times. And I do mean quite several, perhaps tens (well, some of them might have been me falling to death). Maybe because I was throwing rocks or otherwise threatening it? Explore. Take some other paths leading away from the first few areas that are near the center of the map. -
Hmm.. might be interested in The Banner Saga key. Do you want Puzzle Agent in return?

I'm actually liking Revelations as well after palying for a while (actually I played this the whole day today) and I agree that it's almost as good as Brothergood. So far I've kept the templar awareness level low by bribes to keep away that TD minigame. But sometimes I let it get to 100% because it's fun to hunt down the officials.

Yes, very cleverly designed! There are almost always mutliple ways to the mission, be it waterways or roads, and each time you have some motivation to explore along the way because the straight road isn't safe anyway. I might have said something along those lines recently. I didn't mean the rivers are safer than roads; what I meant was that the waterways in this game are at least useful (as opposed to Far Cry 3). Sometimes it makes sense to choose them instead of roads, even if they are not safer. Also, you have the option of swimming. Maybe not always, and I forget how swimming worked exactly -- could you hide from guys underwater somewhat?
-
Ah, yes, I needed to do exactly one more story mission to open it.
-
How do I recruit the assassins anyway? I'm just past the first tower defense mission and have just been roaming around causing trouble after that.
-
I'm all for games that don't involve shooting! However, in this game it is one of the main mechanics -- just moving around and collecting relics & fetish items from boxes doesn't really cut it. So now when they gradually remove the uses for the main mechanic and replace it with nothing, I feel bored and I turn into a murderer. Of course, I could also stop playing, because the exploration isn't that fun any more (but flying the wingsuit still is, somewhat). I think this game is at its best when you still haven't discovered most places, and are exploring without knowing what's ahead. Mapless would probably be best. I don't think I'd have much more fun than now if I'd start a new game.
-
Did anyone else who continued playing after the end start shooting the Rakyat? There are barely any pirates/bandits left, so much of the shooting mechanic is useless... unless you turn against the Rakyat. Which I did. Of course, once I kill one bunch or move away from them, the others will believe that I turned nice again.

So I got this game recently and have played a bit, but it seems incredibly boring and old. If it's about 10 hours long, might be worth going through it, but no more than that.
-
Sorry. Somehow didn't think of that.
-
Yeah, I was just trying to figure out how to land safely without it. But seems to chance-based.
-
I'm having fun with the wingsuit you get when you go to the second island. It's crazy! Can deploy it mid jump and all you need to do is find a place few meters higher than the surroundings to open it (I guess you have to be a couple of meters off ground). Still haven't figured out when a landing kills me and when it doesn't though. Doesn't seem to be directly related to landing angle.
