What's all this about review scores on the Idle Thumbs forums? The word score should be banned like ********* and bacon. Oh wait, for some reason bacon isn't banned.

Idle Forums Game Club 2 - Shadow of the Colossus edition

Yes I think we are on #10, at least 2 of us have posted about it already -
The most interesting FP games for me in the last couple of years have been Amnesia and Miasmata. I'm already pretty sure BioShock Infinite won't qualify as such, but I'm still interested in playing it just to explore the awesome world they have created. And if it's anything like Dishonored more than BioShock 1, maybe I'll even enjoy it enough to not play on the easiest setting.

On one hand I'm really interested in this game because of the design (esp. visua). On the other hand, from the trailers all I can see is COMBAT COMBAT COMBAT, HUGE BATTLES, and I think: meh, do I really want to play this? I probably do at some point, but I think I'm going to skip preordering or even buying it early and wait for Chirstmas or something.

So I kind of went ahead and finished the game (for the first time, as I now remember that I didn't finish it last time), but here are my thoughts on 8 and 9: #8 This was fun even just because it was somewhat different. I didn't find it too difficult (I remembered the fight from last time), but it was fun. #9 After the 9th one I didn't feel much frustration any more (except some small bits) and the game suddenly got much better for me. Maybe I just got used to it, or it was because I played from there to the end of the game in only two sessions, but I did find all the rest of the colossi more exciting (although the flying ones from earlier are still some of my favourites). #10 Also I remember now that the first time I played this game, #10 was the last one I saw. Don't remember if I beat it then or got stuck. -
Awesome, found the file and the change to make, but it's a binary file, so I'll probably have to figure out how to update some indexes using a hex editor. [edit] the solution was to delete the file (prefs.sav) and replace it with a default(?) one (one folder up), otherwise it somehow got restored, maybe by Steam cloud?

I broke the game by accidentally selecting "Keyboard" for the radial menu controls. Thankfully this was after finishing the main quest, but still, now I can't select Relic Raiser and some other solos. Seriously -- some solos can't be selected with keyboard controls, yet they exist. And for some reason the game refuses to switch back to mouse controls for those. Anyone know which config file has the bindings? There's this file input.lua, but I can't figure that one out. I think it just maps keyboard to controller input names, but can't figure out if the radial menu stuff is there.

That video included Prince of Persia, which does not have a right-bias. You start going right, but pretty soon you have to turn left, get the sword and go back right. In the second level you mostly go left, and in the third one as well. I don't remember the 4th and 5th level very well, but I think one of them had you mostly going right, and 6th is going left, and then the 7th is going right and then back left. And the 8th as well -- right, back left. And after that I don't remember much, but when you face the Vizier in the end he is to your left. And so on. It would be interesting to know whether going left or right in that game in specific places was intentional or just happened.

Gilbert leaves Double Fine, which makes me grumpy...

Nick Breckon joined Double Fine? Is the world ready for this? -
Wow, this thread is insane. Up to page 12 or so, I was thinking, "Am I still on the Idle Thumbs forums?" and then it turned into a normal/interesting discussion. For what it's worth, I think the video probably did its job, though I know almost nothing about the kickstarter. At least I hadn't actually considered how many of the most popular game series have the damsel in distress motif -- but then I have played almost no Mario games and only a two Zeldas, one of which didn't have any Zelda in it as far as I remember. Also the "regressive crap" comment seemed to be about resurrecting the sexism in that game over and over, not that the whole game is regressive crap, so I didn't mind it.

That bow seems over-engineered. I hope it turns out good enough in practice to receive my annual bow-of-the-year award.

I'm a bit disappointed by the art direction (or lack of it) as well. Still can't wait to play it, though.

I killed some up to the 11th or 12th last week, which I shouldn't have done because now I can't remember which number was which to write about my experiences here. I guess I'll look them up on youtube later. -
Man, this game is addictive. I almost wish I hadn't bought it. Just completed a 12 h session.
-
I just got an iPad mini and played The Room. Nicely done. Never finished Sword & Sworcery and should try that again.

I recently found out that Teleglitch was made in Estonia. Yay, finally someone here made a game people know about!

I actually raced ahead a bit and have defeated 9 colossi -- I was at my parents' where my PS3 still is with nothing else to do and wanted to find a colossus I hadn't met yet in my previous playthrough. Well, I remember the 9th and can think of at least one more that I haven't seen this time, so I'm beginning to wonder if I maybe actually finished the game the first time after all, but my memory of that has somewhy been wiped. -
Decided to do some of the Boston side content as well. Ended up doing all of it (as much as can be found without buying the maps) and found this unleashed a whole multi-hour row of homestead missions. Enjoyed that part, but maybe doing that earlier would have been better since the story with Achilles seems to get a bit out of sync this way. Still don't see why anyone would enjoy spending time in menus to send out carts, though.

Few more notes: I think not being able to murder civilians was a good idea. In the last game I did it just out of boredom occasionally and it kind of ruined the mood. The tree climbing was cool! I'm impressed they managed to make the whole wilderness so easily climbable, although it did kind of all look the samey thanks to that. I think the story of two secret factions endlessly fighting each other is getting boring by now. [EDIT]Also: Worst bow of the year. The credits were probably longer than even Far Cry 3's. Next year I'm expecting an hour full of credits. I wonder how many people have jobs putting together the credits, and whether they are credited.

Finished the game. It seemed promising at first, but then after about half the game devolved into regular Assassin's Creed where I was collecting things and constantly looking at the map for the next thing to collect. I think I got everything or most in New York. It was surprising how few missions there was in NY, but at least I got my fill of the side content there. I probably don't want to repeat that for Boston. The wilderness often made me think how much better Red Dead Redemption was. Maybe this game just lacked horse persistence technology. The homestead things, with multiple levels of workers, sending convoys and so on was incomprehensible. I never saw how to get more workers beyond the 1st level woodworker guy. Was that built for DLC? Seems strange that someone would play this during the regular game. Of course, the previous Assassin's Creed had the same pointless stuff in slightly different form. I'm glad

The mission where you chase Charles Lee. Video game garbage right there.

With people falling behind, should we change our schedule to 2 weeks per colossus? I also had to catch up a bit and felled 6th and 7th in the same sitting. Quite enjoyed both of them. 6th spoiler: I also found some save lizards and lots of fruit (ok maybe just 7-8). Even as a somewhat red-green colorblind guy, finding the fruit wasn't THAT difficult, but occasionally I kept circling around a tree to see if I missed any. 7th spoiler: Also I'm now thinking back to the first time I played Shadow of the Colossus and I can't recall how many I killed then. I thought it was only 4-5, but this one was definitely among them and at least one more that I haven't seen yet on this playthrough, so it must have been 8 or more. I don't remember completing it, though.
