Would probably have bought it now if it was cross-platform. Since I'm currently mostly using Linux I have to like, plan to boot into Windows and do stuff there. PS. I haven't used it very much yet, but so far Steam for Linux seems like a blessing. Surprisingly many games I want to play have Linux versions.

Idle Forums Game Club 2 - Shadow of the Colossus edition

Someone linked this in Twitter -- Eurogamer has an article about Shadow of the Colossus secret hunters. An interesting read, but maybe wait until you've finished (and then it still spoils the secrets, of course [which I personally never would find]) -
Well, then you could teach your colleagues to be better, maybe? Does your company have some kind of seminars where developers give talks/share knowledge? If not, make it happen.

I used to have similar thoughts. The solution was to find a better company to work for. I kept changing jobs whenever I found I wasn't learning much from others.

I just had an evil thought on how to commit more deletions of code than insertions (which is a generally a good thing -- thinking of lines of code as spent, not produced): ask other team members to write lots of comments and then every time you commit something, delete as many lines of their comments as you had to write new lines of code.

It's interesting that they say it feels more like Red Dead fast-forwarded to modern times than previous GTA games. If true, I will probably like it a lot.

I don't see many parallels with the Witcher from that trailer. The tone is totally different. I guess you play a monster hunter?

It's on Steam now. There's a blog post about the Greenlight process, which includes the following quote:

Indeed! That was one of the best things in that game.

maybe I'm dumb, but that seems dangerous -- letting those drops of water fly all over the place, with all those wires and instruments about. They must have thought of that and maybe everything is properly insulated, but my first instinct was still to worry about those drops.

PS I was being serious actually, and not referring to the "it’s a interactive thing on a video screen." I think somewhere in the discussion Steve made a very good argument about what should be considered a game - anything that requires player input to progress on conveying its meaning, or something like that.It was not the one sentence though, but the whole discussion around that that was interesting.

it’s a interactive thing on a video screen. - Steve Gaynor

Great interview, pabosher! You managed to get a conclusive answer to the question "what is game?" out of Steve (IMHO).

I tried this out and at first I couldn't even figure out how to attach a parachute. Have yet to get something to orbit. Probably need to watch some tutorials. What's up with the components sometimes not attaching to other components? e.g. I add a fuel tank to the nose thingie, take it apart and then can't put it back.

I got an iPad Mini recently and after that I use almost no apps on my iPhone, because the screen is so small. How did I ever manage to do most of my reading on an iPhone (using instapaper)??? Haven't actually tried Crosswords on the iPad, but should.
-
I use the Crosswords app on iOS. Much wider selection. The only ones I can solve there are UK-based Independent Concise, Manchester Eve. News and Puzzle Express. The US ones have too much US-specific stuff that I don't know nor want to know.

Decided to watch the latest one anyway. Yeah, at least some environments are spoiled. I will maybe watch a few more, or leave for later.
-
I wonder again if I should watch these episodes. I think the last one I saw was episode 4 or 5. I want to avoid even a slightest whiff of spoilage.

I'm assuming the horse bag will represent throwable game objects like couches?

I've playtested some board games and have had my own board game playtested. It's a difficult thing for sure. I find it more difficult when I'm the tester -- it's hard to come up with feedback that isn't "do this" or "do that" (that seems what I want to offer by default), but giving the designers problems to solve sounds like a better idea. With my own game I found some feedback form on a BG forum and modified it a bit, then asked the testers specific questions from that and wrote it down. Got some good suggestions, but even then it turned out that the game just wasn't for some players, and I can totally see how I could decide that "that person doesn't like games like this, I don't want his feedback any more". But actually what I took away from it that maybe the game wasn't as good as I thought and decided to redesign it somewhat (have been postponing that so maybe I just should have finalized the first version as more or less what I originally came up with and tried to get that published somehow).

Ok, so I finished a while ago, but I guess I've fallen behind with posting. 11th and 14th 12th 13th -
That space program was awesome. Also, sorry for correcting someone's spelling of Mun. Apparently that's what it's called in the game* * I thought it was some new coo spelling of Moon

I am going to be in San Fransisco or somewhere nearby as well, for a week at the end of July. I'm going to a conference in Santa Clara on the very last days of July, but decided to have a week off there before that. So I'll arrive on July 20th I think and then I have no idea what I'm going to do during the week (suggestions welcome). Would be nice to meet some fellow thumbs.

I'm also hoping that the setting will make them spawn a few orders of magnitude less dudes to kill. And I hope they will not spawn from all directions like in Uncharted.
