  1. Half-Life 3

Valve Complete Pack is on sale. That means Half-Life 3 coming out next week, right?
  2. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

This mashup of AVICII and Rick Astley is up there with the best mashups.
  3. Steam Curation!

Hmm... I added 30 games and now I want to curate my list so that some games would be more prominent than others. Instead they seem to be stuck with the order they were added in. Yeah, this needs better implementation.
  4. Steam Curation!

I started Games for Taffing About. For some reason it is showing only 3 games on the store page while I've added 10. Now I'm just trying to not come up with too many ways to say that every game I like contains some taffing about, otherwise it'll be just my favourite games. It'll have immersive sims and other cool first person games mostly, but I had to add Civ 5.
  5. Steam Curation!

Idle Thumbs exists already as a curator. So does Steve Gaynor, and I'm also following RPS.
  6. The 'Does this thread exist?' thread

Do we have a thread where we can ask for help with remembering the titles of movies seen 15 years ago?
  7. Spacebase!

I don't think this makes much sense, at least not as general advice -- wouldn't it make sense for other industries too then, as long as the work is not tied to a location. And then suddenly a whole lot of people should move to near-city areas, forming some humongous suburbia. Or if that should not happen in general, then why would game developers be different? People live where they live and they seem to want to be in cities. I guess in the US it's more common to move long distances for work than it is in Europe, but I assume at some point people still get attached to a place, which seems healthy. Indeed, that seems to be a problem, at least looking from the outside. Competition between companies should force them to pay a fair salary, but if a lot of people are willing to accept less, then why should they? We had a recent case here where a German company moved part of its software development to Estonia and offered way more than the usual salary to be able to hire a lot of devs quickly. We lost a couple of people to them, even as most people got a rather nice salary rise out of it -- they just forced other companies to raise salaries as well to keep good people. I would imagine it would work similarly in game dev, but on the other hand creative leaders and game projects may create a lot more emotional attachments than simple software.
  8. Life

    Great to hear, tegan
  9. Life

It seems to be just a visual/geometrical representation of some abstract idea about probability according to Feynman's view on quantum whatever
  10. Non-video games

Ah, Cyclades, only played it once, bought it at an auction recently, almost got people to play it today, but they wanted Tales of Arabian Nights instead (which was fun, though). I really must play it again soon. I never made the comparison to Game of Thrones myself, but in hindsight it seems obvious. And yet the rules are so much more simple -- it was amazing when I was reading the rules today morning to discover that they fit on 6 pages.
  11. Life

    Congrats Miffy!
  12. Wasteland 2

I've completely ignored the development, but also my gaming habits have changed completely since I backed it -- I now spend way less time on games, so I'm not sure if I'm going to play it. But since I have not yet started Divinity OS, maybe I'll play this before that.
  13. Far Cry 2

I've always thought that I might love something like that in a character-driven game (I forgot if there is a better term for this, I mean a game where you play a single character going through a story), but I think in reality it may turn out not to be that great because suddenly the game would be focused on doing two completely different things that may have a hard time supporting each other. E.g. what if you played a single character in Spacebase DF-9 -- it sounds cool as a sentence, but I bet it would not be an awesome action/adventure. Though some kind of mixes of this may end up good. I think Stalker Clear Sky tried to do something like that, but didn't really succeed? It's generally seen as the worst Stalker game and I still haven't played through it -- only a couple of hours of the beginning.
  14. Jeff Goldblum

What if Jeff Goldblum owned a drone company called "Jeff Goldblum Aerodynamics" and the drone control software/remote would have a clippy/buddy thing voiced by Jeff Goldblum. Their theme song would be Alec Eiffel. "Oh Jeffrey Lynn I see you beneath the archway of aerodynamics"
  15. Another World Windows

That wasn't even the oldest Another World thread, but it seemed the most fitting Some very old threads are locked for some reason (I guess database efficiency or something).
  16. Another World Windows

This classic has now made it onto Steam. There''s a Windows and Mac version I think. I couldn't resist buying although I already had the 15th anniversary edition.
  17. Far Cry 2

Another Idle Thumbs-compatible analysis of Far Cry 2 (no specific reason to post, was linked on RPS Sunday Papers and I think it was a good analysis)
  18. Feminism

The rapid exchange of ideas, such as must be behind the quick spread of feminism, could not be possible without the internet. Neither could the current mass-harrassments. Initially the ideas about the internet seemed to be idealistic, but when it got widespread enough it got assimilated into the real world. For me already the step from FidoNet to Internet somewhat signalled the end of a dream of a technology-led utopia, maybe because I was just the right age when that switch happened.
  19. There's also Recettear, a whole game about running an item shop. There should be a thread about it in this forum. [edit] added link to thread
  20. Movie/TV recommendations

The wikipedia entry for Palo Alto is weird
  21. Life

Tolkien actually recommended translating the names. After the first Dutch and Swedish translations he wrote a guide (PDF). There are more specific notes for some names, and for some names translators should use archaic words in their respective language. The Estonian translation handled all that pretty well, although it also translated names like Sam (Juss) and Baggins (Paunaste).
  22. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

La Lupe has become my favourite dead artist lately. It's amazing how much energy her recordings have, almost feels like I was listening to a live performance.
  23. It took me seven seconds to get that, but LOL!
  24. Hmmm.

I'm too lazy to games any more. Seriously, I just can't make the effort to start up a game that requires any brain activity any more. I want to play Original Sin, Kentucky Route Zero, Broken Age, Spacebase DF9, Hack & Slash, Fuck & Mash, Suck & Crash, Goat Simulator, whatever, but all I can play are Walking Dead episodes and now that option is gone as well
  25. Shaving My Thumbs

I've used (disposable) Gillette Blue 3 for 15 years after experimenting with other stuff. Electric shavers never seemed to work for me. I'm often too lazy to shave and let the beard grow for weeks or months without any care, then shave it off again. In that case I use scissors to cut it shorter before going for the razors. Almost any shaving cream seems to work for me, though I haven't tried a lot of different ones.
