If you're picky about colors there's some controversy over this so check the reviews. I didn't find anything odd, but I don't know what it's supposed to look like anyway.

Just got the new Ran Blu-Ray and watched it. Good movie with a solid horse count! And looks gorgeous in newly restored form -- a previous Blu-Ray rip I had glanced at was butt-ugly compared to this. (note: the trailer doesn't quite look as good as the Blu-Ray, though)

I'm now going through the movies shown on the FilmStruck sizzle reel (among others). Lady Snowblood is pretty cool -- a Japanese revenge flick full of beautiful fake blood and a bit* of mutilation. Probably was an inspiration for Kill Bill. * on the 4th minute an arm is cut off.

The camerawork was quite ok as far as I could tell, but at some point I stopped paying attention to it.

I've only seen a few Spike Lee movies. This one looks really good, but last time I tried to watch it I fell asleep from tiredness and didn't manage to continue in the next days. I think I will see it at one point, though, as I remember how good it looks each time I see the poster.

High-Rise is a roller coaster slow ride through a world where the Internet and personal computers were never invented, but there's a big surplus of concrete and real estate and everybody has a brain tumor. There's a really funny scene 2/3 in, but it may require watching some of the garbage that comes before to make it work. It's not bad on the whole, but not too good either. It's an experience, I guess.
  7. The Big VR Thread

How well does it work? Doesn't it feel weird when your character is constantly moving but you aren't?
  8. I Had A Random Thought...

There should be a "Wrong Movie Festival". It should probably show some of these movies: The Dark Knight (2011) Drive (1997) The Fast and the Furious (1955) Heat (1986) The Master (2004) Independence Day (1983)

Man with a Movie Camera (1929) is awesome and should be seen by everyone!
  10. The Big FPS Playthrough MISSION COMPLETE

Sad to hear Thief(s) didn't work out, but I totally understand. I have started and stopped playing Thief: Gold several times, at bonehoard, at the wizard's mansion, and I don't think I ever finished the Gold version, even though the first two Thieves are some of my favourite games. I have fonder memories of Thief II.
  11. Dark Souls(Demon's Souls successor)

I asked the ghost of Orson Welles what his opinion is, and this is what happened:

I guess it's different in the US (or for people willing to use VPNs) - you have Hulu, Netflix (and more?). Here I don't even know any service besides Mubi that provides quality content. Netflix just opened this year but here it has maybe 10-20 movies I'd watch, and some TV shows. Local TV/net providers show movies in horribly compressed form. So I'm really glad if a quality movie service that could be international comes along. Personally I also don't think paying for some general subscription a la steam would be better for movies. Well, besides that every service needing their own app and not having it for your device would be annoying. I hope there be a Kodi plugin.

This is a potentially awesome thing: Criterion and TCM making a cinefile streaming service. Will have a wider selection at a time than Mubi, and I hope it will be internationally accessible. If not, then I will feel stupid for putting into conveniet Letterboxd list form all films that appeared on their sizzle reel, which I plan to watch before they launch.

It's on my (admittedly 450+ long and growing) watchlist!

I think I may be becoming as obsessed with Chimes at Midnight as I was with Mad Max: Fury Road last year. I just watched the Mr Bongo* blu-ray version because I just couldn't wait for the Janus Films restoration to become available. It's such a masterpiece. The first time I kind of half-dismissed it because I was so not used to Shakespearean dialogue that it made the film hard to follow, but once I accepted that all the dialogue here is written by the bard and in that old style, I just tried my best to read it, and it became a real work of brilliance. * Well, it is HD quality, but it kind of sucks. The black and grey levels are awful, the sound keeps popping, and on some occasions is out of sync, but the latter may not even be fixable as far as I know. Anyway, the Janus Films trailer suggests that the new restoration is going to be awesome.

I've seen some movies. Grave of the Fireflies - I've never cried so much before. Also, during the movie, after perhaps the saddest part, I got a call that a relative of mine had died, so I cried even more. Apu Trilogy - these are great and I would recommend to everyone. I think the last one is most regarded, but I really loved the first one. The "Dead Mountaineer" Hotel - kind of sci-fi/neo-noir set in the midst of snow, it's an Estonian movie based on a Strugatskies' book. It isn't bad, but doesn't quite fulfill its promise. Worth seeing just for the amazing prog-rock/electronic score. You may try watching it with auto-transalated subtitles on YT: Woman in the Dunes - a really unique and interesting slow thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane - a good movie. I liked the ending, in spite of being warned that the last 15 minutes would suck. Wages of Fear - amazing pace Come and See - this is the most devastating movie about war from the perspective of a teenage boy who enlists
  17. The Witness by Jonathan Blow

Maybe it's just my perception (because I am paying less attention to games press than years ago), but has The Witness failed to provoke similar level of response as Braid did years ago? It seemed like Blow was hoping for more? I guess it's somewhat expected since Braid happened at the start of the indie games movement, but now there are countless of games coming out all the time.
  18. Another Red Redemption, Dead

Yeah, the zombie DLC is actually pretty good. The first time I tried it I was put off as well, but I tried again later and started liking it.

It seemed more impressive that day when I saw it in IMAX, but when I try to remember the overall feeling of it, yeah, it's tedious, and I think in the end it will be rather forgettable.
  20. The only game in this series I've played a bit is Dark Souls -- and for 1 hour only. Given that I don't spend that much time gaming these days and will not likely play through the whole series at this point, but I just upgraded my PC and now want to post-justify that upgrade, would you recommend that I start playing Dark Souls 3 instead of Dark Souls?
  21. I've changed the motherboard at least once before. PS. So I've now probably got a really good computer for playing games... But I didn't really upgrade with any specific purpose in mind -- I was just having a lot of problems with the old MoBo and generally thought it would be good to be more ready for HTC Vive the moment I can order/buy one. But I'm actually getting really estranged from playing games nowadays. Of course I played The Witness and Firewatch because I had been looking forward to them for years, but I just can't get excited about new games easily. I've liked trying out some new games for half an hour or an hour, but they just don't hold my interest that long. Is there currently something amazing that I just have to try that can take advantage of the computing power I now have? Maybe I should just play the Witcher 3 expansion?

Holy shit, the Parks & Recreation Season 6 finale is one of the most amazing moments in any TV series I've seen. I actually cried several times.
  23. I started having more and more troubles with my PC after adding more disks, so I decided to do a more complete upgrade now since my CPU was from 2011 IIRC (i7 2600 or something) and have to prepare for VR anyway. I have GTX 970 so I'll leave that for now, but I changed mobo to Gigabyte Z170X-Gaming 7 and CPU to i7 6700K, and DDR4 ram. So far seems a good bit faster, but I haven't tried any games yet. However, why I posted is that I am quite happy that this is probably the 4th major upgrade I've done on this machine, with the same Windows license (initially was Windows 7, now running Windows 10), and I've never had any activation problems. So maybe it's that if you change just enough components, windows doesn't consider it a new computer.
