  1. Hard disk fail

Yeah, I tried pluggin back to the old PC, which has sata 1.5Gb/s I think. By SATA 3 I mean SATA rev 3.I've had a few hard disk failures before, where usually some software recovery was possible, using programs on boot cd's. But it really seems like this time there isn't. Every read to the disk is so slow that I can't even imagine how long it would take to fix something there. And it'll probably do more harm.
  2. Hard disk fail

I tried some utilities from Ultimate Boot CD, but it indicated a hardware failure according to my friend. It will cost 350€ to recover data (if it goes well). I think I'm going to swallow it as the cost of not making backups for 10 years. And I'm going to start making backups. Code to github private account maybe, documents to DropBox or something like that. And maybe I'll build a new Linux storage server like Toblix did, the previous one I had even had a RAID but it failed after I did a distro upgrade.
  3. Buying a New PC

Hmm.. maybe you're right. I tried another disk that is the same model, but I didn't put that into SATA 3, I think. I put it into the SATA 2 port (but those can fail on my motherboard). Anyway, the disk is probably not software recoverable any more (that's what my friend told me, when I told hime I can't turn on the SMART any more) and I'll have to see if I can recover some data for large amounts of money.
  4. Buying a New PC

Hmm... booting from an ubuntu CD now, but it's really slow, everything seems to hang whenever that disk is plugged in. I have some identical drives that are currently unused, I wonder if I could swap the electronics...
  5. Buying a New PC

Yay! I got a hard disk failure after I moved my Hard disk from the old machine to the new one. And since I have the chipset with the SATA problems, I even made sure to put it into the working SATA 3 port. Windows started to hang after installing drivers for it and restarting. Now when I put it back to the old system, it fails to boot and somewhy shows SMART Capabilities: None (although I know it had them before ). I guess my best chance is to boot from some Linux CD to see if I can still read it somehow? Luckily I had moved the most crucial data (e-mail archive starting from 1997 and save games hehe ) before on a memory stick, but there's still a lot of source code on there for which I have no backups naturally
  6. Desura, Steam like for mods

I installed it recently for a Half-Life 2 mod (Dissolution), but haven't played the mod yet. Looks useful, but the buttons and interface are somewhat confusing. For example, you click "Play" to install the thing. Would be nice if it would support more games (I guess that's coming probably). I have a mind for playing some Stalker mods.
  7. Or you could hit it with a big sledgehammer before you take it to the point blanc. That's what I would do. Will they still take it?
  8. Minecraft

Yeah, amazing videos. I haven't palyed Minecraft for a while now, but the bed update might bring me back to it. [edit] Or rather, the second bed update, which is supposed to come in a month? Which makes you respawn near your last bed after you die.
  9. (Unconfirmed)Telltale tackles.. KING'S QUEST?

Yeah, I was almost going to post something like that in the other thread about Walking Dead and whatever. I don't know any of these new properties they're tackling (well I've played King's Quest VI [might be wrong about the numeral]) and am not that interested at first, but I do fear this is going to bring quality down in all of their games, and single handedly kill the adventure genre, of course.
  10. Open Outcast

Holy crap. http://www.openoutcast.org/ http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/02/18/mama-were-all-voxely-now-open-outcast/ I think there have been several failed community attempts to recreate Outcast as a mod for another game but looks like this one might be getting somewhere.
  11. Metro 2033?

This is better than I expected from what little I played earlier. When I was first left alone outside it felt scary, because so far I had been lead and now I was in this new place, exposed compared to the tunnels and not knowing exactly how to achieve my goal. There's a nice balance of wanting to scrounge ammo and stuff and wanting to just run to the next safe place before more monsters come or the gas filters expire.
  12. V The Elder Scrolls

I was like that about Portal 2 but then I went into full want to know nothing about it mode. Don't know how I did it, I guess I just watched some gameplay videos and felt they were too spoiling and stopped watching. Maybe if you watch that screenshot video over and over again, it'll help...
  13. Open Outcast

Yeah, that is what I'm afraid of -- it'll look like Outcast, even sound like Outcast, and somewhat play like Outcast, but it'll have these stupid plots and writing where every third line makes a wink towards the original game. About the other areas, that was not my concern, just that I was expecting more gameplay there and was disappointed to not see any.
  14. Obligatory comical YouTube thread

It reminded me of Darren Hanlon. If you liked that, maybe you('ll) like him too. g-HEWb0eeRw sorry for offtopicness
  15. Buying a New PC

It's also got an amazing airflow apparently. The CPU temperature has dropped to 17 degrees celsius. Yesterday I thought I was imagining it, but now I'm almost sure that it's making my room colder. Which would be nice in the summer, but it's -20 outside for god's sake. [edit] As this thing seems so easy to keep cool, I kind of already regret not getting the overclockable i7 2600K. On the other hand, I never overclocked my old system.
  16. V The Elder Scrolls

    Ooh, a video... http://www.gametrailers.com/video/first-look-elder-scrolls/710616
  17. Open Outcast

So I played it but the gameplay and plot is still kind of crappy. And Okasankaar, which was missing from the earlier demo, looks nice but it's just an island with the city in the background, no gameplay besides a few dialog lines. I hope this really is meant as a tech demo, not an indicator of what the game is going to be like if they manage to finish it.
  18. Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday! I wish you the cake is not a lie!
  19. Metro 2033?

Woo! I can finally play this. My old computer couldn't handle it at all, but now I'm running with maxed settings. Granted, my monitor only goes up to 1280x1024.

Somebody really wants Stephen Fry's baby 7n_hkeYGcT0
  21. Buying a New PC

I built it myself, and I must say the Cooler Master HAF 932 case is really good for building. It's big, but there's plenty of room for everything and good places for wires and stuff. And hard drives, DVD-writers and such are easy to install. Most things can be installed without screws. I noticed too late that it doesn't have USB3.0 in the front, but I don't care that much, I guess.
  22. Buying a New PC

Well, if you are for example a (Java) programmer like me, and work on things like server side software, Eclipse plug-ins etc. you might have multiple servers running, multiple Eclipses running. Each one probably likes to have up to 1GB of memory (sometimes less, sometimes more). And since the graphics card also wants some memory from the system RAM, and firefox wants some too, 4GB doesn't leave for much else. I know I asked before if more than 4 was necessary but I wasn't thinking properly - in my case it is. It's just that I'm so used to having only 2.
  23. Buying a New PC

Posting this from my new PC! Ended up getting GTX 570 for the video. This must be some kind of personal record - took me less than 48 hours from the decision to finally upgrade to a running system.
  24. So.. Batman: Arkham Asylum

    It sure helped, thanks.
  25. Open Outcast

Hmm, don't know about that. Somebody probably still owns that IP?
