  1. Maybe developers will move away from publishers and try more self-publishing methods like Valve with Steam. That way they make 3 times as much money from each copy sold, balancing out ballooning piracy.

...but I guess people will think "if I'm downloading the game already I might as well click over to suprnova and get it for free".

  2. Basically console gaming is for playing exclusive games, or games made in Japan (since PC development there is virtually non-existant). If you have no interest in the console exclusives, there really is no reason to get one.

...those damn metal gear games always sucker me though.

  3. Basically most PCs on the market now would be able to play it, even the sloppy GeForce 4 MX could play this game. But if you're looking into a specific video card, an ATI Radeon 9600Pro would easily have you covered on Doom 3 (on medium settings) and Half-Life 2 (on high settings), and you can get one for around $90, maybe less if you find a deal or are willing to buy one used. The idea that only a $400 behemoth video card can play newer games is a complete load of shit. The differences in quality in Doom 3 from med to high and high to ultra are hardly discernable, even in side by side comparisons...so any DX9 videocard will be good enough.

  4. Your words make me very afraid since it is your words we're talking about.
    :erm: ...I don't understand.

Anyway, Hl2 may very well be better, but its not out yet so no one knows. And while Doom 3 does consist mostly of corridors you shouldn't be too worried about a lack of action. Even one imp in Doom 3 is more tense and frantic than the monster filled rooms of doom 1 or 2. And there are occasions where 6 or 7 assorted monsters attack you from all sides in a fairly large room....but its not ridiculous like the BFG levels in Doom 2 (atleast not yet).

IH is absolutely right. The atmosphere is everything in Doom 3. You will peeking around every corner with your flashlight, not running through the levels as quickly as possible to the exit door. Its more like System Shock 2 than Doom in its pacing, but is a much better game because of it.

  5. I'd say Metal Slug (the game it rips off of 100%) is better, but those games don't come out often, so I'm looking forward to it. I hope its more forgiving than the flash version though, the game is pretty hard.

  6. Well after playing Doom 3 for about 10 hours, I must say its much better than I though it would be gameplay-wise. Its got a real system-shock 2 vibe, from the voice and video logs to the sound design. The graphics are obviously amazing, and I expected as much from the beta and screenshots.

What really suprised me though is how well it ran on my computer. If you're afraid of buying (or downloading the massive file) because of your computer, you should probably risk it. Even if you run on the low 640x480 settings, it is miles ahead of any game I've played graphically. Its the best FPS since half-life, try it out.

  7. MMO Fighting games would be a natural progression for the fighter genre...but it doesn't have much to do with the Shenmue story line or characters, does it? Thats not really a problem, the games weren't that great anyway.

  8. Oh man, I love Pikmin. I'm counting the days until Pikmin 2.

No kidding, Pikmin is one of the best game concepts going today...I too can't wait for the sequel. Too bad the game was basically ignored because your killer minions are flower-children (the irony!). Its great when you fan out your legion over a field of cadavers and they hoist them back to their pods, it gives you a real feeling of accomplishment.

It seems that the new additions are kind of superfluous though...sumo pikmin, poison pikmin? I have enough problems keeping the yellow ones from blowing my own army to oblivion, the last thing I need is chemical clouds wafting around during a battle.

  9. Sonic was ass from the beginning. Although I love the era and the system, really all sonic had was speed gimmick, its other machanics were pretty sloppy. Sega has really taken a dive either way though, and all of their good developers (like Yu Suzuki) left after they were swallowed by the pachinko-loving Sammy.

But with the death of Sega comes the birth of a slew of new development houses lead by the best of the old Sega team. Supposedly there is an unofficial-but-obvious REZ sequel in production!

  10. Getting back to the original point, I think after developers invest loads of time in the engine, graphics, and voice acting for one episode, they would be afraid of the first 'episode' of the game failing. Because a game's most expensive parts are in the basic game programming, visuals, and sound.

The first episode would then cost more than concurrent releases because of the huge price difference. For them to break even on failure the first episode might cost 25$, and by that point it might make more sense to just go in full-on.

  11. Nintendo is great, its seems like the only large company that doesn't strive to make the next 'adult themed' game, and instead just make fun games with bright colors and crazy character designs.

Granted, it milks its franchises quite a bit, and doesn't change the games too much in between iterations...but if the games are awesome every time why bother?

And another thing about Nintendo games, they give that warm feeling inside. When you play a game like GTA you just look at it and see a team has created an effective money machine, any kind of individual input or innovation has been blurred into the dreary slop...a game that would rather push half-hearted movie cliches into your face then make you smile. Nintendo games are much more personal. There are other developers out there, but none as large as nintendo.

  12. I like how lucasarts has the unique logo animation for most every game...the problem is that the game after the logo usually sucks, but back when they were a decent company I really liked the logos.

As for good openings not mentioned above, ICO has a really great opening, if you've played the game you know what i mean. That game was just spectacular all-around.

I liked the opening cutscene of Armed and Dangerous too, it was quite funny.

  13. I agree about the going back to the suit style. The 20's was kind of like the peak of design in buildings and cars and what not (in my opinion, except for some terrible art deco houses), so I think people knew wat they were doing when the all wore hats. Sadly, if you wear a hat around like that today you'd just get the stink eye unless you were 50 or older...damn democrats.

  14. It got a 94% from PC gamer, so its not going to suck. Unless they were paid off.

But if you look at Id's track record, although none of the games were story telling master-pieces they all looked fucking great when released and they were all very fun to play. I'm guessing thats how Doom 3 will be too.
