Hah! I was thinking about watching that but I decided to watch Carlito's Way instead that was on another channel. I think I made a good choice. Propably the original 3:10 to Yuma is much better than that remake with Bale and Crowe.

A Rudimentary Poll: PC or Consoles and your gaming background
Kolzig replied to Squid Division's topic in Video Gaming
My start came briefly with my brother's Commodore Vic 20 when I was about five years old, but soon started to really flourish when my brother got a Commodore 128. After that came Commodore Amiga which I loved very much, actually I kept the Amiga much more closer to my heart than C64/128. Amiga was personal for me as that I kind of inherited from my brother who quit gaming completely during the Amiga years even though he had programmed stuff himself in his youth, he also has never returned to gaming as he just isn't interested anymore. I remember showing him once briefly Hidden&Dangerous around about 10 years ago? He said, "can games do all that these days?" He couldn't basically believe his eyes. After the Amiga started dying everywhere except in the demo scene, I sold it and I bought an old overpriced 486DX 33Mhz computer with 8MB ram from my dad's friend with my own money that I got from the Amiga sale, it was pretty sweet as I got a ton of money from the Amiga from some Eastern Finland guy that came all the way hundreds of kilometers to buy the beloved Amiga away from me. That was the deal, my dad and mom said I have to sell the old one to buy other one and I did it all with my money. That brought me to PC gaming that I had otherwise only seen at one friend's place every week while playing Jones in the Fast Lane, Gold of the Americas, Theme Park, Syndicate, Little Big Adventure and various EA NHL titles from the first NHL Hockey all the way to NHL96. Also many other titles were gone through during this period. The second PC I got as present from my dad for unknown reasons, it was overpriced and already not supernew model, but it cost like a new one because it was a Compaq. That computer was the one where I could buy a few years later a Voodoo first generation 3D card some years that brought a whole new way to play games back then. It was pretty much PC after this as I have now my basically 5th PC. PC introduced me to the best age of LucasArts, Sierra and Revolution adventure games. Also Indycar Racing 2 from Papyrus gets a special mention here. Worked perfectly on my first PC. 1) 486DX 33mhz 2) Pentium 200Mhz from Compaq 3) AMD Athlon something that I don't even remember anymore 4) AMD Athlon64 +3500 5) The current dual core rig. Somewhere around the time I got my first PC I also got as a present Sega Megadrive II which I had wanted for a few years already, but as my family isn't superrich I had to be patient to get what I wanted. Megadrive was a much loved gaming machine even though I didn't have many games, the console games cost around 100€ per game at that time if you were to translate marks to euros straight even though the value is not the same now as it was then. I think all my games were used games, because we used to have a shop in town that exchanged games. That died when Playstation, Saturn and N64 came. Somehow the market just wasn't the same as it was during SNES/Megadrive period. I played Sonic 2 so much and I was so happy about my parents for getting me that console. I was pretty much 100% Sega supporter back then. I didn't like Nintendo at all. I didn't get Saturn or Dreamcast however until I got my own money and hunted both machines from auctions for cheap price alongside with the horrible 32X. I wanted to have big Sega collection. After Sega's disappearance from the hardware market, I turned my attention slowly towards Nintendo, the company that I never liked when I was a kid. Then became the Nintendo age with the first portable console for me: GBA, DS and my current DS lite. Finally 1,5 years ago the first non-Sega home console Wii came to my possession. These days my gaming is most likely 70/30 for Wii against the PC with the occasional DS gaming thrown in somewhere. Next year I would expect 3DS to conquer shares from one of the other platforms. The reason why my PC gaming is so low is because my wife is pretty much hogging the PC for herself for studies and stuff these days so I'm focusing more on Wii. I love PC gaming, there's no question about that. If I will someday come to my senses, I will quit my boring accountant job and take job at some company where I can tweak and build computers, like a repair shop or something. That's where I would be happy. Interesting remark is that I still have that Vic 20 in my closet, it has travelled with me for around 24 years and hopefully it is still working. I haven't used it in ages. -
Couldn't find another thread so I'm using this. id announced at Quakecon 2010 that Rage is coming out for the iPhone 4. Apparently first on this magical Apple platform later this year and then the actual game versions next year for PC and the consoles. That's some wicked coding to get that game to work on iPhone, but I would think it's heavily downgraded and limited version from the main product that comes out next year.

I read the RPS article, but my feelings are still the same as before... The Big Daddy looking enemy that throws the main character out of the window reminds me of Krang.

I went to see The Expendables yesterday at the local theater. I was disappointed to see that in addition to my friends there was only about 15 other people there. This might have been because my town had the "Night of the Arts" yesterday until night and there were propably 50000 people there running around. The movie was pretty much what I expected so I got what I paid for. I liked it a lot in the way that it was exactly what it promised to be. The only thing missing from this movie would've been Van Damme, Seagal, Snipes and Chuck Norris, but those guys are lost causes. Especially Norris these days. Stallone tried to get all of them except Norris to show up in the movie, but ultimately failed because of various reasons relating to the said actors.

Well fuck it then, I was hoping for something that will blow my mind as in something new and not a sequel. But in the end it is just Bioshock 3, in the sky. Nice trailer, but holy shit that was a huge letdown. I never wanted Bioshock to have any sequels as it worked amazingly as it's own game. EDIT: The trailer is actually more than nice, it's very cool except for the revelation that this is Bioshock sequel. It's not just the title, but when I saw the Big Daddy etc. I had a meh feeling. I haven't read the RPS etc. stuff yet, but I'm going to do that next.

For me Duke is something like The Expendables. A chance to visit the past one more time and see stuff that was cool in my youth in games and movies. Duke 2's intro is very memorable for me and Duke3D was amazing in 1996 with many groundbreaking aspects so there is that thought in my head that "come on Duke, one more time." If it turns out to be true that it's coming out and even if it was a bad game, I would most likely buy it. I just want to play a Duke game one more time. I wonder what kind of role sTeve "Shack" Gibson has at Gearbox?

I don't think it's a flight sim, but what's stopping them. The market changes when someone makes a flight sim that people will play, then after that many will start making flight sims like now everyone seem to be making fps after fps now. You just need someone brave enough to spearhead the change to make something new. But on a serious note I had no idea until yesterday that Chris left San Francisco and Gamasutra and that Idle Thumbs podcast is propably doomed now that the guys are basically all around the US? I blame this on my vacation, even though I've been three weeks back now, I'm still not completely updated on stuff as I'm at the moment going through podcast #9. So still 3,5 podcasts to go to reach the current situation. Feels like I've entered the Outer Limits or something. I also blame the shitty Twitter because way too much news circle around that these days. But seriously Ken Levine, Shawn Elliott, Chris Remo and all the other highly talented people at Irrational in the same team. Mind explosion. I hope whatever Chris' tasks will be, that he will be succesful. I hope writing/music duties are in the future for him.

During my trip to Japan I played through three mobile phone games. Doom RPG by Fountainhead Studios that is now part of id Mobile division. Orcs & Elves II by the same Fountainhead Studios Edge by Mobigame. Yes, this is the famous game that has been haunted by Tim Langdell and his idiotic copyright lawsuits. All these were played on Nokia S60 platform on Nokia E51 phone, so screen is tiny, but the games were great! Doom RPG I've wanted to play for years and it took me about six hours in total. Very nice game and it felt like mixture of Doom, Doom II and Doom³. Orcs & Elves II I finished in 3h 15min. It was quite surprisingly short game, I played the original much longer on my DS couple of years ago, though the DS version was enhanced version of the original of course. Edge was awesome, I got that for free from Nokia Ovi Store. They had it on display for awhile for free and now it costs 3€. This game works so nicely, the later levels are superchallenging and took a lot of time and deaths to finish. My wife played this on a touchscreen Nokia phone and the game play was very different with the gyro than when using the directional pad. I've always felt that I don't want to use multiple download services. I've chosen Steam, but GOG seems to have so much good stuff like Blood games there. Is it worth it to take the jump to the unknown someday and start using also GOG and not only Steam? Steam has more new games and not so much golden oldies, but GOG seems to have all kinds of stuff and the prices are certainly not bad?

I read that end first (including Metallus and tabacco, who don't post around here much anymore but do exist, and would probably eat worms.)

This is then the first of the four projects under development at Doublefine. It will be interesting to see how this will develop as it's now the first project made public that is not lead by Tim. I hope he is not shifting permanently into a kind of background guy just managing the company. That would be a dream if Ron and Tim made a game together after all these years. Shame that there is no Steam release.

I got the demo of Mafia II dl'd through Steam, I have test it out in the next few days. Very excited about this, I remember lots of good memories about the first one, but that might be just my memory making silver linings on things that were not that good actually. The car driving was pain always.

Someone in the Shack comments posted a link to Kotaku: http://kotaku.com/5609770/rumor-borderlands-studio-reviving-duke-nukem-forever I hope this will be true and not some bogus news posting.

Duke might be alive again. Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle goes to my radar even more now.

I actually played the Edge game for mobile phones that he suid Mobigame about. It was pretty great and I got it for free from the Nokia Ovi store. Now it's 3€ there. I played it through during my trip to Japan. But from what I've read this Langdell guy is pretty pathetic. I don't know what is it with people who try to squeeze money out of other people's creations with trademark lawsuits that don't make any sense.

Will be great to see this in action. I hope that the great voice actors (Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill etc.) will still return. Paul Dini is handling the story again I guess?

Oh yes! Jones in The Fast Lane. One of the two most classic PC games of my youth. I played this every week after school with one friend for years and years. Still today when we meet we usually try to find time for one more go at Jones. It's as special to me as Gold of the Americas: The Conquest of the New World is. That's another game we played million hours.

I haven't followed up the Limbo game project in years, shame that's it not out on PC. Would love to try it out.

Lets see, crazy hopes that Hocking will bring a new age to Lucasarts.

I remember reading somewhere years ago that parts of the Warcraft Adventures story was used in Warcraft 3? Was Warcraft Adventures actually developed in-house at Blizzard or was it one of those projects that was mainly developed by a 3rd party group?

Oh hell, I really need to get back to Far Cry 2, I've spent the whole spring and summer doing other stuff...

Yakuza 3, the closest thing you'll get to Shenmue 3?
Kolzig replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Video Gaming
I've always concidered Yakuza to be spiritual sequel to Shenmue series. Shame that the series is only out on PS3 so it will propably stay out of my reach forever like Katamari, Ico and Shadow and the Colossus do. It looks very interesting and deep, I saw that the series is huge in Japan. Quite a lot of advertising in many places. -
I don't want to watch the new videos anymore. I feel I'm getting spoiled too much! I'll happily have a total news blackout concerning Portal 2 until it's released.

My wife bought used Japanese version of Picross during our summer vacation and she has been playing it now EVERY evening since we came back. Serious addiction there. I need to buy her the 3D version too I guess. I have tried the original out as well and it's really addictive, I totally understand why she can't keep her hands away from Picross.

I should rewatch it at some point. I have all the "Watcher's diary" dvd box versions bought, but I haven't watched Angel at all since the series came to the unfortunate end. This show is VERY underrated like ThunderPeel said. Oh hell yes! I can't wait for that to start, I have not seen the trailer, but I think the new season starts in september, right? Well, in Finland all movies cost around 9-12 euros these days. 8,90€ if it's a normal movie, then if it's supposed to be a hit then it's 10,90€ and if it's a 3D movie they rob you of 12,50 euros. In Japan the Inception IMAX / "executive seats" cost about 15-20 euros I think. The thing I find interesting that you can drink beer in the movie theater in the Netherlands? That's not possible here. I heard something just a few days ago that Beavis&Butt-Head might be coming back to MTV with new episodes from Mike Judge. Now that is a blast from the past. I thought MTV shows only reality crap these days? I wanted to see Toy Story 3 in Three Dee in IMAX in Japan, but they only had the Japanese dub so in the end we watched only Inception in IMAX. It was the first IMAX experience for me and my wife. IMAX is so cool and the movie was awesome as well! I'm really disappointed that we still don't have even one IMAX theater setup in the whole Finland! The whole idea how Chris Nolan made the dreams with dreams was really great. C.Nolan never disappoints, he is seriously one my most favourite directors. I especially thank him for saying that 3D in movies is useless and just a gimmick and that he will never use it. I'm not a Leo di Caprio fan, but he also did a nice job playing the lead role in my opinion. Ken Watanabe was really big on pushing this movie in Japan, every day there was a commercial with him talking about it in tv. Also before the movie there was Ken Watanabe clip about him thanking the people to come watch movie and hoping that everyone will enjoy it. A very classy guy. Also in an interview in Japan Leo di Caprio said with his whiny voice:"Ken Watanabe should be a national treasure!" That was so funny, my wife was imitating Leo for days when we saw that. I got maybe way too much a Batman vibe from Hans Zimmer's musics. We also watched Predators, but that was so bad. The same level of bad as Alien vs. Predator movies. Makes me wish that someone would make a Predator movie that was as cool as the first one with Arnold. It was a waste of money and time to go see that. Toy Story 3 we will go see at the end of the month when it finally comes to Finland. Next week I will go see the movie that truly is the movie of the year, maybe even the movie of the decade. That is of course THE EXPENDABLES. I'm so damn excited already, I can't wait for next week to see that on the big screen!
