  1. Fucking PC gaming!

I found this from random forum, this doesn't help with my issue, but should help with the graphical problems:
  2. Ico & Shadow of the Colossus HD

The little I know is that Fumito Ueda is supposed to be behind the high resolution version, so quality should be high unless the budget given to his team is on the level a shoestring budget? Ahh, these two and the original Katamari are the only reasons why I would like to own a PS2.
  3. PC purchasing advice

I have a Radeon 5770 1GB card also and I've been really impressed and satisfied with using that. It's a good choice for games that are out now and for big games that come out next year and so on.
  4. Metroid: Other M

I'm planning to play it, but I'm in the middle of Red Steel 1 & 2 right now for Wii. So time to play Metroid Other M will come, but I just need to try and do things in order now. I've heard and read lots of good news about the game so I'm pretty excited to get to play it at some point. I'm not exactly a hardcore Metroid player as previously I've only played the two GBA Metroid games and Metroid Prime: Hunters for DS. I've only once tried out Metroid Prime at a friend's place. I've never even played Super Metroid which is a shame. That is also on my list for the future. I have a good feeling about the game, I like the idea to go away from the FPS gaming and back to the roots Metroid series as "a sideways scroller" even though it's not exactly like that I think. I liked all the commercials for Metroid: Other M and it's been really funny to follow the internet's reaction that "Nintendo is copying Microsoft/Sony/whatever by making live action commercial for their game" even though Nintendo did live action commercials about Metroid already in the beginning of 90's. I watched from the European Nintendo channel the about 20 minute long video discussion from the developers, it gave a lot of information why they chose to do things like they did in Metroid: Other M. The story video for Metroid: Other M that was released a few weeks ago was also really cool. As I haven't played the game I don't really know about the voice acting, but at least in the videos the actress voicing Samus seems ok enough.
  5. Just Cause 2

I tried out the demo finally yesterday from Steam and holy shit the main character in this game is the best portrayal of "Video Game Asshole" I've seen ever. Even more than the Space Asshole. The game seems to be totally insane from what I experienced in the demo, it's just non stop insanity, but holy crap I can't stop blowing stuff up, flying with a gas canister up in the air and then air gliding the Video Game Asshole to his death. Propably one of the best time waster sandbox games ever. It ain't a proper game with a story, it's just a hilarious destruction game. This game would give IGN a million chances to make quotes. What was the first game like, I never even knew there was something like that?
  6. Awesome cast from beginning to the end. The questions to idlethumbs.net part was weird. Sean's ending was perfect, really great tale from the wonderland of Far Cry 2. I really would've wanted to be there. Hopefully you guys can get the video also posted somewhere, I really want to see all that stuff with my eyes. It was so awkwardly funny moment when Nick threw the water at Jake. I was laughing so much when Nick realized that there was water in the cup. It was like a wizard's test to see if Jake is a witch or a wizard. Turns out, Jake is a motherfuckin' Wizard.
  7. Fucking PC gaming!

I've been trying to get the copy of Beyond Good & Evil to work in Steam because I bought a copy when it was for five euros during summer and I can't get it to work. Is this a common problem with the game that it keeps telling me that "the video card drivers are not up to date" even though I have the latest ATI drivers? Also after that it throws some Direct3D error on the screen. I have installed some package from Microsoft for older DirectX dll's that the later drivers for Win7 apparently didn't have anymore. Fooking PC gaming, I should just hunt this down for Gamecube and play it with Wii.
  8. Listened to the cast finally yesterday. What a weird ending... Today and listened to the last PAX cast, laughing so god damn much all the time to the good stuff you guys bring up in the casts always. Hey sad to see it go, but I'm sure this won't be the end. Thumbs is traditionally going low sometimes and then when the time is right, the Idle T returns in one form or another. Too bad I really don't have any other good casts to listen to, except the Irrational casts that seem to come even less these days after the Chris Remo's Icarus announcement. Congrats to Chris, nice to hear about the new position and hope all goes great on the new adventures on east coast! By the way, doesn't Nick have a similar position at Bethesda?
  9. Minecraft

I think the account debacle is now settled and the problems solved. This game has totally escaped my attention. I need to tell some friends about this.
  10. Happy Birthday!

    Happy Birthday Chris!
  11. Life

Yes, I'm a bit scared if I one day move to Japan. I think I don't want to work there. I could live there, but not work. People have way too crazy ways of working there. I don't want to come home 9pm in the evening every day and just come to sleep at home and go back to work immediately when I wake up. I would have to do that in a Japanese accounting job. Well, Finland is like so that you can buy was it max 4,5% from regular shops and everything above that only from the govermental shop. Those close 8pm and on saturdays at 6pm. So yeah the Nordic culture is a bit different in alcohol sales when compared to many other countries.
  12. Recently completed video games

Finally finished something, I had for a year(?) on loan from a friend Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. Took me about 19 hours to finish the game, I finished only one of the endings with the green alignment Xel'lotath. Apparently I would need to finish it with the two other alignments to get a *real* ending, but I'm satisfied with just one ending. It's time to return this to my friend. It was quite a nice game, graphically it's not really pushing everything that Gamecube got, but that was mostly because of the N64 roots that the game had. It was quite a surprise to see that the game had top quality voice acting with the likes of David "Solid Snake" Hayter, Earl "LeChuck" Boen and Jennifer Hale. This is actually Hayter's only listed role outside of being Solid Snake in games. The idea about the insanity meter was absolutely awesome, I don't think I've seen that in any other games that I've played. There were so many wtf moments because of the insanity creeping in that I was scared shitless sometimes because it all happened so quickly and suddenly.
  13. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Yes, that was quite a shock to wake up in the morning and read that first in the news. My wife is pretty depressed about this, she met Portnoy and Dream Theater many times at her former job in a music store in Shinjuku. Even went to their gigs many times, once on backstage as VIP guest. She really likes Dream Theater's music and said during the morning that DT is over now, they shouldn't use the name anymore as Portnoy's dad named the band and Portnoy is the founding member. Such is life, but propably in years to come there will be some oh surprise, surprise reunion tour. Lets see if he now joins Avenged Sevenfold, couldn't care less for their music.
  14. Toonstruck... 2?!

Signed the petition week or two ago. I think this was in Mixnmojo earlier.
  15. Video games

I've had mixed feelings about gaming since 2006. That was a kind of weird wake up year. Not much has changed since then except I play games a lot less than before that. I haven't even sold my old collection away like I was supposed to. Everything is still gathering dust in the closet. A few years ago I had strong feelings of just getting out of gaming completely, but I never did. I do still follow up on stuff almost too intensively these days. About two years ago I had actually plans to never upgrade my desktop and just sell it away and get a laptop, but going to present day I have upgraded my computer during this year's spring after five years of not doing anything except once buying a graphics card. I have not bought a laptop. DS I don't play that much anymore except when I go on out of town trips like during my summer vacation I was hammering Picross always when I had spare time and absolutely nothing else to do. Wii I don't play that much, but when I at some point buy the four important Mario games, then I'm going in to happyland again. On PC I have a lot of old backlog, but not that much interest in clearing all that. One big concern is that there are way too many FPS games these days and not that many other games that really stand up. That's why I really like the indie games scene. Those are the shining light in the mass of dull and generic PC and console games. I would guess that in the coming years I could see myself going away from gaming completely, at least for a while if the industry doesn't change.
  16. The Witness by Jonathan Blow

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/09/07/the-witness-debuts-to-few-witnesses/ http://the-witness.net/news/?p=471 Jonathan Blow was also at PAX. Really clever of him to not announce anything before the show. Test for people to be surprised and find it without all the marketing hype.
  17. YES! Apparently it was Shaun Finney with the video camera?
  18. BioShock Infinite

He used to write gaming and technology column Game Over for CNN Money, and has been working on writing stuff since 1996. He has written to various other sites, to quote from Gamasutra article: Variety, Official Xbox Magazine, CNBC.com, Yahoo! Games and other sites. I found his Game Over column a long time ago through Shacknews, he has been a very active member there for a long time.
  19. Duke Nukem Forever Canned [and then not]

Duke has always been awesome with that. In Duke3D it was amazing to use all kinds of stuff and see them actually move an do something instead of just being static backdrops and items. Like the pool table in the first map and the payphones. Also pipe bombs were magnificiently done in Duke3D. The mirrors worked great in the bathrooms. All that small stuff made the game great and the maps were done in cool way. I'm hoping DNF will deliver lots of interactivity like that. When I hear stuff that you can use the whiteboard etc. then that is exactly what I'm hoping for. At some point I seem to remember GeorgeB bragging about the game having working microwaves that you can use, propably to kill miniature pig cops for example.
  20. BioShock Infinite

I have to add that Gamasutra made the best decision possible when they hired Chris "CNN" Morris to take Chris Remo's place as the editor-at-large in Gamasutra. Chris = Chris, as in they are both awesome writers and I couldn't agree more on the choice. I'm thrilled and happy that Remo got a chance to go in to actual development side at a respected company like Irrational Games. Also excellent to see Chris Morris get a big job at a respected site like Gamasutra, this means he will get even more people to see his writing. I wrote this first in the Duke Nukem thread, but I guess it's more appropriate here.
  21. Duke Nukem Forever Canned [and then not]

It is everything that 3DRealms & Triptych made since the latest startup of the project and Gearbox have been working on this since 2009 when 3DRealms closed shop and the court battle started with Take2 and 3DRealms. Reminder, Gearbox was mentioned in the court documents to have been working on few years on something called Duke Begins, lame name, but maybe that will be something for the future or included in the final DNF product. Gearbox has been reveiled to now own the rights to Duke Nukem. Yes, I remember also that in one of the leaked clips there was part of a battle in the remaked Duke Nukem 3D final battle at the American football field. In the PAX demo included that American football field fight and it was cleverly part of the demo as Duke playing a game of Duke Nukem. I hope that all is included in the game, as a part of the real game or as just an included demo release. Gamasutra interview with Randy Pitchford
  22. Obligatory comical YouTube thread

Really nice ones! I actually don't know if I've heard the earlier one ever before.
  23. Duke Nukem Forever Canned [and then not]

There are no games like Duke anymore, that's why Duke's return is very much welcomed. It's exactly like elmuerte put it. Duke is the Expendables of games industry. I've been hoping for it to come for ages. It would be super if they could include some kind of playable form of the 2001 version of Duke. The E3 trailer they made for that has always been one of my favourite game trailers. The only thing about DNF worrying me is that they seem to be aiming it at the consoles more than at PC. The talks of this two guns at a time in your inventory seems like a Halo choice rather than a PC FPS choice. If they implement it in a good way or at least give it a reasonable explanation then it could be ok. Why not make it so that PC can have the true game with no awkward design choices and the consoles can have their two guns at a time design. I call bullshit on George Broussard's comment that people play FPS games on PC with their gamepads also. That kind of people are crazy. Everything else about reading the multiple hands-on previews is getting me excited. This game will be so much more than the crap the industry puts out today. (For example Singularity, I'm talking to you.) This game is 3DRealms last game, Triptych games, the kicked out former 3DR developers worked on this game basically in their garages after the project was halted and people fired from 3DR. Gearbox is putting the finishing touches on the game, but of course if they've been working on this game for over a year, it will have a lot of influence from Gearbox as well, it's not purely 3DR anymore.
  24. Idle Thumbs PAX meetup '10

Not much news from the panel so far. I hope the recordings went well and we will see the last 'cast in the air soon. Were all the old thumbs there? Was UK represented by anyone? From what I gather at least Spaff was there, right? This truly would've been a great time to be in Seattle. Mindblowing weekend for sure. Shame that I live thousands of miles away from US...
