  1. Uncleared visitors can't take things out of chests.
  2. We can always invite more people to look around the world, and if they want to stay and build with us, they can ask...
  3. Yesterday I had an accident with a creeper and the back wall of the "free food" cabinet at the ground floor of the Stairway to Haven. Hence the cobblestone instead of the wood planks that were there initially and the blown up windows on the floor above, I didn't have any glass on me to mend those; I was rebuilding rather hastily there. Maybe for good measure we should build ditches around everything, or make ground-level walls thick enough to sustain accidental creeper asplosions.
  4. Because that stuff is lame.
  5. It sneaks up on you, it is really weird.
  6. I am generally for a pure (puritanical?) Minecraft experience, right out of the box, as The Good God intended it to be played, A lot of these mods do some arbitrary things with blocks that are not intuitive in the world (gold blocks accelerate carts that pass over them), and they break both the immersion and the joy of using the quirks of the game (booster loops) to engineer clever solutions to problems. It would be different if the booster was a general purpose motor block that the mod added. That would be great! As it is, no one seems to be using the motorized cart Notch put in the game. Maybe he should rethink that one as a block instead of a cart. At least while the game is still being developed stuff is relatively likely to break with every update—we already have to wait for hey0 to update every time Notch updates the server. We could have a lot of broken infrastructure to hike through every so often. [*]On the other hand, who gives a shit? 1a is entirely philosophical, 1b is an argument out of sheer laziness/impatience. I dunno. I am somewhat agnostic on this issue.
  7. (IGN.com)

For all private shit I do, I generally tend to write out small bits of content or use random news articles, but I got into trouble for that at work, since clients as a species are confused by everything and do not understand what temporary content is—or what content is in general. I still get asked why some sections of their site aren't in American, like good God intended them to be. Sometimes, if I am feeling particularly wily, I use google to translate actual things into latin and pepper real lorem ipsum nonsense with secret messages.

  9. I don't think we need the caves pseudogoog map layer. It is just confusing and possibly unsportsmanlike. It would also be cheaper processor-wise not to make it.
  10. See, I've been running this: tar -cvjf /opt/web/lighttpd/thumbsBak_`date +%Y%m%d%H%M`.tar.bz2 /opt/services/minecraft/thumbs Which is the same thing... but then it gives me this error after churning forever: /opt/services/minecraft/thumbs/14/v/ /opt/services/minecraft/thumbs/14/v/c.-o.2n.dat /opt/services/minecraft/thumbs/14/v/c.-o.-x.dat /opt/services/minecraft/thumbs/14/v/c.-o.v.dat /opt/services/minecraft/thumbs/14/v/c.14.v.dat /opt/services/minecraft/thumbs/14/v/c.14.-x.dat /opt/services/minecraft/thumbs/14/v/c.-2g.2n.dat /opt/services/minecraft/thumbs/14/14/ /opt/services/minecraft/thumbs/14/14/c.-o.-o.dat /opt/services/minecraft/thumbs/14/14/c.-2g.-o.dat /opt/services/minecraft/thumbs/14/14/c.-o.14.dat /opt/services/minecraft/thumbs/14/14/c.-2g.2w.dat /opt/services/minecraft/thumbs/14/14/c.14.14.dat /opt/services/minecraft/thumbs/14/14/c.14.-o.dat tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors It still makes tar.bz2 file...
  11. Also, we should look into hooking this one up: http://toolchain.eu/minecraft/c10t/ Seems to be a good tool... We can set up a cron job to crank them out so that we don't have to rely on deadbeat cartographers. They offer binaries, but I don't feel competent enough to try to install it.
  12. I think the sooner the better too. And backups will be made, just like with the other world.
  13. Man, some rad stuff on the server. I should go explore some more before we nuke it. It is really odd how now I cannot base jump off of mountains and live. Will take a little bit of getting used to. So! Do we want to schedule a time when more of us get together and try out a couple of servers? I am PROBABLY free all of this week, no work etc. Who else wants to be there as well, and when do we want to do it?
  14. Movie/TV recommendations

I have to geek out here and point out that C. S. Lewis and Tolkien were actually friends and that the latter never really appreciated how artlessly the former had razed his as of yet unpublished manuscripts (which he was nonetheless privy to for all the decades that it took Tolkien to write the books) to churn out a book after book of relatively ham-fisted Catholic propaganda for children.
  15. Life

It is weird to be reading things with partial attention; for example, after the first attempt at reading this post, I thought you were talking about a bicycle. My mind had substituted "Shimano" for "Toshiba" and I was startled to realize how far off the mark I was, at the second pass, when I attempted to parse the acronyms. :wtf: :wtf:
  16. I started a new single player game and then gave myself a ton of iron through one of those dat editors. The final simple design works damn well! You don't even need the little flat bits at the very top of the ramps; you can totally butt the rampy bit against the curvy thinger. The two simple boosters, pushing about five or six blocks propelled the cart about 700 meters which is not shabby at all.
  17. DeathSpank

Ack, wtf, I just killed the nun yesterday and today I am trying to run the game, and I can start it up and change around menus, but whenever I hit "continue" the game starts loading, changes the music to regular walking around music and then crashes on me. Time to see if Hothead has any solutions to my woes. EDIT: This helped.
  18. Ok, ahaha... I lied! There is more! I dunno if I have burned out yet on this. These hypothetical solution studies are surprisingly fun to execute. And they give themselves so easily to procedural evolution. You should all try it! K, so this is a yet simpler version of the previous design—this one in the "correct" configuration, with the through-roads above the launching pad (above the vertical mob-maginot-line of three blocks). If the track pieces choose to behave, and if they are laid down in a particular order, there is no reason why this more compact layout wouldn't work the same as the previous one. There is a small chance, though, that two fully accelerated carts going in opposite directions, may meet in the little sideways dips and slow each other down—whereupon, both parties can use the launch pad right there to re-launch each-other in their respective destinations. And actually, I see a really cute way to fix that from happening, I may append it to the diagram tomorrow... Aaaaand, also, even if the pattern is too tight, it can be elongated by a few track pieces here and there and gain enough room to function smoothly, with no unexpected track polarity going on.

Getting high for christ. On his birthday. Good idea? Hummh…
  20. Ok, ok, I think I am done with this for good! This one is the most graceful way of doing it, methinks. A & B are taken for granted, C is the switch. Also, I guess, if we do the raised rails through the countryside (to avoid the mobs and such), the onramps can be below rather than above the tracks; the same essential layout should still apply. I would test it myself, but I don't have any single player worlds where I have enough iron, and the server is still stupid. And yes, I do web design for a living. I'm flattered my diagrams with their ad hoc perspective are a hit.
  21. OK! So how about this one Jennoa? The dug out bit drops two blocks, so there is enough room for through traffic to pass under the raised bit of bridge. The darker green areas are booster and reserved for second booster respectively. The crosshatched yellow bits are slices that may be removable (and would save you six track pieces) if the game allows a ramp to butt against a bendy bit and let it work without issues. This design ought to be compass-agnostic, so it can be built against tracks pointing in any way. Theoretically.
  22. Christmas Cards

I got my card just now too, woo! I'll have to make room on my altar for it! I'm curious, tho, why Robocop?
  23. Ah, damn... I guess I will have to rethink this some. When you butt an end of a track against an existing corner, the cart will continue straight, right? And if you butt it against a straight bit of track it will go either west or south, correct? If an infinitely boosted cart runs into a booster, will it slow down or will it not care? I suspect tomorrow will be another slow day at work so I will foolproof some of this infrastructure for our future server rebootery. I suspect this will require some tweaking of the through-tracks after all. I had hoped this would not be the case. At least I suspect you will not have to do anything if you're merely passing through.
  24. I simplified the design; this way it's cheaper to make. There is no need for the Ω which was my conceptual starting point. One could also install a second booster in the light orange area, but then the stairs would need to be moved… Slow day at work today… ¬¬
  25. Jennoa had built a roller coaster on the current map that did something similar and it actually conserved momentum in the air. That is why I think this may work as advertised.
